Jewish people have various languages entirely to ourselves (Ladino, Yiddish, Ge'ez, Judeo-Yemeni, etc.), have our own naming practices, different traditions for birth, marriage and death, and have customs that are not religious in origin. Additionally, someone can be religiously observant in Judaism and an atheist, because our understanding of our faith isn't "religious or nonreligious" it's "observant or nonobservant". You can tell Lily doesn't understand that given she had people stop being religious when her OC killed their deity, which is the kind of thing that displays a lack of research prior to her writing that just baffles me. (We have a centuries old traditional Jewish joke where a Jewish man decides the supernatural isn't real, shows up for Torah study the next day, and when his friend says, "What about what you decided yesterday?", his friend goes, "I don't see what that has to do with anything.")

While Jewish people are a culture and an ethnicity, and we don't benefit from white privilege in the eyes of most bigots even when we're white, I do want to note that Jewish people don't all look one way. Some of us are white passing. Some of us are Middle Eastern and North African. Some of us are from India. Some Jewish people are from Ethiopia and face anti-blackness on top of antisemitism as a result. The third largest Jewish community in the United States are Latine Jewish people in Florida. Converts are also considered ethnically Jewish, regardless of race. My rabbi's wife is Native (Oglaga Dakota) and a convert and is, by the standards of Judaism, ethnically Jewish, as she is now part of the community and subject to the same discrimination as other Jewish people are. Lily always refers to us as white, so I'm gathering your parents were uneducated on matters regarding Judaism. It's unfortunate, because in my mind parents have a duty to educate their children, but your parents... honestly your parents sound awful and it's really incredible to me that you're so well-adjusted, accepting and kind despite them.

Since you're infinitely more open-minded than your family, though, I thought I would tell you some facts and clarify a few things. You're open to learning and that's such a positive thing. I've met people with far better parents who get extremely angry when told Judaism isn't about religion. It's wonderful to me that you're not like that. Lily's anger is deeply saddening the more you post; seeing how you've moved on, processed your trauma and found some peace makes me wish there was a way to intervene and help Lily do the same.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure there's anything that can be done about that. But in Judaism, the purpose of life is to repair the world - to try to fix things and set them right wherever you can, however you can. And for what it's worth, I think your efforts to try to keep Lily away from children by warning people about her count as that. You are trying to protect others even though, horrifically, no one was there to protect you. That is a beautiful and holy thing and I know the words of some internet rando don't mean much, but in addition to giving a pinch of info about Judaism I also just wanted to tell you that you're doing great. You've come a long way and continued to do the right thing even when it's never been easy. That is incredibly admirable. I hope you know that anything any of us think about your sister and her actions do not reflect on you. You're a good person.

Oh common you're making me cry now.

No seriously this is the sweetest thing someone on the net has probably ever said to me. Thank you.

Also thank you for the info on Judaism! I fucking love learning, I learn so much here.

Hopefully this should help with anyone looking to write Jewish characters!

I normally just lurk when reading about Lily Orchard but I thought I'd provide some resources for people who want to write Jewish characters, if you don't mind me hijacking your post @ribbonspice

First, Writing With Color has a huge list of topics the team of moderators have talked about which you can find here, including races, religions, stereotypes, misconceptions, forms discrimination can take, and religions, including Judaism. They seek out input from people of every marginalized identity they discuss, which makes it a great resource. I'll link their main navigation page, as that list is highly organized.

Something Lily mocked was the idea of teshuvah, that no wrong cannot be sufficiently atoned for. She seemed to be under the impression you just have to say you're sorry. Actually, the process is more complex than that, but forgiveness in Judaism involves quitting the behavior, apologizing, and making reparations wherever possible, to simplify things. A shorter summary than the previous link can be found here.

Jewish people who are religiously observant do not type out the word G-d out of respect. We use a - to replace the o, or we use Hashem, another name for G-d, instead. You'll see more use of Adonai than Hashem in Sephardi (Latine Jewish) communities than in Ashkenazi (European Jewish) communities but neither uses only one exclusively.

A lot of Jewish people find Christmas to be an isolating, othering time. While it is true that we try not to harsh anyone's Yuletide joy, Christmas is a series of microaggressions that build and build for a lot of us. Please don't write your Jewish characters as loving Christmas or, much more insulting, being envious of Christmas as a holiday.

My Jewish Learning is a website with a lot of articles on a wide array of Jewish topics. If you don't know something and want to find out or you just want to browse and learn passively, it's a very good resource.

