These Barbie movies were my childhood. And you know what? They were really nice stories to watch. And the characters were all diverse and complex and were good role models for both girls and boys. So here’s a shoutout to them.

Clara from The Nutcracker: sentimental, clever, romantic heroine, playful, caring. She likes ballet and adventures, has maternal instincts, and always provides comfort and support. Even if she’s sometimes nervous and hesitant, she’s not afraid to act to help and protect those who are in trouble.

Erika from Princess and the Pauper: hard-working, funny, strong, responsible, honest. She mantains a positive attitude through the hardships of life and never gives up, loves singing and uses it as a coping mechanism, is set on making her dreams come true. She immediately symphatizes with Anneliese and bravely pretends to be the princess even though it will send her to prison if discovered. She decides not to settle down and goes on to travel the world, becoming a professional singer and only after she’s fully content and satisfyed she comes back to Dominick.

Anneliese from Princess and the Pauper: calm, dutiful, studious, nice, resourceful. She loves learning new things and really likes science, never shrinks her duties and is willing to put aside her own happiness for the well-being of her people. She is kind and friendly to those below her station and helps them, more than once she gets out of trouble thanks to her quick-thinking.

Odette from Swan Lake: altruistic, shy, brave, light-hearted, kind. She likes to dance and help her father in the bakery, she cares a lot about her friends and family. She starts as very shy and insecure, but grows more confident in herself and her abilities. Eventually, she understands that one’s strenght comes from within, and that love is true and powerful if it’s selfless and disinterested.

Annika from The Magic of Pegasus: sporty, optimistic, action girl, tender, spunky. She likes skating and is a bit of a rebel and impulsive, but becomes more thoughtful and understanding in the end. She fiercely stands up to the villain and takes matters into her own hands, never giving up and doing everything she can to save her parents and kingdom. She’s very attached to her sister and matures a lot during the movie.

Brietta from The Magic of Pegasus: sweet, timid, considerate, quiet, serene. She’s pessimistic in the beginning, but learns to always have hope and to trust more in herself. She’s very good with children, loves her family dearly and develops a really nice friendship with Aidan. She’s very helpful and shows bravery when in her Pegasus form, is not so active when changed back but still lends support and encouragment to Annika.

Elina from Fairytopia and Mermaidia: sunny, loving, determined, friendly, go-ahead. Elina is an outsider, but despite not fitting in she doesn’t lose her cheerfulness. She can take care of her own and is able to save the day exactly because she has no wings. She turns her liability into her greatest strenght. She’s ready to help others, but also so doubtful of her self-worth. Still, she goes on despite all odds and proves to be resiliant and strong; she gets her wings as a reward, but ultimately understands that it’s not them that makes her special, but her inner qualities.

Nori from Mermaidia: daring, supportive, competitive, headstrong, fiery. She starts off as a negative character who’s jealous of Elina and wants to prove she can save Nalu alone, but soon they become friends, and Nori realizes that she was unjustly rude to her. She’s the one who encourages Elina when she thinks she won’t get her wings back. She’s also very shy and insecure in her romantic feelings, thinking Nalu won’t ever love her back because of her status and because he actually loves Elina, but she’s proven wrong. She shows to be very bold when facing difficult situations.

Rapunzel from Rapunzel: hopeful, affectionate, creative, soft, curious. She has a big imagination and loves painting, never lets her step-mother’s abuse bring her down, longs for freedom. Her biggest strenghts are her kind heart and gentle demenour, she’s very caring towards her friends, is willing to forgive even those who treated her wrong and is not resentful, appreciates small gestures of love and the wonders of life.

Eric from The Nutcracker: noble, fierce, sensible, funny, self-conscious. He has a gentle humor and faces danger bravely. He feels he’s failed his people in the past so he does all he can to remedy and be a better king, and progressively starts to believe more in himself. He and Clara work as a team and he renounces his kingdom and power to be with her.

Dominick from Princess and the Pauper: romantic, easygoing, understanding, charming, patient. He doesn’t want to marry a complete stranger and actually wishes for true love without pretenses, what he values the most is a good heart. He chooses to believe in Erika even after her lies are revealed, accepts her for who she is and values her, likes her cat even though he’s strange, and supports Erika’s decision to not commit to him but stil makes sure she knows he will always be there waiting for her.

Julian from Princess and the Pauper: intelligent, selfless, gentlemanly, humble, sweet. He is a seeker of knowledge and rised himself from poverty by studying hard until he became the royal tutor of the princess. He knows Anneliese better than anyone, always tries to make her smile, takes her on an inappropriate tour of the village just to cheer her up, is friendly while still aknowledging their boundaries, wants to give her everything but doesn’t think he’s good enough for her.

Aidan from The Magic of Pegasus: quick-witted, supportive, skilled, caring, independent. He made some mistakes in the past and feels ashamed of his behaviour, but faces them and does his best to remedy. Though reluctant at the beginning, he’s there to provide help to Annika and Brietta and warms up to them until he falls in love with Annika with whom he develops a playful banter. He’s learned lots of things having had to take care of himself for some time and is a really good blacksmith.

Nalu from Mermaidia: friendly, loyal, clever, alluring, cheery. Despite being a prince, he’s very laid back and enjoys spending time just chilling with his friends. He respects and admires Elina as a platonic friend, helping her without question, and harbors secrets feelings for Nori, confessing to her in the end. His people’s safety is his first concern and he actually bravely endures captivity to protect them, trying to also trick his kidnappers and gain time.

Daniel from Swan Lake: adventurous, confident, protective, compassionate, bold. He’s a skilled archer, wishes to go explore new places, and once he sets his mind on something he doesn’t pull back. Struggles to please his mother, but doesn’t give up his goals. He’s very enamored with Odette and was charmed by her even in her swan form, wants to protect her despite the danger to himself. He’s fascinated by the Enchanted Forest and all its occupants, and fights Rothbart fearlessly.

Stefan from Rapunzel: big brother af, just, committed, wise, kind. His siblings adore him and he takes time to watch over them and teach them, questions the war that’s being going on for years and actually strives for peace, is not afraid to face off against a powerful mad woman with magic. He helps Rapunzel and is very sweet with her, respects her secrecy without pressuring her, and adopts her extended family of two dragons and one rabbit.
