I'm getting so sick of major female characters in historical media being incredibly feisty, outspoken and public defenders of women's rights with little to no realistic repercussions. Yes it feels like pandering, yes it's unrealistic and takes me out of the story, yes the dialogue almost always rings false - but beyond all that I think it does such a disservice to the women who lived during those periods. I'm not embarrassed of the women in history who didn't use every chance they had to Stick It To The Man. I'm not ashamed of women who were resigned to or enjoyed their lot in life. They weren't letting the side down by not having and representing modern gender ideals. It says a lot about how you view average ordinary women if the idea of one of your main characters behaving like one makes them seem lame and uninteresting to you.

Also half the time historical media writers have no fucking clue what the actual attitudes were in the period they’re (professedly) depicting.

For those following the Chinook Indian Nation's work toward regaining federal recognition, this is an important endorsement. I posted a while back about a petition for the state of Washington to give the now-closed Naselle Youth Camp to the Chinook. The NYC is on unceded Chinook land, and specifically the portion of land the Chinook asked to retain almost two centuries ago as part of an unfulfilled treaty with the U.S. government.

A state task force formed to determine the fate of the NYC has officially recommended the NYC be given to the Chinook Indian Nation. Not only would this put the facility into the hands of people who will make excellent use of it, but the Chinook have also stated their intention to restore the on-site wastewater treatment facility and salmon hatchery. The former would additionally be a boon to the entirety of Pacific County, which currently ships its wastewater all the way to Centralia, WA, over 100 miles away from southern portions of the county.

If the NYC is indeed given to the Chinook, this will be an important statement that can be used to pressure the U.S. government to restore their federal recognition. To find out ways you can help the Chinook in this effort, please visit ChinookJustice.org.

I’m afraid that people won’t change their minds, and this will become the default. I’ve seen blatant misinformation, but in 20 years, no one will remember that it was wrong. It’ll be a primary source. It’ll be history.

I’m afraid that I’ll be on the “wrong side of history,” not by being wrong, but because if enough people shout the wrong stuff loud enough, it becomes indistinguishable from the truth.

I’m afraid that in 20 years, Zionist will be an established slur, or that every Jew will have to plead that they’re not a Zionist.

I’m genuinely scared that this is a fight we can’t afford to lose but one that we will lose anyway.

@lostthenfoundmyself I can't prove any of what I'm about to say, but I believe that recent history has enough evidence to at least make this plausible. I don't think what you're afraid of will happen because the vast majority of these people simply aren't capable of such a thing as a long-term commitment to a cause, because that would almost always require something other than raw emotion to be at the core of their decision making. That's why these causes keep taking over society for six months to a year and then vanishing. Remember how demands to defund the police were everywhere? Remember when metoo was everywhere? Hell, remember when Occupy Wall Street was supposed to be the leftist answer to the Tea Party? Where are all those movements now? Dead or nothing but guttering embers, because people found something else to be performatively outraged about. I can't say when or how it'll happen, but it's likely that that'll happen to the anti-Israel movement too.

Absolutely correct! A country that has ethnic minorities in its parliament, its army in integrated units, its courts, is definitely not using an apartheid system, because none of those things could occur within an apartheid system, as they are antithetical to the very idea.
