“My life started the day I found you in the woods.” Mike’s speech has always confused the shit out of me. A lot of fellow byler shippers disregard the speech as being disingenuous or that Mike was lying for the sake of saving El in that moment but it never read that way to me.

I’ve always kind of just ignored the speech as a whole because I couldn’t figure it out. To me, it felt like what he was saying was real but it wasn’t coming off in the correct way.

However, I realized something about El recently that made the speech make SO much more sense. El is the physical manifestation of hope. El made everyone believe it was possible to find Will, El stood up to the bullies, El is the only reason Mike didn’t kill himself when jumping off the cliff, she gave Hopper hope for the first time since losing his daughter. El is hope.

If El is hope then that means Mike is talking about hope in his speech. “My life started the day I found you in the woods” isn’t a fuck you to Will. It’s not negating the fact that that was the day he went missing. It was the first time Mike had any hope after one of the most hopeless days of his life. El didn’t just give hope that he could find Will but also, that he could DO something, that when Will came back it would be different, no more bullying, no more shitty dads/family, Will and Mike would be safe because Mike now had someone powerful on his side.

His life started that day because for the first time he thought maybe he wouldn’t have to worry about his friends life. The speech isn’t about who El is, the speech is about what El means to him.

all queer history on here is just US-American or maybe sometimes some UK history as well and it makes me sad that there’s so little information about other countries’ queer history on here :(

@makingqueerhistory has some diversity, as of historical queer people, and they’re doing a great job, but there’s a lot of work ahead.

OP is definitely right, there still is a huge gap in the discussions of queer history, and thank you for recommending us!

This isn’t perfect, and many of these only have one article, but here is our list of countries we have written about. We are hoping to one day have at least one article for every country in the world but as @every-book-has-a-secret there is a lot of work still to do.

Europe

Africa

North America

South America

Asia

Oceania

Antarctica

I’d like to add Tom Of Finland (Touko Valio Laaksonen), the one who drew those erotic pictures of muscular men clad in leather, to the Finnish list.

Some say that Tom Of Finland was the father for the leather gay movement.

PERUVIAN QUEER HISTORY???? God, I love this site

[ID: The Chris Fleming “was anybody going to tell me” meme. A person standing in front of a brick wall speaks, with the captions edited to read, “Okay, was anybody going to tell me that my country has queer history I would’ve adored to know before, or was I just supposed to learn it from a wholesome Tumblr post myself?”]

@queerasfact is a pretty cool blog and podcast dedicated to international queer history!

Thanks for tagging us! We’ve got a list here of all our episodes sorted by country. There’s definitely a lot we haven’t covered, but if you’re looking for a specific area, you can check it out.
