Do you think it's hypocritical for unions (healthcare unions in particular) that pushed for their members to get early access to vaccines to now be against mandatory vaccinations for their workers?

Yeah but I haven’t seen unions pushing back against this (but maybe I just haven’t seen it lately).

It appears that there's at least one union pushing back against mandatory vaccinations for their workers, the BC Nurses Union

If 85 percent of the country was vaccinated against covid 19, Canada that is, would that be enough for her immunity? I wonder what percentage would be enough for that.

It might have been if the new variants weren't so contagious, but now it isn't good enough.

I'm hearing that we probably need 90% or more now:

It also should be noted that over 10% of Canada’s population cannot get vaccinated at this point due to being under the age of 12. With the earliest estimates of vaccine approval for that age group being around mid/late fall (and allowing that roughly 10% of adults here are hardcore, unpersuadable anti-vaxers) Canada will likely not hit that 90% population vaccination threshold until late 2021/early 2022. This does not not necessarily mean that we will have high levels of death/hospitalizations or we will have to live with COVID-related restrictions until then (or for that matter, that vaccinations are the only thing we can do to bring down infection rates); it’s not like as soon as we hit 70/80/90% vaccination things will magically go back to ‘normal’. Just that the percentage of people we need to vaccinate that in uncontrolled scenarios every 1 person who gets infected leads to less than 1 more subsequent infection is unlikely to be hit due to reasons beyond our control.

Far to many people think that federal and provincial parties are connected, how do we combat this?

I guess by explaining the distinction, like I did last night?

Its tedious, but clearing up misconceptions is helpful in the long run if you have the patience for it.

I do think it’s worth noting that while this generally applies to provinces with a Liberal and (Progressive) Conservative parties (e.g. Ontario), provincial NDP parties are integrated with the federal NDP. While they of course generally run themselves and Jagmeet/the federal executive does not directly make decisions for the provincial NDP parties, joining a provincial branch of the NDP also makes you a member of the federal party.

The exceptions to this are Quebec (the old QNDP severed ties with the federal party in 1989 because the former adopted a pro-Quebec sovereignty stance which is against the federal NDP’s pro-federalism stance) and the Nunavut/Northwest Territories (which have non-partisan legislatures).

So John Horgan has been pretty much MIA for about a month now: no press conferences, media availability, nothing. Even if we were in "normal" times, this would be a bad look, no?

Honestly, the BC NDP government has basically been on autopilot ever since they won a majority in the last provincial election. Aside from a select few MLAs (Bowinn Ma in particular), they seem to have lost all interest in, well, actually governing and seem content to just passively react to everything from COVID, to the wildfires, etc.

Anonymous asked:

Do you know if I would need to quarantine (either at my residence or at a hotel) if I am returning from the UK? I will be travelling to and from there near the end of the month (funeral), but I can't seem to find specific information for the UK. I am fully vaccinated if that matters as well

According to this CBC News article, fully vaccinated Canadians are exempt from the 14 day quarantine and mandatory hotel stay if your second dose was at least two weeks prior to the day you’d (re)enter Canada. All other travel requirements (pre-travel negative COVID test, proof of vaccination, quarantine plan in the event you do have to enter one for another reason, etc.) still apply

Anonymous asked:

What do you think of Andrea Horwath coming out against mandatory vaccinations for education workers? Based on the backlash it seems like a completely avoidable own goal 😕

Don’t agree with her stance.

We already require vaccinations for international travel, to attend school for children, etc.

I don’t think there’s any major charter infringements here, especially in a pandemic where the number one goal should be public health.

This also isn’t the public, it’s only those having direct contact with a lot of people who can’t easily be vaccinated (teachers) or those that deal with a lot of potential covid patients (Healthcare workers).

