“Fuji” by Lyell Castonguay

24″ x 36″ woodcut on bright white Stonehenge paper hand printed in a limited edition of 20 impressions.

This piece takes its inspiration from the Scaled Quail.  Found in arid regions of the Southwest United States, the Scaled Quail has a distinct crest on the top of its head that looks like a high-top hairdo.  I wanted to juxtapose the little quail with a vast and awe-inspiring natural element.  The pointed head reminded me of the tallest mountain in Japan, Mt. Fuji.  Borrowing elements familiar in ukiyo-e images, I attempted to make the quail appear regal and intimidating. Three separate woodblocks were used to print “Fuji,” resulting in a seven color combination.
