Toronto Police: “If Police can’t be have floats in Pride, we’ll ask the city to defund the Pride Parade.”

Honestly, let them try it. Pride has never needed funding, Pride has never needed permission. The Stonewall Riots were a response to the systemic targeting, profiling, harassment and assault of queer and trans people by the cops. Queer and trans people of colour in Toronto don’t want the police at Pride and Pride is for is, not a cishet institution that has violently oppressed and brutalized people of colour and qt folks and continues to do so. Fucking try it. We’re going to march regardless.

This is why the police should NEVER be allowed at Pride. As soon as they feel hard done by they turn around and further marginalize the LBGTQAI community. How many *Millions* of dollars do they get from the city??!! Fuck off!

The Toronto Police budget for 2016 was $1 BILLION DOLLARS.

How can the Police Unions and Police Services pretend to be allies if they are going to essentially blackmail Pride for their inclusion?

Do cops feel “excluded” from TIFF, Luminato, or Caribana for not having floats and booths? Why should the police unions and services be entitled to participation in other groups’ events?

Toronto already doesn’t provide as much funding to Pride compared to other large events. Toronto funds TIFF with over $1 million and Luminato with $400k.  Last year, Pride Toronto’s net income was $58k, without this funding the organization would be loosing money each year. Pride generates millions of dollars for the city. The 2013 event was estimated to have an economic impact of $286 million. For comparison, TIFF’s impact is $189 million. Pride brings $100 million more in revenue, but receives a quarter of the funding. 

The Police Union’s request is absolutely absurd. The union should not be allowed to bully the city and Toronto Pride this way.

Last I checked, police officers are NOT being excluded from Pride.  They’re free to attend as individuals.  Just like everyone else.

Maybe this policy has changed, but if it has, I certainly haven’t heard anything about it.  And unless it has,  attempts to frame this policy as ‘excluding police officers’ are deliberately misleading.

Yeah, that’s the policy still as far as I can tell. And this policy was voted overwhelmingly in favour by Pride Toronto, becoming official policy for the organization.

Its just no floats, and no marching in a police uniform. If the police want to attend, they can attend. 

Nobody is kicking the Police out of pride. No cop is being ‘excluded’ from attending Pride.

Time to toss out the princess and bring in a queen!

I’m considering coming out to my family as non-binary, and so today I brought up the subject of non-binary gendering/transgendering with my Dad as a casual conversational topic. He’s told me that if somebody is born a boy then they “should stay a fucking boy” and not trans to a girl or be a boy some days/girl other days/genderless other days.

I told him that I think gender identity should be something one can choose for themselves, and he says that nobody thinks like that and anybody who is trans/non-binary will just be shunned by every member of society they meet. He doesn’t think that people support n-b/t communities, because he doesn’t. He says to me that not staying one’s natural gender is wrong and against the point of being born a boy/girl.

Every person who reblogs this will have their URL written in a full-size writing book and when it is full I will show it to my father to illustrate to him the amount of people who believe that being non-binary is a valid gender identity.

He needs to lose his skin privileges