Considering it was in part a response to Steven Del Duca (Ontario Liberal Party leader) coming out in favour of mandatory vaccines for those workers, I have to think it was a misguided attempt at distinguishing the ONDP from the Ontario Liberals  That being said, I have noticed many high-profile NDP figures (such as sitting MPs) directly criticizing Horwath for those comments, while remaining largely silent on John Horgan, who a) effectively has the same stance as of now regarding vaccine mandates for most professions (and is fortunate that the main opposition party here in BC, the BC Liberals, almost certainly also oppose mandatory vaccinations) and b) is an actual sitting premier with the power to enact vaccine mandates tl;dr: Horwath’s stance is bad, but it also feels like there’s a double standard when it comes to her and John Horgan in BC on vaccine mandates

It's going to get broken again on wednesday, Kelowna is expected to hit at least 46°

To put this into context for, Lytton today was only 1 degree Fahrenheit (roughly 0.5-0.6 degrees Celsius) “cooler” than the hottest temperature ever recorded in Las Vegas

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced three new Senate appointments today — a former national union leader, the current mayor of Cornwall, Ont. and the CEO of Port Saint John — as he chips away at the 15 vacancies that have piled up in the Red Chamber over the past two years.
With these new picks, Trudeau has now installed 55 senators in the upper house — an unusually large number of appointments for a single prime minister.
More than half of all sitting senators were appointed by Trudeau. Former prime minister Stephen Harper let vacancies in the place pile up as the 2013-15 expenses scandal raged on, leaving Trudeau with more opportunities to appoint senators friendly to his push for an independent Senate.
Hassan Yussuff — who, until just last week, was the president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) — will represent Ontario in the Senate.
The Guyana-born labour leader was accused by some within the union movement of being too cozy with the governing Liberals.

So I don’t even know if I should submit this or anything, since I hate conspiracy theories but this coincidence is too close. So yesterday, I got a text message from the Federal Conservative Party of Canada asking me if I will vote conservative in the next election (Y or N). I texted them back telling them that the number listed was a business phone on the NDNCL, so it was illegal to solicit, please remove the number from the list. No response back.

Today, I’ve received 16 robocalls from a scam agency saying that there’s a warrant out for my arrest due to not paying taxes. They started at 8 am. It is now 1:30 pm. All from different numbers. I haven’t received these calls in months, but it’s just curious to me that when I respond to a Federal Conservative text with a non favorable answer, this begins to occur. Has this happened to anyone else?

I don’t think it’s necessarily a conspiracy; the bulk phone lists that scammers buy are almost certainly the same ones ones telemarketers/political parties/etc use to reach customers and voters

Just a reminder the BC Covid19 benefit ($500-1000) is still available

Its available until June 30th, 2021.

I only just applied for it now because I was busy with exams and realized I hadn’t filed my recent income taxes, so couldn’t really do it until very recently.

If you make under about $60,000 or so (and a bit more for a family income), you’re pretty much guaranteed $500. All you need is your SIN, optional drivers license, income tax info and your banking info. Took me about 10 minutes to fill out.

The B.C. Liberal Health critic — Kelowna-Mission MLA Renee Merrifield — is under fire for making dubious claims and suggestions about COVID-19 to the media amid a global pandemic.

Merrifield was quoted in a Kelowna publication touting the benefits of vitamin D, being fit and keeping healthy to "help fight off COVID-19”.

In a recent KelownaNow article she shared to her Facebook page on Saturday, April 24, she suggested such actions actually prevent COVID.

"Preventative measures are huge,” she is quoted in the article. “I take 5,000 international units a day of vitamin D because there's a direct correlation between it boosting your immune system and fighting off COVID."

But, according to an expert in the field, that's not true at all. There is no proof that vitamin D does anything to “fight off” or prevent COVID.

“To date, there are no studies to support these claims,” UBC professor Stephen Hoption Cann wrote in an email to iNFOnews.ca. “It would be wrong for public health officials to state that these changes could prevent COVID when there is no evidence so far that this is true."

If anyone not from BC is wondering why the BC NDP continues to poll relatively well despite their neoliberal turn on many issues and mishandling of the 3rd wave of COVID, it's in no small part due to the post-Christy Clark BC Liberals being one of the most ineffective opposition parties I've seen in a long time

Sorry for asking a non-politics related question, but having registered for vaccination before I realized people my age were supposed to register after a certain date, I was wondering if there would be any complications or if I would have to register again? Thanks in advance!

Wouldn’t they just contact you once you can have your shot soon.

The BC registration works that way.

