24 and 26 for the university asks?

24. Best book you’ve had to read for a course?

I'm a lit student now so I've had to read quite a few this year (although not all of them in full) and idk this is not a book but I really loved the Middle Dutch story of Beatrijs (wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrijs). Honestly, study book wise I just remember the terrible ones, there isn't one that I thought was particularly good. Plus those study books are so intricately linked to my experience of the course itself, I can't unlink it haha

26. Favourite online resource?

historische woordenboeken <333 didn't even have to think twice

I think you sent this to the wrong blog lmao, but I'll reblog it with the one it should be on!

21. If you couldn’t study the subject you study now, what would you study?

That a very hard question for me because when I was starting university, I wasn't sure whether to study history or languages. I got a degree in history and I absolutely loved it. I'm now studying historical linguistics and literature, basically combining my two life-long interests. I have thought about studying other things though, like heritage studies, archival studies or anthropology. So probably I'd be doing something like that, but I'm a humanities gal through and through lmao

10 and 12 for the uni asks please!

10. What surprised you the most about university?

I found it hard to think of something because I think my general idea of uni was pretty accurate, but I guess how hard it was to find some rooms lmao (Plateau-Rozier I'm looking at you). But really that shouldn't have been a surprise because I'm terrible at orienting myself

12. What has been the most interesting class you’ve taken?

This one is very hard because I've taken so many interesting classes. I think this year Book History was the most interesting one, but I also had a class on Dutch grammar and I'm the kind of nerd who thinks that's interesting too. I learned A Lot Of Stuff in my class about the history of universities that I took while on Erasmus. I also took two anthropology classes that I loved and a class on the history of the islamic world which was great i mean you can't make me choose this is too hard. I can make you a list of classes that I loved but you can't make me choose one

this looks so fun! if you want to know more about my university life send me some #’s

A friend of mine gave me the most amazing explanation for why nutella should have the article das and I feel the intense need to spread this theory. so basically nutella is actually the plural form of nutellum, the smallest unit of nutella (yes in this explanation nutella is a separate element made of the atom nutellum, it is one of the edelmetalle). following latin convention, the suffix -um signifies neutrum. so now you may be thinking (like I was) that actually the plural explanation means that it should be die nutella. But no. apparently (she is a linguistics student i am not i am fully trusting her on this) some plural forms use singular articles bc the thing is seen as one thing, not a bunch of small things. this is why one should say das nutella and not die nutella

Avatar

While I agree that 'das Nutella' is correct and everybody else ist wrong, I would use a different reasoning, because in the end it's a loan word, so arguing with the original grammar (of a made-up brandname nontheless) can be a bit tricky.

However if we want to connect latin and German grammar, -ella signals is a diminutive, which in German are signalled by -chen and -lein. And, more importantly, in German diminutive forms are generally neuter, therefore das is the right article to use.

And while we're at it, Frikadelle & Berliner are also the correct ways of saying other things. And don't even think about using anything else but die for Butter.

aber "ella" ist spanisch für "sie" -> feminin -> die nutella

If that was the origin of the name of nutella, sure.

We should turn Speak Your Language Day into Speak Your Language Week, in my opinion. Maybe Month. Que tal?

RB if you agree :)

Or maybe a monthly thing. First Sunday each month or something.

or perhaps the first Monday of the month, as in :

Mother-tongue Monday

Moedertaal maandag

Muttersprachemontag

Lundi des langues maternelles

יום שני של שפת אם

Δευτέρα του δημώδους διαλεκτου

Понедельник просторечий

اثنین لغة الـأم (I tried... the alliteration is a bit of a stretch and I'm not entirely sure the grammar is right... in fact there may be a few grammatical errors in the other languages too. but as a proof of concept ? and we do like alliterative holidays here on tumblr.edu)

ik weet niet of de tweede Afrikaans of Nederlands hoort te zijn, maar als het Nederlands is, schrijf je het aan elkaar zoals in het Duits!

I really wanted to go to the musical instrument museum in Brussels but I didn't have time :( the house of European history is also really interesting as long as you don't get one of the noon tours

Avatar

oh that does look like an interesting museum too, definitely adding it to the list !! yet another reason to go back to Belgium !

y'know whenever I get a recommendation or learn about something new to do/visit in Belgium, it reminds me of an article I read back in the '00s. apparently Belgium is consistently voted as the most boring country in Europe — and honestly I found that intriguing ! like, I'm not a particularly excitable or high-energy person, so a "boring" place actually sounds idyllic !! for a time, this was the main reason I wanted to visit the country lol (of course after studying French and Dutch/Flemish, and after joining langblr and meeting some wonderful Belgians, those became the primary motivations for wanting to visit)

but now every time I learn something interesting about Belgium, my first reaction is "well, that's not boring at all !" and I can't help but wonder what the methodology or criteria are for decided a country is boring ?

Oooh that museum is great! I went there with a group when I was in music school (which is like a hobby here, not like my main school). Anyways they had a very interesting collection and I’d love to go back!
