Please let my 22 year old computer scientist self explain to you some reasons I love rescue bots
K so not comp sci BUT the storyboarders on this show have a ridiculous level of skill, which makes the show’s simple style shine with dynamic shots. The scenes logically flow into one another which not only make it easier for children to follow the action, but for adults to remain interested. Just wanted to put that out there. (see Donna W.Y. Long’s examples, srsly)
so first of all griffin rock is a spectacular concept for testing technology. It’s an island so any rogue experiments can be contained but also have enough room for some fun. It emphasizes that science can be messy, but also cool. It’s awesome to see all his tech being treated as normal. That’s a good way to fight technophobia in young children, which makes my job easier in the long run.
ALSO the script treats emergency situations seriously, even though it’s kind of an actiony show. The rescue team always handle situations to the best of their ability in a relatively calm manner. I personally think that’s a great teaching tool for parents to use. “Hey remember when x character did a thing during this situation? That’s something you should/shouldn’t do, what are some better things we can brainstorm together about this problem?”.
THINGS GO WRONG ALL THE TIME. Projects fail. Code goes haywire. something breaks. Someone’s feelings get hurt. I love that this show demonstrates that even if things go real bad real fast, you can work through it. Nothing and no one is perfect, and it’s important to own up to your mistakes and practice good communication so your relationships and projects can progress. Normalizing failure as something that’s not a big deal creates wonderfully persistent scientific minds.
The language in general is very clear. There’s no “ok now in english please” when scientific topics are discussed. Kids are smart proto-humans and will pick up on how to explain difficult subjects in a clearer manner. The show doesn’t talk down to the viewer. It’s really nice to me in that it makes scientific subjects seem less intimidating. I don’t like when media makes science out to be gobbledygook to the average person, when anyone can understand it if it’s explained properly. My fav professor rn says that If you cannot summarize a topic in a few simple sentences, you don’t actually understand the subject. Rescue bots does this super duper well.
And lastly, it makes learning and asking questions a fun and natural thing to do. That if someone doesn’t know something, they certainly can find out! That makes me very happy. Being able to fail and grow and discover is what science is all about!! I hope this show inspires the next generation of engineers and scientists as much as it inspires me.
