theres too many pokemon games where you play as a kid whos full of life and full of potential. there needs to be a pokemon game where you play as a college dropout who lives in a shitty apartment

your starter pokemon are trubbish, rattata and glameow. which symbolise the trash you keep forgetting to take out, the rats living in your walls and the stray cat you keep trying to befriend but it keeps hissing at you.

you guys dont get it its not supposed to be dark and edgy its supposed to be living in a mundane setting and slowly rediscovering the wonder in the world by going on a journey with a magical trash bag that is your friend, its about love and recovery and coping with the stress of your adult life with your friend who is made of sentient garbage

I’ve never been so attached to literal trash before

I am similarly attached to the sentient trash. Can't wait to take him on little adventures

The Armorer: In order to master the ways of the Force, Jedi must forgo all attachment.
Din Djarin: That is the opposite of our Creed. Loyalty and solidarity are the way.
The Armorer: I know, but it is the way of the Jedi to completely suck ass.

Y'know, despite its numerous and well-known flaws, I still enjoy League of Legends. I enjoy the world of Runeterra, I enjoy the characters, I enjoy the short little cinematics and comics. And I’m excited to check out the new cartoon. There’s a lot of great stuff, even beyond the gameplay - which I was never very good at - and I’m glad to’ve found out that some of my friends also still have a soft spot for it. But we also need to acknowledge those flaws. And I doubt anyone needs to be reminded of how infamously homogenous the female champion designs are. There’s few I would describe as bad, but when you put them all together, they start to run together. A lot. There’s outliers here and there - Jinx is a refreshingly weird-looking goblin-woman, Illaoi is a brick wall, Kallista’s got a nice haggardly quality, Talyah’s rocking the “I’m trans, even if I’m not allowed to say it out loud” fashion. And we have a couple monsters like Anivia and Rek'sai - though I’m disappointed that Rek doesn’t get to talk like the other void monsters. Outliers, but there’s several hundred champions, and MOST of the girls are copypasted from the same body type. That’s a problem that’s STILL persisting today. This in mind, I decided it was time to try my hand at redesigning one of my old mains. Zyra was always pretty cool - a plant monster wearing the shape of a human. She had a creepy, mutated, very biological quality to her older look, which I always tried to emphasize with my fanart. And that used to be enough for me. But as the roster expands ever onward, and there are two steps back for every one step forward, her subtle horror elements just felt less and less satisfying. You Google “Zyra” right now and most of the images you’ll find are less “creepy plant monster woman” and more “Lady with leaves over her naughty bits.” But you know, when you redesign something you like, you want to stick as close to it as you can. As much as I’d love to go full Biollante here, I want to make something that still feels like Zyra. The petal ears, the flower-like hair, the segmented body parts, and those adorable spiked arm-vines are essentials. She’s got pointed shapes extending from her shoulders and hips, which are important aspects of her silhouette, so we’ll keep those. Plants have a lot of flowy bits, so let’s give her some stuff to dramatically trail in the wind - nothing too restricting though. She’s a pretty mobile character. The leaf-loincloth gives her a nice “evil sorceress” vibe. But she needs a little more bite, so let’s just turn those shoulder leaves into a full on flytrap-shawl. And plants don’t eat the same way we do, so does she really need a mouth? The lack of a mouth helped set me on the path to getting it where I wanted. Her proportions don’t need to be human because she’s not a human, nor is she piloting one. She’s a mimic, and like most mimics, the illusion is imperfect. And also because I like long, gangly monster limbs. I went out of my way not to give her breasts, because if I hear one more “her chest is too flat, she looks like a man” comment, I’m going to start biting fingers off. Overall, she’s not QUITE as monstrous as the likes of Cho'Gath or Maokai, but I think we’ve managed to steer her well out of the cookie-cutter, while retaining her essential Zyra-ness. Not sure if I’ll do anymore of these, but it’d certainly be a fun side-project. Gods know I have strong opinions about Elise. And prettymuch EVERYONE agrees Kai'sa is a train wreck, whose whole deal seems like it’d be right up my alley.

Better.

I realized I needed (or at least wanted) a large pool of students for Wizard School Mysteries to draw upon - people to namedrop in crowd scenes, red herrings for mysteries, etc.  And while I already had quite a few wizard students planned for important roles in the story, it wasn’t enough.  Not nearly enough.

So I got a few of my friends to help me by pitching character ideas, and, well, I think I’ve got a good crop of weirdos to work with.

Each of the individual rows up there is a separate picture, which if you open up should allow you to see these guys is pretty good detail (if Tumblr doesn’t do some fucky resizing).  But if you’d like to se them all in one pic:

I LOVE the way the Monsterverse handles the Titans, in that it takes a sort of unspoken implication of previous kaiju verses - That if every other kaiju is a relic from prehistoric times, then surely there must have been a colossal ecosystem of giants way back when.

Of course, Godzilla and the MUTOs are given a fairly specific date, being established as hailing from the Permian. Which is well enough - it was the dawn of the dinosaurs, as well as being host to an enormous extinction event that could’ve wiped away any number of life forms we don’t know about. And that same extinction event could explain their nature as beings who feed partially on natural radiation.

But with King of the Monsters and the Kong series now a part of it, this naturally raises questions: How did the others get here? If Rodan really is a relative of pteranodon, then he’d be pretty damn late to the party, compared to Godzilla. Even the earliest pterosaurs would’ve come after the fact. And what about Behemoth? Whether he’s a pachyderm, a sloth, a primate or something else, he’s clearly a mammal. Mammals didn’t exactly hit their stride until a ways after Godzilla.

