I think Jesse initially feels some sort of loss when AJ starts really growing up. He misses him being little and holding his hand and coming to sleep in his bed for nightmares (or Jesse going to sleep in his for nightmares). There's nothing like a snuggle from a 3 yr old!! But as AJ officially reaches his teenage years that changes a bit, because now that he IS older, he and Jesse can talk about more complex things. AJ is smart and they have good conversations and the kid is funny. He always finds a way to make Jesse laugh. And Jesse feels comfortable talking to him about stuff he wouldn't have had the capacity to understand as a child. Eventually, Jesse reframes it not as him losing his baby, but gaining one of the best friends of his life.
