My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.

This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.

What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.

So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.

Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.

The thing that I love the most about Doctor Who is that it’s just SOOOOOO bad. It’s awful. It’s dreadful. It’s cheesy and stupid and terrible. It has dialogue like “I am the beep of all the meeps!” It’s truly the most embarrassing cringeworthy thing you’ve ever seen. It’s been that way for 60 years. It’s gonna be that way for another 60. It doesn’t matter what kind of budget or fan base they receive. It’s always gonna be this stupid.

I love it so fucking much.

I’m increasingly worried by all the people on my dash calling themselves insane for loving stories in the way humans have loved stories our whole history. “The brain rot is spreading” — you mean you were changed by art? “I’m not normal about this” — you were moved by it? You felt human emotions about it? “I’m about to be so annoying” — you’re going to talk about art? You’re going to be passionate? You’re going to think deeply about it? You’re going to feel love for the work of someone’s soul? You are not a consumer and art is not a product to be casually used! You are a human and stories are the beating heart of our humanity! You must feel everything and you must know that it is normal!

I see some people saying “But I’m not normal about it — I do annoy my friends. Most people don’t feel this strongly about stories.” I know! I’m neurofunky and so is half my family! We monologue, we obsess, we daydream. That’s how art gets made. That’s how cultures and lives are transformed. I tattooed Tolkien’s Smaug under a starry sky across my bare upper back because Tolkien’s stories changed my life and made me brave, and most people smile fondly and change the subject when I tell them that! They were entertained by the movies, but not remade. We are not wired like everyone. But no one is wired like “everyone.” There is no everyone, there’s just people. We feel for stories what some people feel for a shouting crowd at a sports game, or the music moving through their bodies in the club, or the clean exhaustion of a marathon well run, and those are all ways to be human and feel everything, too. This is ours! And it makes the world better!! We can call ourselves literary or poetic or fans or enthusiasts or daydreamers or whatever we like, but we do not need to measure ourselves by those who don’t understand us. We are a facet of the human prism and we guide the light too.

The 60th Doctor Who Special really said, fuck terfs, were gonna have a trans Character with a loving and supporting family and have the doctor ask an alien its pronouns.