And then you have Kong. I could buy that Legendary Rodan is a relative of Godzilla who just happens to resemble a pterosaur. I could buy that Behemoth is a mammal-like reptile that just happens to be covered in fur. I could buy that any other of the titans belong to their own families, and just superficially resemble certain animals. But Kong is DEFINITELY a primate. Aint no getting around that.

So this isn’t one ecosystem. This is something that had to have been going on across countless geological periods. The older titans would have had to have literally witnessed the evolution of the younger ones. So how does that work?

And then it hit me. The Titans are natural organisms, but they’re also keystone species - more than keystone species. They literally exist as guardians and keepers of nature. We see this during the end credits, where each titan causes nature to restore itself in some way, causing forests to regrow, species to come back from the brink, just encouraging life wherever they go.

The big four kaiju of KotM are all equal parts animal and elemental, but the reason for this is not JUST to remind us that they are physical gods. Each of the titans consumes natural energy in some form - Geothermal, lightning, light, radiation, even the more “mundane” ones are clearly powerhouses.

Each of the titans consumes natural energy and converts it into a form that can sustain life - their lives, but also the lives of creatures around them. They emit radiation that may be deadly in high concentrations, but which stimulates growth. Their footprints, their leavings, the simple remnants of their battlefields all carry this life-giving energy. In essence, they take real radiation and convert it into comic book radiation.

And that has a profound effect on their environments. The existence of Godzilla spreads this energy around, stimulating the growth of the natural world, and by extension, stimulating evolution. With a surplus of energy going around, creatures can afford to consume more and grow larger. And as their environment changes around them, they gain the ability to likewise convert natural energies into life-sustaining energies. One titan encourages the evolution of more.

There’s not one single age where the titans ruled. Titans are a natural product of this world’s biosphere, and they help to sustain that biosphere throughout all of history. They’re gods not simply because they’re obscenely powerful, but because they are the guardians and in some ways, the creators of life.

And that’s what the Monsterverse does. It explains things, it catalogues them, breaks down the mechanisms through which they do what they do, gives them scientific names and tries to understand them. And the more we learn about them, the more clear it becomes that just because we CAN sort-of understand how they work, just because they are naturalborn products of Earth, just because they are the product of evolution, doesn’t mean that they’re not still gods.

The Monsterverse doesn’t shame science for wanting to know more. It doesn’t try to tell us not to think about it, or to blindly accept anything. It shows us, through our science, how much we still don’t know. It shows us how vast and magnificent the universe is, even with all we do know.

And that’s a sort of wonder I’ve long missed in monster movies.

There are some posts on my old account that I don’t want to lose.

Slasher Villain... vs. a Tiger

I had a weird dream that a slasher villain faced off against a tiger… and the tiger WON. The tiger just straight up mauled the dude.

Maybe for Halloween, I can work something for this for halloween!

Like… Imagine the stereotypical horror protagonists lead the slasher villain into a zoo. The slasher villain has them cornered into a enclosure… Only for the tiger to LEAP from its enclosure…

And put the primal terror of an Apex predator whose kind has survived for MILLIONS of years onto some filthy humanoid with a knife.

Cue the tiger curbstomping the slasher villain.

Final Wizard School Mysteries sketch batch: hypothetical hocuses

So, somewhat unintentionally, I ended up giving a few of my wizards hats that look kind of alive.  Which is because, you know, I like to draw monsters, and making someone’s hat look like a little monster makes me more inclined to draw their hat.  But after a point I should probably DO something with all these monster hats, right?  Maybe wizard hats just naturally spring to life after a slow metamorphosis, growing longer and stranger until they take on a mind of their own.  Of course, if that was a common phenomena in my setting, it’d need a name…

So then I remembered the trend of Halloween decorations that are basically witch/wizard hats with legs, which Bogleech dubbed “Hocuses,” and well, you know how I like the idea of canonizing new monster archetypes with names.  Which is why I ended up including a Hocus among Ivan’s planned homunculi.

But what of those other wizard hats?  Are they gonna sprout legs at some point?  I dunno, we’ll have to see.  But it’s fun to speculate, so why not sketch what they might look like when they finish their evolution?

So first is James Chaucer’s hypothetical hocus, Canterbri.

Then we have Geoffrey Travers’s, Walter.

Then Dean Gernderf Dermberder’s hocus, Merdern.

Finally, a hocus from a non-Wizard School Mysteries character who nonetheless belongs to the greater Midgaheim setting AND has a weird hat, Vormadon the Dread’s hocus, Ayagg.

Alternately, a "griffmouse." This friendly little chimeric creature has titmouse and chipmunk features. Feed them sunflower seeds or juniper berries and they'll be your friend for life!

Reblogging for the morning. I also just want to add that I'm proud of the progress I've made with my digital work in the past year (this was painted in Clip Studio). I feel like I'm not only capable of reaching the same 'look' my traditional gouache illustrations have had, but also that I'm even able to push and expand that style in ways I couldn't before. Moving to a fully digital workflow has helped me a lot to compensate for my RSIs, and I'm so happy that I've figured that out before it was too late for my hands and wrists.

I’m at that point where I don’t even know how I feel

Or how to express how I feel

It’s like when I went to therapy and they would ask what’s wrong and I’d be like

Dude idk wtf is ever happening I’m just here for some reason

the other day i was perusing the dessert options in the dining hall and this group of absolute stereotypical frat boy types were also milling around the desserts and one of them pointed to the strawberry pastries and said to the others “what’s the vibe with these, boys?” and i haven’t been able to get that sentence out of my head since
