Er'ybody wants to be a cat.
A cat’s the only cat who knows where it’s at.
Remember how it was really great that Fury Road didn’t feel the need to show you the wives being sexually assaulted and abused? That you trusted their experiences without having to wallow in scenes graphically showing you what happened?
Yeah, the Furiosa comic book didn’t go that direction.
Sigh.
Oh man. Things of note for people who get triggered. ^^^
This. In a nutshell.
I feel like the entire spirit and intent of the movie got…lost here. More like deliberately discarded for dude fantasy. There were a few interesting bits (Dag, I fucking love you.), but on the whole it felt…cheap and exploitative. Like, not even in the same universe as Fury Road.
And none of all that bullshit even really told us anything. (Can it ever?) The wives felt interchangeable and flat. So did Joe and his crew. It was vulgar for the sake of being vulgar.
This is very true. Not only was it vulgar just for shock (with the narrative frame of being a legend passed down to children???) it didn’t tell us anything that we hadn’t figured out from the movie.
Furiosa #1 was like peering into an alternate universe, where Fury Road was made to appeal to dudebro fantasies and milk the box office instead of telling a compelling story.
Fuck. Is this the same comic that was supposed to have the Nux origin story? I wanted to get that but now I”m pissed.
This was the second issue, Furiosa #1. What you’re looking for is Immortan Joe and Nux #1. Much much better than..whatever this was supposed to be.
Also, let’s not forget the biphobia (or is it homophobia?) and ableism! The History Man subtly suggests that Joe may have painted his brides up to look like his precious War Boys, and Dag later mocks him by suggesting that he’d like to fuck them, much to everyone’s amusement. Given that the HIstory Man is telling the kids (!!!!!!!) a lesson about a Very Bad Man, the fact he suggests that he feels the need to throw in “oh by the way he probably liked the menz!” is…irrelevant. And kind of makes the possibility of him being bisexual or gay sound like just one more perverted, awful thing about him. Kind of like how Roman historians cataloged Tiberius and Caligula’s perversions to show what awful rulers they were.
And then we’ve got Rictus being an oversexed, violent man-child leering at Cheedo and babbling about how he wants to touch her. Because, you know, portraying developmentally disabled people as violent, hypersexual, and dangerous has never tied into the high rates of abuse, rape, and mistreatment they face–oh wait. Hell, the whole situation is put into motion because, basically, a disabled person threatens Joe’s wives. And that’s fucking disgusting to me.
I usually can understand why problematic media gets things wrong and I don’t generally call it out harshly, but I seriously felt like shit after reading this. As someone who is bi, I’ve actually rarely been quite as insulted by biphobia like that before. I think this stings more than it would, though, because the film was so excellent about so many issues. *sigh*
As a bisexual, I wouldn’t really call this comic biphobic. Biphobia is a type of queerphobia that targets bisexuals specifically. This comic attacks any character trait that falls outside of the straight cis able bodied hypermasculine ideal. What we’re seeing here is generalized queerphobia, and generalized misogyny.
The comic’s primary narrative purpose seems to be to reinforce and perpetuate toxic masculinity.
A “real man” is attracted to women, therefore Joe is attracted to boys, and disguises women as boys to sexualize them. A “real man” is hyper-sexual, therefore Joe is impotent, and requires chemical assistance to achieve an erection.
“Real men” are heroes. Joe is a villain, therefore he must not be a “real man.” He must be some kind of boy loving pervert eunuch.
This is the complete opposite of the movie’s message.
In the movie, women are heroes.
Not just some narrow conception of “real women” either. Infertile women are heroes. Victimized women are heroes. Disabled women are heroes. Fat women are heroes. Old women are heroes. Women of different races. Women with different skills.
Men can be heroes too, but only after they reject hyper-masculinity, and prove themselves reliable allies to women.
You’re completely correct here! Thank you for that analysis. I knew I was missing part of the picture in mine. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of the “depraved bisexual” trope than generallized queerphobia, but you’re absolutely right.

