"Straight couples shouldn't be at pride"
Well uh…
1.) one or both of people you see as a “straight couple” could be pan/bi/poly/ace
2.) one or both of them could be trans or non binary
3.) you could be misgendering someone
4.) They could be there to give moral support to a queer friend or family member who didn’t want to go alone.
Number four is important
5. They could be there because they support the cause stop fucking gatekeeping
6. They could be there in memory of a loved one, don’t forget Pride used to be a memorial as well as a celebration. I know a good number of straight people who go to Pride to celebrate the lives of friends and family who have died because they want to remember them as they lived, happy and joyful and surrounded by a community that loved them.
ALL OF THE FUCKING ABOVE.
7. They could be questioning or closeted about their gender and/or sexuality, or not ready to question their gender and/or sexuality, but still want to attend pride, either to experience being around people like themselves or to ‘test the waters’ in an open event that doesn’t have the loaded weight of walking into an explicitly queer space like a club, social group or community centre. These people might be closeted or questioning forever, or attending pride as a ‘passing straight’ person might be their first step into a deeper community engagement.
8. Open events are so important for this segment of our community for reasons of safety, too. People who CANNOT be open in their personal life can watch a parade or go to a park event without it being as implicitly indicative of their identity. Very important for vulnerable people (teens, disabled people, etc.) who are dependent on carers who might be unaccepting of their gender or sexuality.
So here in Singapore, gay sex is still technically illegal. Even if it’s not enforced, it means that no out person will ever hold public office, not while the law is still in place. It also means we can’t even BEGIN to talk about same-gender marriage.
We have the absolute tamest of tame possible equivalent of Pride. We call it Pink Dot. What it is is basically a giant picnic. People show up dressed in pink and occasionally, bring their dogs and a blanket and some food. There are live performances, again, very tame; just some hip-hop items, a bit of singing, some cultural performances too. There are a bunch of speeches about how we should get to love whomever we love. And then at some point, everyone gathers together to form a huge human Pink Dot.
The first was in 2009. It’s grown significantly since then. Recent years have been setting records for attendance. Of course, backlash from the conservative population in Singapore increased proportionally.
So then you know what they did this year? First the government banned foreign sponsors. Big names like Google and Barclays and JP Morgan, which had been providing valuable support and funding, were no longer allowed to. Lucky for us, Singaporean companies have signed up in force. But it wasn’t over: the announcement came just last month, non-citizens/permanent residents wouldn’t even be allowed to attend. Shortly after that came the announcement that this would be enforced with barricades and ID checks. For a fucking giant picnic.
So can you see why I appreciated it so much that my very straight former boss contacted me last week to say she and her family were planning on attending to show support, but did they have to wear pink because they don’t own any articles or pink clothing?
I want the straight couples at our Pride. I want as many of them there as possible. I desperately wish the entire population of straight citizens/PRs in Singapore would willingly turn up in pink so that we know that we are accepted and supported, and so that we know that we are finally fucking getting somewhere with this fucking society. So that we know that we are not alone damn it.
HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Echoes is another short horror/thriller film I’d recommend. It is well done and very creative. It gave me the chills. It’s about a woman who begins to see odd things concerning herself throughout the day.
You can watch it here

“I think of filmmaking as a form of communication. Maybe it’s also an art, but that’s for somebody else to decide.”
On his birthday, here is the mighty cinematographer Roger Deakins and nine of his most astonishing shots from Sid and Nancy (1986), Fargo (1996), No Country for Old Men (2007), A Serious Man (2010), Skyfall (2012), Prisoners (2013), Sicario (2015), Hail, Caesar! (2016), and Blade Runner 2049 (2017).

“It’s easy as an actor to live in a world of fiction where people talk about wearing masks, creating a character to escape what is their real life. I don’t feel that way. I feel like there’s an opportunity to head into real life and have it beat you up a bit so you can come in to the fictional world and hand whoever you’re with — be it your director or the other actors — the reality of the situation. And that’s just where my approach has changed. I’ve just upped the stakes.”
