Mental Crop Rotation
When farmers grow the same crop too many years in a row, it can leave their soil depleted of minerals and other nutrients that are vital to the health of their fields.
To avoid this, farmers will often alternate the crops that they grow because some plants will use up different minerals (such as nitrogen) while other plants replenish those minerals. This process is known as “crop rotation.”
So the next time you find that you need to step away from a project to work on something else for a while, don’t beat yourself up for “quitting” that project. Give yourself permission to practice “mental crop rotation” to maintain a healthy brain field.
Because I’ve found that when that unnecessary guilt and pressure are removed from the process, a good mental crop rotation can help you feel more energized and invigorated than ever once you’re ready to rotate back to that project.
: A crucial part of crop rotation is that the field is let fallow sometimes. You plant what’s called a “cover crop”, which is something you don’t expect to harvest– it’s there for its roots to hold the soil in place, and often it’ll be what’s called a nitrogen-fixer, i.e. a plant that can pull nitrogen out of the air and fix it into the soil with its roots (but sometimes it won’t, sometimes it’s really just there to shelter the soil surface), and then you’ll till in that cover crop, or let the frost kill it and the stalks lie as mulch, and then you’ll rotate productive crops back into that field the next season.
It’s important, though, to understand that during the fallow period, no nutrients are removed from that ground, and nothing is expected of it. Whatever the land grows then, it keeps, and it gets tilled back in or decomposes in place, to return its energy to the earth.
We’re not allowed, in our current society, to just let our minds be fallow for a bit, to produce nothing for export, to make nothing that can be sold. But it’s part of good land stewardship, to give every field time when it doesn’t need to give you anything back.
So yes, grow and produce different things from time to time, rotate them around your mind and exercise different mental muscles, take different things from your creative processes, yes– but also, give yourself a fallow spell now and again, and let the field of your mind grow things for itself to keep, to break down and save for later.
Positive mental health AND agriculture??!?

A statement released by The German Chess Federation in response to FIDE’s new policies prohibiting trans women from playing chess against other women — The English and French Chess Federations have also echoed the same sentiment: this decision is based entirely in transmisogynist bigotry and exclusion as a means of further removing trans people from public life, and is not compatible with non discrimination laws.
ID: White text on a blue background, with the DSB chess piece logo in the corner. The text reads as follows -
The German Chess Federation (DSB) has a clear position: we do not exclude trans women. In Germany, a trans woman already became German Champion in the 2000s and trans women will of course be allowed to participate in all German tournaments for women in the future. The German Chess Federation is not changing this practice. In doing so, we stand together with European partners, such as the French Chess Federation, which handles this in exactly the same way.
We have serious concerns that these new FIDE rules are not compatible with the legal situation in several countries. If a person is legally recognized as a woman, it is incomprehensible to us what FIDE still wants to check and why it needs two years for this — as stipulated in the new rules.
From the point of view of the German Chess Federation, these regulations issued by the World Chess Federation for the registration of transgender chess players are an example of how discrimination arises when those affected are not involved in any way.
The German Chess Federation is committed to the well-being of all regardless of origin, age, ethnicity, skin colour, disability, religion, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. No one should have to experience violence and discrimination.
Y’all in the American SW and west Mexico better check the national hurricane center and your weather for this weekend and next week.
Hurricane Hilary is about to make landfall and that whole desert area is supposed to get a years worth of rain or more. Death Valley is supposed to get twice the annual rainfall. Severe winds, massive flooding, and landslides are all strong possibilities.
This is gonna get ugly. Please spread the word. This is a majorly anomalous event and people may be unaware of the threat headed their way.
Flash floods are definitely gonna kill people, so here’s your regularly scheduled PSA:
Desert soil does not absorb a significant amount of water. It reaches maximum saturation very very quickly, and all the rest of the water rushes downhill. Even if you can’t tell that the ground is not perfectly flat, the water can. And it will move. Quickly. No, faster than that. Nope, still faster. If you try to cross moving floodwater, you will get swept downstream and probably die.
Do not try to wade in/cross flood water that is any deeper than the thickness of the sole of an average athletic shoe, no I am not kidding, the water will get deeper literally while you’re standing in it.
This goes for cars, too. I’ve seen entire vehicles getting swept downstream in flash floods because the driver thought they could cross the “puddle” and Found Out.
Stay safe, y’all.
also if you're going into water intentionally (cleanup, obviously as things RECEDE), PROTECT YOUR EYES. Flood water is NASTY AS HELL and you will be getting a tetanus booster right off the bat if you end up in the ER for any reason.
