She is often cited as the first female candidate for President of the United States, nominated by the Equal Rights Party in 1872. She was a leader of the woman's suffrage movement was also an advocate of free love; an activist for labor reforms; and, with her sister, the first woman to operate a Wall Street brokerage and the first woman to publish a weekly newspaper. This paper, Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly, had the distinction of printing the first English language version of Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto, as well as controversial opinions on sex education, short skirts, licensed prostitution, and vegetarianism. At 14, Woodhull and her sister were marketed by their father as mediums who could heal people and communicate with the dead. They became the family's primary breadwinners.
