hi! ok so i'm going to talk about one of my top-five favourite things, which is: dyeing stuff! this is going to be specifically about dyeing protein fibres (animal fibres—wool, alpaca, silk, etc) in a pretty low-key way in your kitchen.

to be clear up front: this is not the most scientific, most perfectly reproducible, or most Objectively Correct way to dye things. i get a lot of fibre that i like this way, though, and i think that other people can, too.

fibre i've dyed that i think is neat:

you can also dye yarn like this:

yes, i like blue a lot. i also really like variegation and heathering, which is why most of the fibre here has patches of white—it's an intentional choice that i've made. you can make different choices.

here is what you need to dye things:

fibre, vinegar, dye, a pot, heat, and some water.

and this is the perfect example of when you know what the punchline will be from the very beginning and are still absolutely shocked at what you see

hometowns have a thousand little ghosts pushing through the pavement that trip you up wherever you go how are we meant to live like that

on my way out of my hometown i’m torn between: “i have too many ghosts here” and “i don’t have enough ghosts anywhere else”.. a haunting doesn’t always have to be bad. it can be a light in my childhood best friend’s window after she moved away seven years ago.. it can be the smell of lilacs in spring that just don’t smell the same in another state.. it can be seeing an old classmate’s parent in line at the grocery store and being given a hug. there are small joys in tripping over my ghosts. sometimes the ghosts love me as much as they hate me.. but either way they’re proof i’ve lived. i managed to leave a fingerprint on the world here. small as it might be..

this reminds of the golden record on the voyager 1 which consists of 115 analog-encoded photographs, greetings in 55 languages, a 12-minute montage of sounds on earth and 90 minutes of music, so that if any other civilization gets it hands on the cold & lonely spacecraft they will be aware of the existence of humanity and find a way to us somehow…and if the voyagers aren’t wiped out till the end of the universe, they will be the last speck of the proof that humanity existed after we’re long gone & bear a final message to the universe that “we were here”. the pale blue dot as being captured by the voyager 1 before it descended into the depths of the interstellar space is the only testament to the universe out there, that “in thousands of agonies – we exist!”
