for context, the "archy" the poem is attributed to is the focus of Marquis' "Archy and Mehitabel" columns, illustrated by George Herriman of Krazy Kat fame. archy is a former poet who wrote stories and poems with an old typewriter in an abandoned office when no one was around.
he's a cockroach, which is why he writes in secret and also why everything he writes is in lowercase. He has to step on each key individually, meaning he can't use the shift key. the picture above is not canon. he's normally cockroach sized. his poems reflect this, being typically about his conversations with bugs and relationships with much larger animals, like the alley cat deuteragonist Mehitabel. the columns inspired a musical called Shinbone Alley, starring Eartha Kitt and with writing by Mel Brooks. in 1971, an animated film, itself inspired by and named after the Shinbone Alley musical, was released. it bombed commercially but it's beautiful in terms of writing and visuals. anyway, it has it's own version of the lesson of the moth. you can find it here.
