@gk-o

Just a place for everything I like 😁

Translation of part 1 of Jinyoung’s promotional message for TDJ! @xxcaribbean Thank you so much for sending this!

Jinyoung: To everyone watching this broadcast and to [couldn’t catch the Japanese surname], Fujiwara-shi and Miyazaki-shi, hello, it’s Jinyoung.

Question onscreen: Why did you decide to appear in this work?

Jinyoung: I thought the script was really good and [switches to Japanese] Hallyu senpai-san Ji Sung-senpai was in it. That was the reason. (It’s so cute how much he looks up to Ji Sung!)

Question onscreen: What did you pay attention to (take care with) when palying Gaon?

Jinyoung: All the roles I’ve done thus far have been of characters in their 20s, whereas the character’s age in this role was close to 30. So I thought I should act in a more mature way. Because this character’s quite sensitive, even a little grumpy, and is quite forthright with his words, I was careful with how I portrayed those scenes.

Question onscreen: What kind of character is Gaon?

Jinyoung: He’s a very righteous person. Though there always a lot asked of him, he pushes forward boldly. I don’t think it’s easy to keep going the way he does. I think he’s a realistic and righteous person. His thoughts and feeling change depending on the situation, and when what he believes in is shattered, his reaction (response) is also very realistic. If being righteous was all there was to him, then he wouldn’t have been very charming, but that realism to his character was why I thought I had to take on this role.

I just stalked Jinyoung’s instagram and found this pic from a bts of filming the TDJ teaser, and ISN’T THIS JI SUNG’S SIGNATURE FACE? Like not one drama goes by without him making this pout.

Mirroring the most sincere form of love, imho. So that had me wondering, what parts of Yohan do you think Gaon would unconsciously mirror, and vice versa?

I watched that ending 1000x times and here’s my take.

This is Ji Sung we’re talking about. If we were seeing a goodbye, there would be anguish, pain in his eyes. Yohan said he didn’t care if humanity fell as long as he had Gaon and Elijah and we’re supposed to believe that he’ll take a parting so easily? No way.

First up, Yo Han’s message to Gaon on those blueprints says: “The clean up is done. Now, isn’t there something you have to do?” This wasn’t him telling Gaon to singlehandedly fix the system forever. They both know that’s not possible. Gaon’s task, which he says himself, is to do what he can to build a world that won’t need Yohan. Then he’s done. There is an endpoint to Gaon’s work.

Yohan goes all the way back only one month later to a country where his face is well known and where he “died” as a criminal (fascinating commentary on legacy and how heo joongse and min jungho wanted to be remembered as heroes while yohan was like idgaf). And he returns for Gaon. He’s there for all of two seconds, but he leaves without talking to him. Why?

Even when Gaon chases after him, Yohan leaves with a salute. That would have been our ending, if Gaon stopped chasing him at that moment.

That’s what Yohan wanted to find out. Gaon’s been through so much without any time to process any of it. Soohyun is dead, Yohan killed her, no wait he didn’t, his father figure is evil, Gaon almost ruined Yohan’s life, Yohan almost died twice. The man is a wreck. He needed time to process and heal. He needed time away from Yohan.

So Yohan gives him that time. The first time Gaon came to him was because he wanted justice. Now, he wants Gaon to come to him because he wants him.

So he makes his presence known and leaves, offering a salute as goodbye in case Gaon only feels gratitude and nothing else. But that is not what Gaon feels. He keeps going and chases Yohan down, calling him by name. Yohan stops and looks nervous before turning, then sticks his right hand out. Rather than this being an attempt at a hug (which seems out of character for Yohan to gesture that way), it was a “here I am, now what?”

Their expressions at the start are so telling. Yohan looks closed off for a few seconds while Gaon looks desperate and heartbroken, like he’s wondering if Yohan’s leaving him behind again. But Gaon starts to smile first. Yohan immediately tears up. Slowly their expressions soften, building on each other. Gaon has such evident yearning in his eyes, before he smiles with sheer adoration and Yohan looks like he’s in awe, like he can’t believe it.

Yohan nods like he’s come to a decision and gives Gaon this very clear “see you at home” face and saunters off. Ga On was alone for a month yes, but he won’t be alone anymore and once his work is over, he’ll never be alone again.

And honestly. ONE MONTH. I’ve seen gajillion dramas have one year, two year separations. Heck Ji Sung’s last drama, Doctor John had a 3 year separation! But Yohan isn’t waiting, and that’s proof enough that he plans on holding onto his man. This is a happy ending. Because Gaon’s work will end, Elijah will recover and our lawful family will be together again.

I have a request for Yohan secretly has a sweet tooth and Gaon is really good at baking

  • No one knows this about Yohan, but he has quite the sweet tooth
  • He always had to snack on something sweet, at almost all times of the day
  • At home in the study, there’s a small little glass dish full of different sweets and at work there’s a bowl of lollipops on his desk
  • During meetings, Yohan can usually be found discretely sucking on some sort of candy or mint
  • Gaon is literally his savior whenever he starts to live at Yohan’s house because when Gaon’s stressed, he bakes
  • And most people, they’re either good at cooking or they’re good at baking. They’re never both. Jokes on the world because Gaon was good at both
  • And because Gaon bakes whenever he’s stressed, and because being a judge is fucking stressful as shit, he bakes…almost every day
  • Now Yohan, who has a very big sweet tooth, is always happy to sample whatever Gaon makes because 1) the sweet tooth, 2) Gaon’s food is fucking bomb, and 3) he likes seeing Gaon’s happy smile whenever he declares that something he made was good
  • And since Gaon likes to bake, he also likes to experiment with different recipes, so he’ll always ask for Yohan’s help in taste-testing the new recipes. And Yohan never says no
  • Elijah also enjoys eating the goodies that Gaon makes because they’re comforting and always delicious
  • Yohan and Elijah slowly start to gain weight from eating both Gaon’s food and his desserts but neither of them really mind because they’re finally eating well and seeing Gaon happy when they eat his food makes them happy
  • And if Gaon’s happy, then everyone’s happy

Kang Yohan with his hair down

I like this version better

“I trained myself to constantly visualize Yo-han’s life,” said Ji Sung. “I did my best to understand his life and create the kind of emotions he would have felt in his life. Even if I couldn’t understand him, I accepted him wholly. Throughout production, all I thought about was the life of Yo-han. And it made me wonder about the kind of justice he needed.”

[...]

The roles Ji Sung takes are all very different and many might be seen as bold choices, but they do have one thing in common.

“I don’t hesitate to go after the role that moves my heart,” he said.

Yohan wanted you to continue living, even if it was because of your hatred towards him.
