Despite its humble beginnings, “naive" style painting is not only recognized today, but praised for its visual poetry found lacking in other genres of painting. The artist Richard Stabbert embraces the opportunity to document personal experiences and feelings of a life sensitively lived. Shown here is his work titled: "I Believe In Summer". (acrylic on canvas) 12 x 9. Stabbert's book “Provincetown Memories” is included in the permanent collection of the Leslie - Lohman Museum

The serenata or serenade is a Mexican tradition of courtship and love. In many Mexican films from the Cine de Oro (Golden Cinema) we can find scenes in which a man, dressed as a charro and accompanied by a group of mariachis, presents himself in the middle of the night to sing before the window of the woman he loves. Despite being scenes of great beauty, they reflect the machista traditions which are still present in Mexican culture. Why can't a woman sing? Why can't a man sing for another man? These questions inspired me to paint "La Serenata", a moment of love between a charro and his loved man, as well as other paintings of queer serenatas which appropriate our heritage and reinterpet what "romantic" means.
