Those of us who are committed communists in the west should recognize that socialist victory will disempower us in many ways and will force lifestyle changes we may not enjoy once we have lost the spoils of imperialism. It’s maybe not what we should advertise to those who aren’t yet committed, but its something that those of us who truly believe in socialism should come to terms with. 

I’d argue that this is largely incorrect unless you’re already fairly upper class. Using rough numbers, for the United States the median household income is about $59,039 per year, while the gross domestic product is around $18.57 trillion, and there are approximately 126.22 million households. Now obviously a socialist revolution would entail a whole lot more than just playing around with these numbers, but for the sake of argument let’s pretend we were going to split the country’s GDP evenly across every household instead of giving such a huge portion of it to the obscenely wealthy like we do now. That would give us around $147,124 dollars per household - but let’s assume that giving up imperialism knocks out a large chunk of the GDP. Pretending we split everything evenly, the GDP would have to drop below 40% of what it is now before the median household income went under the real life $59 thousand. That means that even if transitioning to socialism caused a solid half of the country’s annual income to disappear, the average American would still be materially better off than they are now.

Its not a question of GDP and median household income because the goal of a socialist state is to transition to communism and away from currency and money anyway which means its not our central concern, and median income means almost nothing as the removal of market economies takes place. 

Its a matter of industry and agriculture. While a huge amount of agriculture is done in the US, we also have high agricultural imports from the third world which we have protected and ensured access to through imperialist free trade agreements which would be lost under a socialist revolutionary society. We would have to fundamentally restructure american agriculture to adjust to this, and certain crops that people are used to now would be lost to us. 

Additionally, much rare earth mineral mining occurs outside the united states, and such mining is crucial to maintaining american technological productions and ways of life. Technology wouldn’t go away but getting a new phone every year or so probably would. Consumer culture like that would be destroyed and people in the US would absolutely not enjoy that loss on the whole. We would need to massively transition energy and transportation infrastructure away from oil due to loss of participation in imperialist OPEC politics with the Saudis, we would lose access to many of the things that make car cultures in cities run, and would have to create alternatives built around public transit and localized access to goods to minimize the need for transit. 

We would lose access to cheaply manufactured goods from the third world and would instead have to switch to reindustrailization of the american economy and many who work middle class white collar jobs now would have to switch to manufacturing or agricultural work to make up for this. 

Socialism would be a total transformation of American society and lifestyle and would require the American populace to massively transform itself into a totally different type of economy with corespondent changes in lifestyle. Its still the only path forward to us and the only option for a just future, but lets not sugar coat it or pretend that the lives we live in the west are not built on the very sorts of exploitation that us communists seek to abolish. 

I’m not a communist, but this is part of a general trend I see a lot on the left in general these days, which is a strange belief in the virtues of the systems they want to destroy.

Imperialism and Capitalism give us comfortable lifestyles. The Patriarchy protects and nurtures men. White Privilege enriches and aids white people.

Again and again, I see people on the left saying that the destruction of these structures will not be emancipatory, but will make the lives of the “beneficiaries” of those systems much worse. When capitalism goes away, our lives will be noticably worse off and lacking in many of the things that bring us joy. When patriarchy goes away, men in general will find their options more constrained then they used to be.

Look, why are so many people right now so eager to sell the things they hate? If a person is already feeling precarious in their life, and you go up to them and say, “Actually imperialism and capitalism are the main things that protect and provide for you” what on Earth would you expect them to do except become more committed to those ideologies?

Can we really not come up with a sales pitch at all?

People should care about the lives of people being destroyed all around the world so that they can live in such vast wealth. That’s all it really comes down to.
