fuck it so you know how difficult it was for me for years ro find diablo 1 for pc? and i couldnt find it without piracy HELL I RESORTED TO GETTING A PS1 DIABLO ROM AND AN EMULATOR to play it. obviously pirated cause fuck it if you can find that for digital sale. idk if thats changed at all i seem to have seen a diablo 1 in the internet archive later on but when i was 19 and wanted to relive that game i coul not have done so without piracy bc it was fucking abandonware. it shouldnt be that way
Only 13 percent of video games are readily playable and accessible. No other form of media is as endangered as video games. There is no legal path to preserve or archive video games. You can go to libraries and archives for books years out of print. You can rent a movie or download a pdf. There is no legal equivalent for video games. Games companies do not double as archival organisations and they never will. They have never been about preserving. They are about selling. Which is not inherently evil compared to anyone else but they along with the law are directly preventing archivers and preservationists from doing their job and allowing this entire medium to be experienced in the future.
Think of some of the most influential video games of all time. How many of them can you play right now. Without piracy. How many of these could your not very technology literate friend play. How do you think this is affecting not only the wider industry now but also people in the future. And for completely arbitrary meaningless reasons.
Everyone saying "just pirate them". do you know how to dump a rom? Do you know how easily pirate sites get destroyed and taken down as a direct result of people sharing them? Do you know what horrific things nintendo has done to the very people who have made it possible to pirate those video games? Especially switch games. Have you read the article which you are reblogging?

listen I say this with patience bc some people may genuinely have not thought about this before but if you firmly say “AI art is terribly unethical and steals from artists” (which is correct) but then turn around and use voice AIs to generate songs/voice lines that sound like your favourite voice actors or singers……………………………………that is also AI art and it is also terribly unethical
