what's so great about the mummy 1999?

it is the most wonderfully made, historically inaccurate, giddily fun, perfectly paced, goofy horror movie romance novel bullshit bonanza that has ever blessed the silver screen.

i mean it is just so beautifully full of every genre without being overwhelming.we’ve got: comedy, action, suspense, horror, romance, adventure, ancient aesthetics, and it’s a period piece. all perfectly balanced and blended into one movie.

and the characters are so LIT

we got our main babe, evelyn “motherfucking” carnahan, a super-klutz librarian, total history nerd, and certified badass/damsel in distress. she raises the dead on accident, because she cannot resist books, and has the guts to put that motherfucker back where he came from and literally saves the world.evie’s greatest hits: 

then we’ve got rick “brendan fraser” o’connell, your not-so-typical battle hardened gun slinger with a heart of gold. he seems filthy, rude, and a complete scoundrel at first, but then he turns into a literal puppy, with massive heart eyes, that worships the ground evie walks on.rick’s greatest hits:

next is our Comedic Relief Character™, jonathan carnahan, who also rises above his trope. he’s there for the laugh sure, but is never useless. he actively helps to move the plot along and isn’t just there. he also is the farthest thing from brainless and annoying.jonathan’s greatest hits:

then there is ardeth BAE. he is the audience rolling his eyes because *sighs* white people. he’s tired of these motherfucking mummies in this motherfucking desert. literally prettier than everyone.(he has a much bigger role in the mummy returns, but is still so fab here)

and of course THE MUMMY. imhotep. actual emo. literally carved some poetry into the back of his sarcophagus when he was buried alive with flesh eating bugs, because he is that Extra™. just wants to bring his girlfriend back to life so he can make out with her without it being treason. 

and all the side characters are also gr8.

now i wanna take a moment to talk about the romance. because it is so BEAUTIFUL. like usually in action movies it’s macho man undermines girl and they bone. not here. no time for that shit. 

rick and evie have such a great relationship based on mutual respect and affection. they both cater to each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses. they are the literally definition of: “those two. in a fight, they’re lethal. around each other, they melt”

what else, i could literally talk about this movie all day.

the special effects have held up pretty well.the music score is GORGEOUS.the costumes are amazing.the makeup, especially for anck su namun, OH WOW.the george of the jungle era brendan fraser sign me the fuck up.rachel weisz.

so many good things.

it’s a beautiful mess of a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and transcends time and posterity as the alpha mummy movie, and to those who disagree i beseech you:

Mimi, I don’t know if you receive the asks, but can I ask you as anew army to help me? I tried to understand how the members are: their personalities and what the others think about the members - but something in detailed not just the usual few words like, “he is good at everything”, “he can dance”, “he was like that or like this”. I tried but no matter how much content I see old or new I still don’t understand Jungkook... I just don’t get how he is like beyond a simple list of character traits.

THE REAL JEON JUNGKOOK. BETWEEN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. WHO IS HE?

Jungkook changed the most since his debut. He had the most apparent character development in the group.

Let’s start from even before he joined BigHit. He auditioned and was so shy you could barely hear him. He obviously failed. He didn’t have the confidence of an entertainer but his voice and looks made many agencies approach him. They saw potential in him. But no one at that time knew that this boy would have enough potential to shake millions of hearts. No one knew…not even him. So he was extremely shy. 

Even after debuting. His shyness didn’t fade quickly. The Jungkook that now is followed by cameras all day and everywhere. Who goes on live streams for the fans alone and even fell in love with videography so much he started shooting his own videos. Yes I am talking about the guy who is not ashamed of showing his body, the guy who acts silly and throws jokes not caring if they are funny or lame. Just some years ago, he will run away from his own stuff’s camera. He will hide all the time. His shyness was so extreme, he will only be able to shower after making sure all the BTS member went to sleep. It took time for this lil one to grow. But keep in mind he was so timid yet his job from a young age asked him to not be. He was meant to change yet can you imagine the weight and anxiety this can bring? 

Jungkook said once that pride is worthless but why would he say that? It’s because he had to let it be stepped on so many times to make it. Coming from a small company and starting in a competitive place, he had to work more than an average idol. He also had a lot of weight put on him when he barely could handle any kind of attention. He had to be the center of most formations. Be in the center during a chorus and the highlight of a dance break but also rap. This has gotten him a lot of hate. He has just done what the BTS members and his agency told him to do. He was the youngest, he couldn’t even talk back, but he got detested for working harder than anyone? Imagine being in his shoes. 

People think at first glance that Jungkook being so popular is just a blessing. But he was affected from pure hate to the point he almost quit social media. Jungkook also had dark hair for so long because “fans” called him ugly when he had red hair in the early years. But the little boy grew into a man confident enough to have his hair the color he wants, get tattoos and have long hair.

Jungkook was always the type who do not say when he is hurt or having it hard. The members tried their best to make him express himself but it’s still not easy. It was because he saw the members suffer a lot in front of his eyes. We don’t see it but each one of them feel depressed, lonely and anxious. They talk about it with each other and witness it heavily but once the cameras roll, they smile and put on personas sometimes to not make others worry. Jungkook cries though under two situations, when he sees his brothers from BTS swimming in pain and worry or when it comes to ARMYs. He even made a song called “Begin” just for BTS and have ARMY tattooed on his hand. His in ears also have the BTS and ARMY logos. He is a boy who look strong and is strong, but he has the softest heart. 

Jungkook said that the members raised him. He started smiling more with time. He gained confidence and even if many tried to put him down. His loved ones complimented him. And he became who he is today. Jungkook is still young and is always trying to learn. He works so hard in whatever he starts. He started shooting and editing video. He comes online to play and talk with fans. And even though he lost a lot choosing this path, he gained many great things and that’s why he is always grateful. He is so humble too. If someone was as successful and popular as him, do you think he will be modest enough to say each time “I will work hard.” When you look closely at it, Jungkook always asked for one thing and it’s to be loved and accepted. He has a tattoo saying “Please love me”. So,  please, continue to look at Jungkook and the rest of the BTS members kindly.
