ok time to elaborate.

earlier today i was talking to someone and i mentioned one of my friends, and said 'yeah it was saying-' and before i could finish my sentence she interrupted me and went "it?" as if i'd misspoken. when i said "yeah, it said-" she looked at me as if i'd like insulted her or something and went "why are you calling your friends its? don't you mean they?"

i pretty much just went "nevermind" because that's not worth it (and no i'm not misgendering a friend for someone else's "comfort" like wtf) but the issue is

this. happens. every. time.

you tell someone else you use it/its? they look at you like you're fucking insane. 99% of the time they will refuse to use your pronouns because it's "offensive" to them (yknow what else is offensive? purposely misgendering me when i literally just told you my pronouns). when you talk about a friend who uses it/its pronouns, 99% of the time the other person will try to like. correct you or stop you even though they don't even know who you're talking about.

"well they/them is gender neutral too so just use th-" no. my pronouns are it/its. they/them is not it/its. they/them is misgendering.

"but it's gender neutra-" okay and? if dude said he uses he/him and you used they/them that's misgendering. why is it okay when it's it pronouns?

"but it's offensive to refer to people as-" bitch i am literally referring to myself as it/its. i am telling you directly in plain words that these are the pronouns that make me comfortable. i don't give a fuck what you think of them they are my pronouns

at this point i settle with they/them because i'm just done having people look at me like i said a slur when i tell them what pronouns i'm comfortable with.

Shout-out to my fellow weirdo makers out there that create thousands of parallel universes that their OCs simultaneously exist in, where they are, at their core, the same character, but each have subtle differences that make it difficult to fully express what is perfectly consistent across all of them.

In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.

It doesn’t matter what it’s for.

You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?

For college?

To put a downpayment on a house?

Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?

Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.

And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.

So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.

“What if I spend the money that day?”

Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.

And yes, this system literally kills people.

My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.

Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.

And here’s the funnest part of the story!

One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.

The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.

He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.

Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?

I still need to percolate my thoughts on this, but I feel like there's a major difference between good-naturedly making memes out of appreciation and an understanding of what you're memeing versus memefying everything in a shallow and cynical ironic~ way that comes off as mean-spirited bc rather than read the material sincerely, you're reading everything through the lens of shitpost memes and trying to go viral for being too cool for the source material and smarter than the characters, which leads to missing out on or outright dismissing crucial information if it doesn't fit your memefied framework, leading to bad faith readings that are at best frustrating and at worst cruel for what you're implying about real people in the same situation, anyway, yeah, this post is about Jonathan Harker tbh lol

I am begging this website to grow a sense of humor that goes beyond “pretend a character is stupid, then point and laugh at them for being stupid”

We're definitely coming up to a point in Dracula where I think first-time readers might benefit from a warning and returning readers a reminder that every single character in this book is going to say or do things that are very bigoted bc they are written by a very bigoted writer during the Victorian era, and there is a lot of nuance to this, but we need to be careful about balancing explanation versus justification regarding historical context bc while I do understand the shock and disappointment of your fave, say, deducing that a character must be evil bc he has a hooked nose (yes, this literally happens later in the book, and it's a smart and heroic character saying it, and we're supposed to read it as the character being perceptive and correct, rather than racist and antisemitic), there were times last year where some people got defensive in a way that downplayed or explained away the bigotry to twist the character into not being wrong or bigoted when it would be more useful to accept it for what it is and analyze how it reflects the biases of the era and author.

That, or some people understandably felt betrayed that their generally forward-thinking fave was not as progressive as they thought, so on that front, just be aware that it's going to happen bc of the nature of the book.

However, it's also important to remember that this is a wildly complicated book written by a wildly complicated author, so while there will be many times where the story's bigotry is unfortunately supported by Stoker and his own shitty beliefs, there are also times when the narrative surprisingly does not support the bigotry expressed by the characters, and you will usually be able to tell from the context and framing.