Related to the above: After wading in the water, get somewhere with clean water and wash every inch of your body. The water being nasty means: There can be gases, oils, other harmful/irritating contaminants, there can be sewage (probably will be tbh), and then (And I'm sorry for this) animals will be dead in the water around you. Things like squirrels, birds, etc. They will be decomposing in there. You're basically wading in a soup of the nastiest shit you can imagine. So, post clean-up in the water: Shower, then GET YOUR FRICKIN' TETANUS BOOSTER.
Also, if you have a vagina, be extra careful. If you think yeast infections are nasty, they're nothing compared to contact dermatitis of the vulva, and the vulva is EXTREMELY sensitive along with the vagina. (Source: Me. I had an allergic reaction to a laundry detergent and it was the WORST experience of my life, I can't imagine how much worse it'd be in THAT kind of water.)
There can also be EXPOSED LIVE POWER LINES UNDER THE WATER. You legitimately have no idea what is in flood water, what is being carried, what kind of debris is at the bottom. If you can at all avoid going into the flood water, DO NOT GO INTO THE FLOOD WATER.
if you suspect you have POTS, even if its very mild - seek treatment (if you have the means to do so ofc) . don't just assume its too mild to bother a doctor with
When my POTS was mild, treatment was really effective and helped me with so many things I didn't even know I was struggling with. All of a sudden I could work, exercise and do hobbies that I couldn't before. I had never fainted, only had noticeable pre syncope some days. but standing was taking me so much effort that I didn't even realise
Your symptoms are not too mild to matter
Potentially silly question, but what are the treatment options for mild POTS?
Salt, electrolyte drinks (preferably sugar free, youll be drinking this ALOT) and water. 3 liters min 6liters a day is the most I’ve been told to drink so far, salty snacks my go to is jerky instead of chips, compression socks
My buddy suggested I get tested for pots, since my symptoms matched his. They determined that since my blood pressure skyrocketed instead of dropped, it's not pots, but something else in the ANS that's disordered.
Pre syncope is So Much Fun. Ech.
It can definitely be potentially dangerous to ingest large quantities of salt. Its really REALLY important to get tested for pots. What works for POTS is not what works for others, thank you for also bringing this to light! Its super important to find answers! And get the right tests that can get you the right answers for your body 🥰
at dinner people were talking about how much they cried during their weddings and my one cousin said she was SO determined not to cry, made it through the entire ceremony, but then during the reception her husband leaned over and asked 'hey, do you want me to get together a plate of roast beef and hide it in our room so we can have Night Meats?' and she went 'night meats?' and started sobbing because that was so romantic to her
Two-headed tortoise Janus turns 25!
Janus, who also has two hearts, two pairs of lungs and two distinct personalities, would not have survived long in the wild as he cannot retract his heads into his shell to seek shelter from predators. But at the Geneva Natural History Museum, where he hatched in 1997, Bourgoin and her team of carers - who believe he is the world’s oldest bicephalic tortoise - can cater for his every need!
He is under constant surveillance in case he flips over, which could be fatal, and survived a bladder stone operation in 2020. His heads need periodic treatment with vaseline to stop them getting sore when they rub together.
His two personalities also generate different moods and tastes that can occasionally lead to conflict, for example over which direction to walk. “The right head is more curious, more awake, it has a much stronger personality. The left head is more passive and loves to eat,” Bourgoin said, adding that one head was partial to endives and the other to carrots.
This is wonderful. I love this so much. Conjoined turtles, having a long happy life and being taken care of is wonderful.
As someone who has mispronounced so many words because I never actually heard them. I appreciate this post
obviously institutionally and ideologically speaking judaism is imperfect and deserving of critique and can be fundamentalist and harmful (much like any institution) but most goyim simply do not have anything meaningful or significant to say on the subject. be so serious youve never entered a single jewish space in your life and you can count the number of jews youve spoken to on one hand you just do not have any hard hitting incisive commentary to offer us. you are not rocking anyones world with the idea that sometimes judaism can be bad
D&D has become so much more fun since it clicked for me that I'm not the character, I'm the writer in charge of the character
If you're the character, bad rolls and bad calls reflect badly on you. You want to Win because that means you're doing D&D right, and if things go wrong, it's because you're doing it wrong.
If you're the writer, your number one job is to do things to your character that the character does not like because that gives them the chance to be interesting.
in depth review of 9 sorts of whiteboard markers assessed on a variety of criteria
well worth a read.
Neuland really said “let’s make the best fucking white board marker line on the market with the most colours and the nicest smell ever” and then went and did just othat
I think it’s time for us to all collectively return to the library. Get a card, go to a club meeting, volunteer on an off day, rent some equipment. You don’t even have to read a book. But since the digital world is rapidly becoming a subscription-only hellscape requiring a criminal amount of private personal information to use even CASUALLY, the library has become our last safe haven to just exist with information present and not have our labour or information exploited for money.
