“After the 1948 war, masses of Palestinians were turned into refugees in the Arab states, in the territories, and around the world. For Palestinian women, the ensuing years not only froze their activism, but also destroyed their material bases, and all social and political institutions nearly ceased to exist. Palestinian women in refugee camps had to devote their efforts to survival. Samiha Khalil (1924–99), one of the most prominent Palestinian figures, recalls her experience as a refugee searching for a way to struggle against the new reality: “I came to the conclusion that no one gives another freedom on silver platter.… We needed a strong Palestinian leader … but no one appeared. I thought: Why wait for others? I am Palestinian too. I am not helpless and I can make a difference” (Najjar with Warnock 1992: 41). Khalil established the first association in the refugee camp, the Arab Women’s Union, in 1952. The association gave women the opportunity to do embroidery in their homes, providing the needed materials and then selling their products for them. Some people laughed at Khalil, saying, “Who does she think she is?” (ibid.: 41). But Khalil continued. In her garage in 1965, she established one of Palestine’s most respected welfare associations, Inaash al-Usra. Her social contributions included kindergartens, a nursery, an orphanage, and a sewing factory. In addition to her activism in the Palestinian civil society, she became a member of the Palestinian National Council, running for the Palestinian presidency in 1996 against the historical leader Arafat, which gave her and her struggle both in women’s and political issues further focus (Kerrie 1996).“”