One fifth of all Jewish people in the United States live at or below the poverty line. When writing Jewish people, please avoid the stereotype that we're all rich - we are, statistically speaking, most likely to be middle class, more than anything else.

The denominations of Judaism are Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform. Conservative does not mean right-wing or politically conservative. The vast majority of Jewish people are pro-LGBT+ rights, vote left wing, and even Orthodox people, our most conservative group, are against things like conversion therapy and anti-choice legislation.

Life begins at birth in Judaism. Abortion is not a sin for us.

All miztvahs (good things to do/rules according to Jewish doctrine) and commandments can be broken to save a life, including your own. If you are writing a Jewish character, don't write them as preferring to die rather than break kosher or letting the city burn rather than do superhero work on Shabbat. It's not just offensive, it's flat-out the opposite of how we're supposed to act in those situations.

Many but not all Jewish people will not enter a church building due to some complicated and hotly debated doctrine I'm not going to get into here. Almost all of us would refrain from entering during a service.

Jewish people have a Hebrew name we use for religious purposes in addition to our legal name (unless you're in Israel, where both names tend to be Hebrew). We don't run around calling each other these names, they're not a deep dark secret we don't share with outsiders and it's very cringy when people treat them like knowing the name gives you power over us or means we're deeply romantically involved in fiction. It's a bit weird and othering.

Don't call us Hebrews, treat all Jewish people as a monolith, assert we all believe the same thing, or talk about Jewish culture. There's a lot of Jewish cultures (Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim) and it's very othering to be treated like a hive mind of identical people rather than as people. Do not ascribe personality traits to all Jewish people, including positive ones like determination or hope, as that is not something you do for other groups and is distinctly othering and dehumanizing. We're not elves, we're people.

Please Google basic questions. I had one man get extremely angry when he asked if Jewish people were allowed to eat potatoes and I stared at him in shock. Had he put in 'Jewish potato' into Google, it would have autofilled with 'Jewish potato recipes', learned we've eaten potatoes for centuries and it's a staple food for many, and circumvented this. A lot of questions can be answered via some digging on your own.

It is extremely awkward for Jewish people when Christians act as if we don't know the Old Testament and the Torah overlap. We do. It's not a secret and your Jewish character should not be surprised to find this out. It's the very first thing Christians say when they try to convert us, and they do that very frequently. We're aware.

"Lizard people" is an antisemitic conspiracy theory developed by conspiracy theorist David Icke, who believes we are so inhuman we are functionally not mammals. Please do not use this term.

Hook-noses and curly hair are common Ashkenazim Jewish traits and should not be a part of your villain's character design. Goblins are hook-nosed beasts who are greedy and money obsessed; Jewish people were often not allowed to work many jobs in Europe besides trade or banking, because while banking was considered unclean in Catholicism, Jewish people were, to them, already filthy and going to Hell, so we were allowed to be employed in that sector. Goblins are gross. We're tired of them. Please avoid that.

The myth that Jewish people can't be buried in a Jewish cemetery if they have tattoos is a lie, is not based in the Torah, and was used as an excuse in Poland to dump Jewish bodies in ditches after WWII rather than seek out their families to return them to. Please do not repeat it.

You do not need a Jewish mother to be Jewish outside of Orthodox Judaism and even they will do ceremonies for people who don't have one or who are adopted. You don't need a Jewish mother to immigrate to Israel, either.

Aliens are apparently a hot button topic in Christianity but theologically they're not offensive to Jewish people. We have a long history of sci-fi writers among us and there are Jewish sci-fi anthologies. Even your most observant, G-d believing Jewish character shouldn't act horrified about this.

Jokes about Jewish people being cheap are both offensive and related to the above greedy goblin stereotype. You're going to want to avoid that one. You'll see the occasional Jewish man who's 50+ years old who makes it about himself, but it's really only okay in that context.

