the fact that newt and hermann canonically exchanged "passionate and fascinating" letters for four years before they met in person. the fact that, upon meeting face to face, they instantly disliked each other, and yet they were so obsessed with each other that they didn't just simply break things off, but actively antagonized each other just to have an excuse to stay in contact. the fact that they saw the kscience department get downsized and budget cut to hell until all that remained were two neurotic men with a literal line of tape dividing their lab. the fact that they began corresponding after the first kaiju attack, and they saw this all the way through to its end together. the fact that all they had was each other. the fact that they were drift compatible.

what’s funniest about the pacific rim scientists is like. when newt geiszler says he’s a scientist he means an old-timey 1910s entomologist wearing khaki shorts and a comically oversized pair of binoculars traipsing through the jungle capturing endangered species of butterfly and murmuring “egads!! fascinating…..” and scribbling it in his journal. when hermann gottlieb is being a scientist it’s literally the fucking manhattan project. tortured chainsmoking physicist. pawn of a war. repressed homosexual all his life. gets executed for being a communist. And they have to do each other’s peer review

for the record, disabled people don't have to automatically know their limits. we are allowed to push ourselves and learn our limitations. what is not allowed is able bodied or even other disabled people who think they know us tell us that we have to keep going. my disability and body are not science projects for anyone to play with.
