Sarajevo is the beautiful capital of Bosnia and hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. It was heavily damaged during the Bosnian War, when it suffered the longest siege of any capital city in the history of modern warfare. Today, war cemeteries pepper the city and landmines remain buried in the surrounding hills...

Medieval Ottoman town of Berat, Albania. Located in the hills of south-central Albania, Berat’s historic center is one of the best-preserved medieval Ottoman towns in the world and is inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list.

The old town is perched on steep slopes just below the Berat Castle and preserves old Eastern Orthodox Christian churches, Islamic mosques, medieval Ottoman architecture, and winding cobblestone footpaths. The city is nicknamed the “Town of a Thousand Windows” due to the traditional large windows peering out from homes stacked up the side of the mountain.

The Kuang Si waterfalls are in the jungle 40 minutes southwest of Luang Prabang. These travertine falls flow from mineral springs, depositing limestone along the way to form beautiful terraces and turquoise swimming pools...

Mostar’s narrow, cobbled streets and winding pedestrian pathways couple with its historic architecture to create fantastic viewing perspectives at all scales. The town and bridge were heavily damaged during the Bosnian War, but have since been carefully restored and rebuilt.

Hong Kong is a remarkable place. It is the 4th-densest sovereign state or self-governing territory in the world (in 1st place is its neighbor across the delta: Macau). Yet this density is fantastically constrained by the mountains and the sea into narrow, snaking corridors of high-rises wherever the terrain permits. At no time is this unique urban development better seen than at night, when Hong Kong lights up like a carnival.
