By far the most anxiety inducing thing about neopets.com is how much artwork they paid people to make for years and years, I mean tens of thousands of drawings, that were uploaded at approximately three pixels across and at some point a staff member casually revealed that the company was never archiving the master files for most of that time
One time a user asked specifically if they were just going to make the petpets (like these) visible on the larger custom pet displays and the answer was “that would be a big project, we would have to have them all drawn over again!” like lol haha tee hee we had employees draw a million original drawings for us over many years that we saved exclusively as these microscopic gif images. I don’t care who you are or if you ever cared about neopets or even if you think all this art is ass ugly anyway, this fact has got to make you physically ill to some degree right, it’s just fucking nightmare demented right
