ai (left) at the moment at least, really hates rendering fur well. either a tiny bit is in focus and the rest is completely blurred, all of it kind of ambiguously fluffy yet smooth looking, or each hair looks meticulously engraved on with the burn tool. one thing it’s really bad at is separating areas of different hair growth and hair tracts in a natural way.
hair doesn’t grow randomly on mammals, different patches grow in specific directions. ai really can’t strike a balance of following this flow and either doesn’t follow these hair paths and blurs/smudges it out(usually in cuter stylized images) or follows them way too harshly without any stray hairs deviating or natural debris anywhere (real wild animals aren’t spotless 27/4)
hairs often come out too uniform and lacking any natural imperfection.
it’s hard to explain if you don’t have the eye for it but real photos just have more nuance to them, everything feels more grounded and less floaty, and also the eyes usually aren’t super shiny. real wildlife photography doesn’t often get these super shots with such crisp foreground/background separation and when they do it still feels different and much less ambiguously smooth.
in real photos you can get lost in the details and gain more information or context the longer you observe them, cheap ai stuff is meant to be superficially consumed, and the more you look at the details the less it makes sense instead
