@irritatedlifeguard I agree with your tags.

the best part about following a smorgasbord of leftists across various ideologies is that if i see a post on my dash getting passed around with some commentary that i personally disagree with, instead of reblogging and correcting it, i can simply wait until one of my mutuals does an effortpost about it or starts an entire argument chain on the post itself. the worst part is that this also happens with posts i already agree with

am I finally free

YEAHHHHH ok. I need to post about this but uh. Tumblr has a very fun glitch! If you press R ONCE on the desktop ver of the site, it will reblog the focused post instantly, no tag editing or blog selection. it may accidentally post it a couple more times , but that's it.

however. if you fucking hold R? it'll reblog the post instantly too, but MULTIPLE TIMES INSTANTLY. like I hit post limit bc I thought it wasn't actually reblogging the post. I only held the r button for a solit 10 seconds for it to reblog that post 200+ TIMES. my big ass mistake

either use or abuse it is up to you, but I reported it to Tumblr bc holy fuck dude. that's too much instant power

Tumblr Support just said this is a feature, not a glitch.

holy SHIT

i really really hate liberals who do volunteering for orgs that help the homeless and then write thinkpieces about how a lot of homeless people are very educated and hardworking and its not at all their fault that theyre unhoused like. even if ur hypothetical homeless person is addicted to every drug abused their whoever commited many crimes and their situation is every bit their fault. no one deserves to live on the street.

what walking/cycling around the city every night with a bike basket full of sandwiches accompanied only by another volunteer for almost a yeat has taught ME is that in the winter its really cold and after an hour we both wanted to go in anywhere warm, but every single business requires you to be a paying customer to sit inside, subway stations have staff that chase you away if youre sitting there long enough and even heating vents have spikes on them, and that in the summer its incredibly hot even at night and cops chase you away from fountains and the city is full of tourists and partying people that make it impossible to sleep on benches and that in the spring it rains and in the fall it also rains and that your only source of food is going to be a couple of teenagers and uni students volunteering in their spare time to make you a sandwich. and my conclusion from this, is what everyones conclusion should be. this is inhumane and no one deserves to live this way

occasional reminder that "oh no! [multinational company] is paying workers in [third world country] only [amount in USD] per hour!" headlines are probably meaningless to you, because you don't know the median wage and cost of living in the relevant third-world country.

This is true

At the same time, nothing I have read about the treatment of workers in third-world countries gives me the impression that most multinational companies (or their suppliers) care at all about those people's well-being or paying them a wage that will allow them a good quality of life. I think people should talk about that, but you're right that that specific type of headline doesn't seem to be the most meaningful way to do so

gender equity in sports is a weird topic, because, like… you can’t make people care about women’s sports. the thing that makes sport lucrative is that people care about it; and while the lack of interest in women’s sports may be due to gender discrimination, it’s downstream of cultural factors you can’t actually alter. decades of title ix has given the US, at least, a much more equitable landscape for collegiate athletics, but 1) collegiate athletics in the US is a cultural vortex of awfulness and should probably all be abolished, and 2) that doesn’t translate into equal prestige (or, more importantly, equal funding!) for professional women’s athletics.

This is one of those things where the gap between A: we should play sports because physical activity and the discipline of sports is healthy and we want to encourage that in girls, and B: we want societal prestige and fame to accrue equally to both men and women athletes, are very different goals but they use the same medium with no clear line between them (and a bunch of co-dependencies). Setting aside if either goal is even wise, just not on topic, subsidizing one does not at all imply subsidizing the latter, but we kindof essentially do both without clear direction or goal.

im sorry i just found out that all steel made post-ww2 has like subtly higher levels of radioactivity….. bc the nuclear bombs increased the background radiation in the air slightly all across the world and so atmospheric air used in the production of steel contaminates it….. and it’s completely negligible in everyday life and not at all dangerous (really, truly do not worry about it) but apparently it also means that whenever we need Special No Radiation Steel (like for scientific/medical equipment, ex. geiger counters or xray machines) we have to use scavenged steel made before ww2. and apparently shipwrecks are a great source of such steel. so a lot of such equipment is made from recycled shipwreck metal. what the fuck. what the fuck

Sourcing on this, which is fascinating (though mostly not needed now)

In those days, unmarked women were considered imperfect, undesirable. One of the most enduring ullalim, a form of epic poetry that is chanted by the village bard, is the story of the warrior hero Banna who falls in love with the beautiful Lagunnawa. In the pre-colonial tale, their tattooed bodies are celebrated as badges of honor, wealth, beauty, and bravery.  When the American Catholic missionaries came and built schools in Kalinga, village girls were made to cover their arms with long sleeves. Being tattooed became a point of shame when women ventured to the city, and eventually fewer girls from the succeeding generation continued the tradition as Western concepts of beauty and respectability began to permeate the culture.  from "Apo Whang-Od And The Indelible Marks Of Filipino Identity" VOGUE PHILIPPINES, April 2023 Cover Story

GUYS. GUYYYYYYYS. I don't know how many of you will be interested in this, but please allow me to share the latest Vogue PH issue. Because I am floored.

The woman on the cover is Apo Whang-Od, the oldest and, until just recently, the only remaining mambabatok (traditional Kalinga tattooist) in history. And now, at 106 years old, might also be the oldest person to be on the cover of Vogue.

Apo Whang-Od has, in the last decade, been heralded to national treasure status in the Philippines for keeping a significant part of her people's culture (the Butbut tribe of Buscalan, Kalinga) alive, even through years of Western colonization and modernization. Through her, an art form and custom that was on the verge of being lost to history has had a reemergence, and allowed a lot of Filipinos to rediscover and reconnect with our roots.

I am just so pleasantly surprised and impressed that a thousand-year local tradition was perfectly captured in the cover of a fashion magazine. The portrait itself (photographed by Artu Nepomoceno) is such a good one, too. Allowing Apo Whang-Od to be the symbol of strength and beauty—in ageing, in culture and in being Filipino. Three cheers for this profound moment in representation, Vogue PH! THIS IS HOW YOU SEEEEERVE!

Good thing: last weekend I got to see some old friends. One of them likes Legos, so I brought a couple small sets and we got to sit down and put them together.

It's delightful to see you posting again!

It's nice to be back!

I have had a difficult few years at work (fun fact, it's been rough to work in healthcare) and recently accepted a new job + planned a move. All of that has freed up a fairly large amount of brainspace!

Today and tomorrow I'm moving back in with my best friend! Also my relationship with my mom is better these days than previously. Hope you're well :^)

Congrats on all the improving social and living situations! ❤️

I had a great date with a new person last night. He's really cute and sweet, and we're wonderfully compatible, and I've been all fuzzy brained all day about it.

Awwwww, that's very very lovely

The master smirked. "All of those notes were from mutuals, correct?"

The apprentice nodded "yes".

He was immediately enlightened.
