Aknosom chicks develop their flame sacs relatively quickly compared to other monster species. Because of this, nesting aknosom will engage in a practice known as "air raking" using their powerful wings to clear flammable detritus away from the nest.

Hatchlings have a voracious appetite for dense roots and chips of wood. This diet, combined with peptides in their parents saliva, will kick-start the process of fermenting the complex hydrocarbons needed for their fire breath.

Historically, hatchling aknosom down was used as an insulator for its fire retardant properties. This has fallen out of practice, as it also causes lung cancer in humans.

Their fire breath is not actually "true fire breath." Where other creatures project a pressurized stream or cloud of a flammable liquid, aknosom use their powerful sinus muscles to spit wads of highly flammable mucus and digested material. These flammable owl pellet structures can be extremely sticky, or rubbery and bouncy, depending on the creatures diet.