And finally, we are not all white passing and we are not all the same in language or practice. To give an overview:

  • Jewish people in the United States are majority Ashkenazim (plural of Ashkenazi, the singular), meaning European (with the exception of Spain, Portugal and France). As a result, most media depictions of Jewish people are of Ashkenazim people. Consequently, a lot of Jewish characters are written as using Yiddish phrases and terms. In reality, a lot of Jewish people are not Ashke, and do not use Yiddish. Ashkenazim as a term includes Russian people, other Slavic people, and England; while the United States has a lot of Polish and German Ashkenazim, the traditions of the group are not limited to those places. "Ashke" is an abbreviated term you'll hear for them, but it's not universally agreed upon if it's okay for non-Jewish people to use.
  • Sephardim, who are Spanish, Portuguese, and French in ancestry, though obviously Sephardim can be found wherever Spanish colonization took place. Buenos Aires has a kosher McDonald's, for instance. You will also see some Sephardim in North Africa (and a tiny amount in the Philippines) where they fled after being expelled from Spain during crackdowns by the Spanish Inquisition to purge the land of Jewish people. Sephardi people often (though not always) speak Ladino, which historically was also called Judeo-Spanish, though nobody's used that term in decades. Some Greek people identify as Sephardi.
  • Mizrahim Jewish people are Middle Eastern and Northern African. Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, etc. are Mizrahim. Most (but not all) of them have, after centuries of punishment, expulsion and cultural assimilation, lost their indigenous Jewish languages. Some Greek people identify as Mizrahi.
  • Yemeni, Ethiopian (commonly called Beta Israeli) and Indian Jewish people are of separate traditions from all of the aforementioned groups and the first two have their own languages, those being Judeo-Yemeni and Ge'ez respectively.
  • Not all black Jewish people in the United State are Ethiopian in origin. That's actually uncommon. Many of them have ancestors who converted. The earliest records we have of black converts are in the 1870's, so it isn't a given that their parents or grandparents are the first generation in the family to be Jewish.
  • Romani Jewish people do not identify with any of the above identities. They are ethnically Jewish by Jewish standards, they just don't view themselves as part of the aforementioned groups.
  • Bukharan Jewish people are from Uzbekistan. Other parts of Central Asia had a lot of influence from the Russian occupation of Central Asia during the USSR era, and may speak Yiddish to some degree or identify as Ashkenazim as a result of intermarriage and cultural assimilation. Bukharan Jewish people largely retained our distinct identity and do not, possibly as a result of immigration to other places that gave us more religious freedom.
  • The term "Crypto-Jews" is now a slur. It originally referred to Jewish people who stayed in countries where most Jewish people were expelled and practiced their culture in secret. Currently, it has been used for roughly 40 years by antisemitic conspiracy theorists to refer to the idea people who aren't Jewish are secretly Jewish and deceptive, tricksters, evil, etc. Do not use it. Also, this is not a distinct demographic of Jewish people, though I've heard conspiracy theorists suggest that; many people worldwide have had to hide their culture and practices for fear of penalty of death.
  • All of the aforementioned groups of Jewish people are ethnically Jewish, none of us dislike each other (other than jokes about one another's food not being as good as our mom's food), and we intermarry without any issue.

Sorry for the essay and a half here, I just felt like that might be useful as an overview/starting point for some people. I know a lot of people's parents and teachers didn't really educate them much on other groups of people. I can't go back and undo that. But I can fork over some additional information and hope it helps.

Stans trying to claim Glimmadora is “just as bad” has the exact same energy as Re*los desperately trying to demonize Finn to make their own garbage ship look better in comparison.

Nah man nah. People demonize my boy Finn!?!? Finn the guy who protected Rey from Kylo even though He was sure he had no chance of winning? Finn the guy who’s first though upon waking up from his coma was “Is Rey Okay” Finn the guy who was willing to sacrifice it all just to save Rey. Good god these people...

It’s so grating to hear people claim Finn is “obsessive”. Like..my goby has done nothing but be loving, kind, and supportive to Rey throughout the films (in the same way Glimmer was to Adora).

But of course, a POC character does something ever so slightly “upsetting” to the white fandom and suddenly it’s the end of the world.

Anyway, Finn is a sweetheart. He loves Rey with all of his heart and the feeling is mutual on Rey’s end.

The feeling is 100% mutual. Another one of Star Wars Girlboss/Malewife ships that I absolutely die for.

Exactly! They’re such sweeties who would kill and die for one another, which is way more than whatever that greaseball of a ship “Reylo” is supposed to be.

shoutout to characters that you love dearly but if you dont see them get punched in the face canonically on screen by the time this media is over there will be a problem

shoutout to characters that you love so much but they are so fucked. you need them to get hugged right now this instant and if we do not get a canon hug youll kill someone in this room right now

shoutout to characters that you NEED to see cry. you need to see them just break down sobbing because god they need it. if this guy doesnt just bawl for at least 5 minutes on screen im suing.

Shoutout to characters who fulfill all of the above criteria simultaneously

Oh of course! Don’t worry, you have no reason to feel embarrassed. I’ll make sure to spread the word.
