I love both those moments so much. The part with Len is heartbreaking. These are the best answers and inspired me with Bethyl pain 😭. I wanted to add some little things that also stand out to me as “protective” Daryl moments.
I think Daryl is a great character because he is protective and chivalrous, but it’s very subtle, as it’s just who he is. He doesn’t put on a big show about it or expect anything in return. He is also, as Aaron points out in season 5, an extraordinary judge of character, and he knows exactly how much Beth can “take care of herself” vs. how much she actually needs his help in certain situations. Part of why he’s so good for Beth is because he’s not always trying to shelter her from harm. He trusts her to be strong, even sort of demands it of her, but he’s always right there if she needs him. Some other moments where Daryl is being subtly “protective” of Beth:
This is one of my favorite parts of “Still.” This moment takes place right at the beginning of the episode. when Beth and Daryl are hiding from the walker horde in the trunk. They’ve been in there a long time, and Beth is starting to get worked up. Daryl calmly holds out his hand and nods to her, reassuringly, as if to say, “Just hold on a little longer. It’ll be okay.” She then nods to him, relieved, like she understands. In this moment, he’s both physically protecting her by staying on guard in he trunk, and also emotionally reassuring her, which is a kind of protection. It’s these little things that make Daryl not just a great warrior but a full blown knight. He is always trying to reassure and comfort those he must protect. It’s not a heartless endeavor. He truly wants her to feel safe.
This takes place a little later in “Still,” when Beth goes off from their “suck-ass camp” to try and find some booze on her own. She leaves because Daryl is being unresponsive to her suggestions, and then she is almost immediately in the way of several walkers. She hides and cleverly distracts the walkers with a rock. In the end, it turns out she was okay, and she took care of it on her own, but the camera pans a little to show us that Daryl was there the whole time. He let her deal with it, but if things had gotten out of hand, he would have been there to save her. This is where we see how Daryl is protective, but not controlling. Like @twdmusicboxmystery said, he is very good at letting Beth have space and take the lead, and he wants her to try.
There are also all these little moments, particularly in “Alone.” The piggy-back ride, and how he insists they stop to wrap her ankle, and how he wraps her ankle himself, are all protective gestures. He tells Beth to “stay put” when the one-eyed dog comes to the door, and when she follows him anyway, he reiterates, “I thought I told you to stay put.” She then responds with such charm: “But Daryl. You said there was a dog.” He then gingerly touches her back and guides her to the kitchen. This is a protective moment.
Daryl constantly makes little sacrifices for the people around him, almost always as protective schemes. He is ultimately selfless.
Beth also protects Daryl several times throughout “Still”/“Alone,” but Beth is usually protecting Daryl from himself, from his own anger and delusions. This is basically the premise of their entire fight, as Beth forces Daryl to admit the true reason for his anger and negativity that day, and just as he’s about to break, she physically grabs him, reminding him that he’s still alive, and so is she, and he’s not alone. This is, I think many would agree, one of the most beautiful moments of the entire series and one of the only times Daryl allows himself to be completely vulnerable with another person.
Anyway sorry this just stirred up something in me. I miss them ❤️😭
