something i love so dearly about yuzumako is how the lesbian coding of their relationship is so healing, rather than self-destructive?? by that i mean, so much queer coding is filtered through the lens of, here is this character whose queer identity is so fraught that it often leads them to lashing out and misery, & you always think how much happier they'd be if they could make peace with themselves..... but with yuzuki and makoto, the safety and peace they feel around each other always serves as the anecdote to their struggles, ESPECIALLY with boys.

in ch 20 yuzuki is disappointed with boys endlessly complimenting her painting w/o looking at it—seeing her as a romantic conquest rather than caring abt her as a person. the same chapter, it's makoto who actually cares about her painting & yuzuki's artistry EXACTLY how she hoped. the loneliness & resentment yuzu experiences is directly tied to heteronormativity, with boys assuming that they can disrespect her boundaries since she's a pretty girl to be "won over"—only for makoto's actions to parallel the same set up BUT she always demonstrates a truer understanding of yuzu as a person & friend throughout the process, and every time it brings yuzu such a sense of safety & comfort that she NEVERRRRR feels around boys pursuing her!!

there's such an intense lesbian coding to yuzu's avoidance of male romantic advances as opposed to how she leans into not only female friendship but specifically to makoto's own feelings for her shining through—and again, i love this because it's so positive & warm. rather than queerness being a source of anguish, makoto brings yuzu more joy than heteronormativity ever does.

I’m catching up with the Skip to Loafer manga and chapter 27 really cemented my love for Yuzuki and Makoto’s relationship.

Makoto had just experienced a bitter sweet date with a boy while feeling absolutely down with her self image and self esteem. Feeling that no matter how hard she tries, she’ll never be seen as cute or beautiful.

That no amount of work on her part will ever make the boy she likes see her as someone cute or pretty.

Even worse is that in her eyes its really hard for her to look in the mirror and see herself as someone who might be worthy or deserving of such affection.

So what does Yuzuki do after Makoto after realizing that Makoto is feeling down? She invites her to hang out, making sure that her friend won’t end her day on a sour note.

Yuzu literally looks straight at Makoto and tells her that she looks really cute. and oh my god I cannot handle how good this scene was and why it solodified my love for these two together. The fact that Yuzu realized that Makoto probably had a negative image of herself and largely felt unseen and wanted to reassure her that in her eyes, she is someone beautiful. That she see’s her.

Im having a really hard time believing that these two aren’t low key crushing on each other. They have such a deep and loving bond that prompts them to comfort one another and realize how important they are to each other in their lives.

This panel once again reminded me of the series' great writing, and I'll tell you why.

Yasaka, the girl who's still so new to the series has quickly become a very intriguing character. Skip-to-loafer has always been good at normalizing and in a way, un-villanizing these common tropes we always see in manga and real life. it makes us really see the other side's feelings in all of the chaos and how the "bad side" depicted as just one single thing in many mangas and even real life is usually not like that. that's one aspect of the series that somehow makes it even more comforting. the first example was Mika, the classic mean girl character with her own feelings of guilt, whose cold heart melted at the friendship Mitsumi showed her.

now here comes Yasaka, and to be honest, while I may not necessarily relate to Yasaka myself, I've seen many people like her. to calculate your every move is not as cool as it sounds, it merely means that you're excessively worried about how the other side might percieve it and are afraid of conflict. while that may not be a bad thing for the mass, it's certainly not a good thing for the person themselves. Yasaka leads this apparent "perfect life" surrounded by men who admire her at every corner, and seems to even want them for herself because she likes the attention. her friends- if you could call them that would assume she's the type to be perfectly maintained all the time. yet here she lies, in her messy room, her make-up material all over and clothes fallen everywhere. the contrast between the image she puts out for herself and her actual life is perfectly shown.

when she asks says how she must've received a lot of love growing up to not get caught up in what people say, Mutsumi gets upset. it's understandable why she would get upset, and shows that unlike Shima, Yasaka at times isn't afraid to say her feelings even if the other party takes offense - but it honestly just breaks my heart.

it does take lots of love to ignore the negative opinions that people might have for you, the only time it doesn't is when the lack of love itself becomes overly abundant and you entirely stop caring. Yasaka didn't say this out of malice or to chide Mitsumi, no, she said this honestly as an observation. People grow according to their surrounding, they're shaped by every twist and turn in their lives. what might be true for someone might not be true for another, and thus they end up as separate individuals with their own sense of mind and feelings.

Can Yasaka be called a people-pleaser just because she reads her surroundings? not quite. she is openly disliked by her schoolmates and doesn't even seem to care that she is.

her situation can be compared with Yuzu, except, while Yuzu had a distaste for the attention she got and the fact that she got disliked by the people around her, Yasaka grew around it. she learned to crave the attention she got, trying to replace it for that which is missing from her own life. she didn't bother to try to make friends, she was content with what she had even if it meant not having such people as her friends. she doesn't dislike girls either, she was open to the idea of getting along with Mitsumi and even confirmed that she was right for getting angry at the girls' and shima's behavior.

Yasaka believes Shima to be a person like her, and thus is not interested in him. though I believe that is not absolutely the case, since there are other differences in their character, this shows a sense of dislike towards herself. it is not surprising, people like this tend to be very objective about themselves. not necessarily hating themselves or having a inferiority complex, but in a way that they understand where they lie differently from other people.

This is just my own personal interpretation of her character up till now, though, haha. I also liked how Mitsumi reacted to her words. yes, it is true that it was a privilege that she was loved so much growing up, and yes, others didn't get to experience that as much as she did. but that does not demean her feelings. she wanted Shima to get mad for her, and that was not wrong for her. just because she understands him a little better now does not mean that her she has to kill her own feelings, Shima does not want that either. Mitsumi is a perceptive girl and one very lovable, not going to lie. It is strange how she might be the character I'm most like, and yet I find her so much more lovely to other people. I guess this is a trait we all possess, but it is alright, since I am lovely enough for myself. anyways, for both these young girls, still finding their ways in the world, I wish nothing but happiness. Misaki-sensei truly is a magical writer.

been digging into, and really enjoying, framed ink. it's really helped me bridge the gap on a few comic concepts. i'd consider myself an intermediate illustrator/portrait artist, and i'd struggled for years to grip the idea of a page composition that has a lot of smaller compositions in it, like a collage. i'm having a lot of fun. what helps is that all of the example comics in it were drawn for the book and also shred incredible penis

marcos mateu-mestre please for the love of god you need to stop. there's no penis left but you just keep shredding

i'm on to framed perspective. one thing i appreciate is that there's never going to be a way to jazz up the technical elements of perspective drawing. it's all grids, and that's fine. i mean, what can you do, throw in a bunch of beautiful half naked women and call it a d

most of the time everything sucks but when the sky is blanketed in dark blue-grey clouds after heavy raining and the sun starts to peek through the clouds so that the tops of trees glint pale green and every white structure is starkly, blindingly silhouetted against the sky i’m ok.
