Animal Variations

@fyanimaldiversity / fyanimaldiversity.tumblr.com

Appreciating the subtle and not so subtle physical variations between individuals, subspecies, morphs, and breeds of animals. I'm not an expert, just a person who likes to look through the internet to find interesting looking animals for myself and others. Feel free to point out any mistakes!

have you seen any of the grey transient killer whales off the west coast of north america? they’re beautiful! researchers aren’t exactly sure what causes the coloration. it’s hypothesized that chediak-higashi syndrome may be to blame, as it was documented in a captive individual from a related population. beautiful animals though, so far, none of the wild grey calves have survived to adulthood

Sorry for the late response, but wow! Absolutely stunning, I love faded black animals, they look like went through the wash too many times. So sad they have health issues!

Hi!! Just stumbled on this blog and it’s so fun to scroll through!! Animal genetics are just fascinating haha

I actually raise New Zealand rabbits, specifically the ruby eyed white variation, aka albino. I adore their funky red eyes even though plenty find them scary. I do work in my community with them, and it’s very fun when small children (or even adults!) ask me why their eyes are red. I always love telling them that it’s because they’re albino, and then they get so excited because most people have never seen an animal with albinism before!

And of course, rabbit tax for the ask <3

Hi, thank you! Awww, that’s awesome! I think I was told by someone that a certain kind of rabbit that looks albino actually isn’t? Is that true? Like it was white with red eyes so I assumed albino!

I love rabbits so much, but I’m allergic to what they eat :c.

Basic tapir guide for artists

April 27th is the World Tapir Day! To celebrate, I made some charts with useful data and references for artists. I hope it helps you to design tapir characters, and to draw, paint and appreciate these wonderful creatures. Feel free to reblog too! This is the main basic chart, but I made also charts for each species, featuring some color variations and mutations too! You can find them for free at my Ko-fi - and, well, you can pay me a coffee there if you like them. Enjoy! ID: A chart about tapirs named “Basic Tapir Guide for artists - by Ground Pear 2023”. Label: “Family Tapiridae, Order Perissodactyla” - it is showing too frames with cartoonish portraits of a horse and a rhino as closest living relatives. It shows, in lines: 1- A starry tapir skull labeled “full of thoughts 24/7, very smart” and the head of a tapir yawning labeled “Dental formula 3/3 1/1 4/3-4 3/3 = 42-44”; 2- an adult lowland tapir with details for the hands with four fingers and feet with three toes, labeled “tiny cute tail, oval ears with white tip, short trunk”, and a baby tapir labeled “babies look like watermelons”; 3- tapir species comparisons: the black and white Malayan tapir, the dark brown Baird’s tapir, the grey and maned lowland tapir, and the fuzzy mountain tapir. Offwhite background. End ID. 🌟 2023 carrd | commissions | ☕️ Ko-fi 🌟

2 month vs 9 months freshly peeled angel! He is a bit stunted unfortunately, but finally darkening up now. Go increasing melanin gene go! One step closer to a fully toasted boy!

@is-the-snake-video-cute I noticed color change before the shed happened, I was under the impression the scales darkening literally when shed?

Oooh look at him! What a handsome young man!

Color changes with IMG boas are really noticeable after sheds because the fresh skin makes the difference so obvious, but you'll also notice some darkening between sheds! The chance happens gradually, not just with sheds, the sheds just make it more obvious!

This snake morph guide is just meant to explain some basics of morphs. I would caution anyone in buying a pet that takes a high level of care just because it's pretty, and frankly any breeder that continues to breed morphs with physiological and neurological defects should be put out of business. I did my best as I find this interesting and believe there's a lot of misinformation out there due to people trying to literally sell things to their audience.

I included some links if you would like additional reading. They range from a study on captive care management, studies I could find relevant to the severe issue morphs, and some general on snake color and scales.

I just learned about this INCREDIBLY blessed/cursed 5-legged cat @leggylu on Instagram (and I guess Tiktok) - have you ever seen anything like this??? when I still worked in a shelter I did an intake for a “5-legged” dog, but his issue was basically that his radius & ulna didn’t fuse and his front leg just kinda split in half with 1-2 paw pads & claws on each end. but this cat has a whole ass third back leg and I’m losing my mind.

Avatar

.... he actually has 6 legs! The limbs fused at the ... Tarsus? carpus?... I don't have my glasses on and I'm on my phone so I can't quite determine which limb type is duplicating, but there's 2 distinct upper limb bones, a full set of lower limb bones plus another main lower limb bone, and then whatever is going on past that distal joint.

That spine is also having a bit of an adventure as well.

Fucking fascinating!!!
