I think it's easy to forget a lot of people aren't necessarily watching TV for high stakes gripping drama with an overarching plot and a commentary on the human condition. They want something where they can put on one of any of thousands of episodes and allow their brain to experience the absolute minimum mental exertion possible for a short while. And that's fine!
