Tumblr’s Core Product Strategy

Here at Tumblr, we’ve been working hard on reorganizing how we work in a bid to gain more users. A larger user base means a more sustainable company, and means we get to stick around and do this thing with you all a bit longer. What follows is the strategy we're using to accomplish the goal of user growth. The @labs group has published a bit already, but this is bigger. We’re publishing it publicly for the first time, in an effort to work more transparently with all of you in the Tumblr community. This strategy provides guidance amid limited resources, allowing our teams to focus on specific key areas to ensure Tumblr’s future.

The Diagnosis

In order for Tumblr to grow, we need to fix the core experience that makes Tumblr a useful place for users. The underlying problem is that Tumblr is not easy to use. Historically, we have expected users to curate their feeds and lean into curating their experience. But this expectation introduces friction to the user experience and only serves a small portion of our audience. 

Tumblr’s competitive advantage lies in its unique content and vibrant communities. As the forerunner of internet culture, Tumblr encompasses a wide range of interests, such as entertainment, art, gaming, fandom, fashion, and music. People come to Tumblr to immerse themselves in this culture, making it essential for us to ensure a seamless connection between people and content. 

To guarantee Tumblr’s continued success, we’ve got to prioritize fostering that seamless connection between people and content. This involves attracting and retaining new users and creators, nurturing their growth, and encouraging frequent engagement with the platform.

Our Guiding Principles

To enhance Tumblr’s usability, we must address these core guiding principles.

IT'S MOCKING ME

the tumblr emporium ads get on my nerves so fucking bad because they're just regular fucking 'this company is a person' ads but the person the ads are trying to be is a major dweeb who steals memes because they're free to use "tumblr lore" and not an individual user's joke and like wants to beat the crabs meme to death like it isn't almost exclusively used when a person in power dies or falls into misfortune. now it's just completely devoid of context. crabs because their market research shows tumblr users mention crabs a lot. crabs and blorbos and the pedro pascal fandom and vanilla extract water bottles. yes, we have done the research. we know how to sell your niche fun back to you. and the gullible portions of this user base are like "lol tumblr is so quirky" rather than like feeling like the merch account needs to be seen as a huge mistake yesterday

they’re also trying to sell “horse plinko” merch and the person who made that meme is like not well off and was trying to fundraiser not too long ago iirc and I mean. Obviously they’re not getting any of that money

the guy running that account is already blocking ppl who get too loud about this, so i have great faith in our ability to run them the fuck out of here and back to whatever bog they crawled out of

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