Here is the secret to fandom:
Give zero fucks about what anyone else is doing.
Seriously. I mean it. Because inevitably you will love something that no one else loves. Or you will love something that everyone loves and people will shit all over it because it’s “so trite and unimaginative and done.” Or you will love something that no one else has ever heard of. Or you will love something dark and edgy and or obscure and people will roll their eyes and say, “What, do you want people to think you’re dark and edgy and obscure?”
Alternatively, you will not love the thing that everyone else loves, and you will wonder what precisely is wrong with you that the sight of that thing is aggravating the shit out of you now when the whole world sings its praises as one.
People will irritate you. They’ll irritate you with headcanons that make no sense and misinterpretations of canon. They will make the same jokes 500 times. They will overwhelm your corner of fandom with something you either are tired of hearing about or don’t care about. They will post art that isn’t theirs. You will meet people who think you are the greatest person ever and bombard you with messages only to wander off when they find someone new or shinier; you will meet people whom you admire and who do not really seem to notice you exist.
So give zero fucks about it. Seriously. Like what you like, blacklist what you need to blacklist, and ignore everything else. Be friends, play nice, enjoy it. And in the meantime, just do you. Like what you like, love what you love, and to hell with all the rest of it.
I want to give you the entire internet for this post. Brilliantly said <3
[shown above] Ruhal Ahmed, a former Guantanamo Bay detainee, in an interview in which he discusses Omar Khadr. Ahmed stammers,
“I think he was a strong kid.
I think, you know, being much older, much older than him, I did feel that, sometimes, I needed to look out for him and I think so did the other prisoners around him feel the same. But obviously, being in Guantanamo, you can’t really look out for one another.
Uh, it’s, it’s, it’s difficult you know, today I’m here, and I’m, I’m thinking of, thinking of him and he’s still in prison and he’s still, still a kid. I don’t know really what I would say to him. It doesn’t seem, it doesn’t seem fair that he’s still there and, and I’m here.”
Khadr, a Canadian, was taken into US custody at the age of fifteen, tortured and refused medical attention because he wouldn’t attest to being a member of Al Qaeda, even though he was shot three times in the chest and had shrapnel embedded in his eyes and right shoulder. As a result, Khadr’s left eye is now permanently blind, the vision in his right eye is deteriorating, he develops severe pain in his right shoulder when the temperature drops, and he suffers from extreme nightmares.
Ahmed, who was imprisoned in the cell next to him for some time, reported that Khadr would return from interrogations (where he would be tortured) crying and would huddle in a corner of his cell with his blanket over his head.
Shafiq Rasul, another former Guantanamo Bay detainee, stated that although Khadr was forced to mature due to his harsh treatment and torture, he still had the mentality of a child. Guantanamo Bay’s Muslim chaplain James Yee confirmed this by reporting that Khadr had been given a Mickey Mouse book in a surprising act of kindness by one of his interrogators, and that he slept with it clutched to his (injured) chest. Muneer Ahmad, one of Khadr’s first attorneys, reported that at their first meeting at Guantanamo, Khadr asked for nothing other than colouring books, car magazines and pictures of big animals and played with the attorney’s ink pens and digital watch.
Khadr has been incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay since 2002, and is now 27 years old.
More heartbreaking news: While Khadr is now out of Guantanamo and in a Canadian maximum security prison (which is not much better), he is currently being sued by a US soldier and the wife of a US soldier who was killed while arresting/torturing Khadr. These people are suing him for fifty million dollars because, while carrying out an attack against Khadr as child, they were injured.
Please keep Khadr and all of the other victims of this torture in your hearts
we can see you when you don’t reblog this, white people, and we all know why.
poor fucking kid
It feels like now is the right time to reblog this ancient post, now that John Oliver’s come up with a report on US torture:

Also, Furiosa’s comic is just...hugely disappointing, and not only because it’s whole point seems to be “rape is bad and Immortan Joe is a bad ugly man and his son is a violent, oversexed r______ .” (god I wish I was kidding with the slur I’ve elided; Rictus is like one of the worst stereotypes of DD people I’ve ever seen in this comic.) It’s just ugly to look at. Every single color is a shade of vomit and some panels are so dark you can barely tell what’s going on. I mean, I get it. This is an ugly world. But Immortan Joe’s comic had colors! And lines that didn’t look like they’d been done with an etch-a-sketch. And it still managed to be bleak and ugly. I just felt nauseous looking at the colors alone here. :/
I’ve not been this disappointed in something in years.
Hey all? Spoiler free note to let you all know that Furiosa’s comic that just came out today features some pretty graphic scenes of sexual assault, rape, and some ableism. Given that the sexual violence was mainly implied in the film, I was honestly shocked to see how, well, intense this got.
Since Fury Road is kind of centered around rape and the escaping from it, I suspect people are already approaching other canon material with caution and awareness that it could be potentially triggering. But I wanted to put this out there because I think it’s better to over-warn than to just assume and not warn at all.

MTV: So wait, the whole thing actually worked?
Colin Gibson (Production Designer): You bet your sweet… George — unfortunately — doesn’t like things that don’t work. I have in the past built him props that I thought were just supposed to be props, and then he goes, “Okay, plug it in now.”
The first version of the guitar which — I think I put too much into the flame thrower, not enough into the reverb. And yes, the flame throwing guitar did have to operate, did have to play, the PA system did have to work and the drummers… Unfortunately, I did get practice in all positions and I’ve got to tell you, the drumming was very uncomfortable at 70 [kilometers] an hour, eating sand.
[…] George actually had the guitarist come over, fairly early on in pre-production in Africa. And so he had a month or six weeks of getting used to it, of actually being able to play at full speed, while bungee jumping and blind.
I THINK I PUT TOO MUCH INTO THE FLAME THROWER AND NOT ENOUGH INTO THE REVERB
