hmm yeah its annoying when leftists do this or that. but its more annoying when the unceasing gears of capital grind billions of human lives into paste for centuries and centuries. so.
perpetually annoyed by character criticism that is just “is this character sympathetic? is this character relatable? does this character get an ending they ‘deserve’ (as it correlates with their own moral goodness)?” so what if they’re unsympathetic. so what if they’re unrelatable. so what if they are made suffer. so what if they’re a symbol. they’re not real! fictional characters are tools in a story, like setting, or tropes, or tone, or style, or pacing, or medium. they are a figment, a fragment. they are not human beings, and they do not exist in a real life moral framework. this is not good analysis. ask better questions.

wow, what a year! 2021 was a very hectic and intense year for me with starting in person classes at my new college and working again. throughout it all tumblr has been truthfully a highlight for me and my blog has become my comfort space when life this year got to be too much. so, I wanted to do my first follow forever! my mutuals are a big reason why I keep on making content and y’all inspire me so much it’s unreal. I hope all my mutuals have a much better year in 2022 because I know most of us definitely went through it in 2021. a very special note to my friends I have made through Tumblr in the past year - @w1segirl @ghostyjosty @rcwena, your friendship means so much to me!!!! For a long time, I couldn’t find the ending. And then, we did a take where we gave Sarah’s character time to process that moment. And when Tom walked over and said, “You okay?” Despite that absolutely extraordinary betrayal, she put a game face on and said, “Yep.” And because it was such a perfect kind of Succession moment, that she would still somehow find the strength to put that Teflon coat on and be in denial of that pain was so powerful to me that I knew we had the end of the season.

Comic Peni vs Movie Peni
I’ve been seeing a few people say that movie Peni Parker is “racist” and “doing Peni wrong” when it comes to her placement and role in ITSV.
First of all: Peni from the comics was pretty much Evangelion with a coat of Spiderman paint. A series that, while well known, has lost mainstream attention and relevancy.
Second off: Everything that would make up Comic Peni was already taken by Miles, Gwen, and Noir.
Legacy character taking up the mantle of someone who previously held the position? That’s Miles.
Edgy teen who isolates themselves to protect either themselves or others due to their profession? That’s Gwen.
Overly serious battle hardened hero who life won’t stop kicking? That’s Noir.
See what I mean? The only real differences between Comic Peni and these three are the fact that she’s powerless, using a giant robot, and anime.
Now what about Movie Peni?
Is she a legacy character like Miles? Yes, and like Comic Peni, unlike him she had no choice. Unlike Comic Peni however, she clearly loves doing what she’s doing and is more than “angsty teen #8675309”. She’s kind, she’s energetic, and she’s polite and willing to work and bond with others. But she’s also vain and a bit prideful.
Is she an isolated teen like Gwen who doesn’t get too close to others? No, she clearly gets along great with the other spiders, has a BFF relationship with a robot and the spider that bit her, and is the one who expresses the joy and hope of not being the only spider person to exist. She’s pretty much Gwen’s polar opposite.
Is she overly serious like Noir? No. She’s energetic, optimistic, and clearly joyful about everything she does. She’s pretty much Noir’s polar opposite.
See what I mean?
No matter what way you look at it, Comic Peni isn’t much of her own character outside her base concept, and upon actually comparing her to most of the other spiders. Upon which she could literally just be called “Gwen, Miles, and Noir as one character.” And if a character ends up like that in a movie about DIFFERENT spider people, with her only difference being her animation style and basic character, then a new version is very necessary.
Movie Peni at least has a character that stands out among the other spiders, like how it’s supposed to be, and clearly has differences that make her her own character and not just “Anime-homage the Character”. Her style is meant to help show how different she is compared to the rest, like how Noir is black and white, or Ham is done in a Looney Toons style.
Comic Peni would just be redundant in ITSV. She’s too similar to three of the five spider people, her differences don’t even barely justify her need to be in the film, and her inclusion would just be a case of “Get rid of Miles, Gwen, and Noir, or make a new Peni.”
If your argument is basically “I’m mad that the version of the character I like isn’t in this movie, think of how cool it would be if X were here instead of Y” then you have the right to not like the fact that they didn’t get in.
But if you just say “X is racist because I say so and don’t explain” while IGNORING how much JAPAN loves Peni despite this “racism”, then you have no argument. You’re mad about something you like not getting the cut, because they didn’t make the cut. Not because of some superficial “racism” that doesn’t even exist.
Why? Because anime is not only one of the most popular forms of media in the world, but it’s so one of the most recognizable and known, with MANY tropes associated with it. With the “cute” tropes being among the most popular. Of course they’re going to go with the most recognizable style of anime, because that’s what people know!
It’s not a matter of race, it’s a matter of which would work better in the story and world that the movie has? The edgy, over serious, legacy character that overlaps with three other characters? Or the peppy, energetic, smart aleck, smart mouth, and smart one that actually stands out on her own?
Also: Racism - The irrational hatred or fear of another race.
Would it have been cool if Comic Peni were in the movie? Maybe.
But if your only reason is “because it’s cool”, without actually taking into account HOW the character would work and affect the world of the movie, and nonexistent “racism”. Then you need to go outside.