Avatar

Anyone in BC aged 18 and up could register for a vaccine at any time as soon as the registration system went up, but they only encouraged particular age groups in descending order at certain times in order to prevent the system from being overloaded if every single adult in BC tried to register on the same day. So when the BC government announced, for example “Adults 50+ can now register to be informed of when they can get vaccinated” what they really mean is “We are now encouraging adults 50+ to register now, but any adult can register to be notified of when they can book their vaccination”

So if you’ve already registered in the system ahead of when your age cohort was ‘encouraged’ to register, you’re all set and just need to wait for a text/email informing you of when you can actually book your vaccination

Good news!

The Covid19 outbreak in Prince Rupert, BC, has been esentially eliminated after the city was given early access to 1 dose of one of the vaccines; 85% of the people took it, and cases went from 120 to 3 in less than a month.

Turns out that things based on Science actually do work.

Another important thing to note is that Prince Rupert's mass vaccination campaign was done almost entirely with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

So the fact that they've achieved near-elimination of COVID in their community with that particular vaccine should put to rest any worries about the need to 'vaccine shop' and wait for the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines. If your first opportunity for a vaccine is with the AstraZeneca one, take it!

I heard the liberal convention wants to make ubi a priority. Then why did Trudeau reject NDP motions to do that in the past and Trudeau also said covid 19, when everyone lost their jobs it wouldn’t be the time for that? If they are serious about this, though I have my doubts. UBI could solve poverty, prevent people from dying from our sometimes severely cold weather, homeless people from dying I mean, also could be good suicide prevention and other things. I think this could help people go back to school to become doctors, scientists and also I heard studies that it can improve people’s mental health. More people going back to school and starting businesses could really improve the economy and ubi would help people who cannot work. Maybe it could help that anon a few weeks back who couldn’t get ASHE. UBI could help so many people who are not able to work due to severe disabilities and back injuries. UBI is a great idea. But the NDP has tried to push for this and the liberal party and Trudeau, even though there were calls for ubi at the beginning of the pandemic- Why have they waited so long? I do not know if I trust the liberal party. Trudeau is still racist and other kinds of bigoted for waiting so long to give us ubi

It sounds like pre-election PR bullshit to me, honestly. Just like the Liberals always do—they promise good things before an election, use those promises to hoodwink people into voting for them under threat of otherwise having a Tory government take over and trash the country, and then utterly fail to deliver the good things that they pretended to promise to us.

It’s a running joke at this point

Medium spicy take: I'm all for criticizing Ford and his terrible management of Covid but I don't understand why I'm not seeing proportional rage directed at Kenney. Alberta currently has the highest case rate in Canada AND has a worse vaccine rollout than Ontario (both in terms of shots per capita and percent of vaccines sitting in freezers). I see SOME criticism of Alberta's covid management but not nearly enough imo

Probably because there’s already widespread disapproval of how him and the UCP have handled COVID; polling indicates that he’d lose an election quite decisively if one were held right now. I think Ford (along with Legault in Quebec, Moe in Saskatchewan, and Horgan in BC) stands out because he continues to maintain relatively high approval ratings in spite of their provinces all mishandling their respective provinces’ 3rd waves whereas Kenney’s popularity has correspondingly cratered with how he’s mishandled COVID in his province

Unless the premier, party, or province is specifically mentioned, I can no longer tell the difference between tweets about doug ford and tweets about john horgan.

Might be a spicy take, but if there’s one thing the BC government’s (in)actions over the last few months have shown, it’s that it’s time for fresh leadership atop the BC NDP. Horgan and Dix are the two most prominent examples, but so much of the BC NDP leadership is a remnant of the same party from the 90s that fully embraced neoliberalism but with an orange coat of paint. That same dynamic is now fully on display with the BC NDP’s current pandemic response being virtually identical to that of the Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservatives in Ontario (lax restrictions, lack of supports for essential workers, etc.).

I’m not fully ready to abandon the party yet, but I am increasingly leaning towards Horgan being the wrong person to lead BC going forward. Some fresh new faces as premier and in top cabinet positions (Bowinn Ma and Ravi Kahlon are two who’d be great IMO) would be welcome.

If you're in British Columbia, the government has created a website to register for Covid19 vaccines. Not everyone can register now, but keep checking back.

Slight correction: Not everyone can register for an appointment, but anyone with a BC Personal Health Number can pre-register to receive a confirmation number and log yourself in the system so that you'll automatically be notified via email or text when you are eligible. So even if your age group is still waiting for vaccination definitely make sure to register!
