Food Fun Facts for dad types!!!

•Adding butter or cheese or salt or whatever to your veggies so that you like them doesn’t change the nutritional content you get from said veggies.

•Additional calories eaten don’t negate the healthy benefits of food. And, stay with me here, low calorie foods are not more morally pure than high calorie foods.

•If making a food more palatable by adding butter (or whatever) is the make-or-break for someone to actually eat the vegetable, then the Brussel sprouts with butter are FUCKING HEALTHIER for you than the Brussel sprouts you don’t eat. A salad with ranch dressing is healthier for you than the dry greens you don’t eat. A sandwich with cheese and mayo is more healthy than the plain sandwich you don’t eat. The strawberry with whipped cream is more healthy than the strawberry you don’t eat.

•We actually don’t have to buy the bullshit that food that makes us happy or tastes good is less healthy.

very proud of the currently-growing generation’s ability to take consent seriously

incredibly disturbed by the way some of them have really vocally decided that consent culture applies to literally everything, up to and including other people’s right to literally just exist in a public space

it starts with something like “all nudity is sexual” or “wearing kinky clothes is inherently a sexual act” with the accompanying “since it’s sexual it requires consent from all involved parties, and seeing it is a form of involvement, so you need my consent to go out in public where i might see you” and once you start with that it has historically been – i’m as leery of slippery-slope arguments as anyone else but it *has historically, repeatedly been demonstrated* – a very, very short trip from there to policing gender expressions and etc and you know, we still live in a deeply homophobic and transphobic society, the whole thing where people are trying to make it illegal to exist in public while trans is … a thing, in real life, right now? and your “wearing a collar in public is an act of bondage sex to which i do not consent” bullshit is absolutely 100% in support of the evangelical puritans’ “existing while queer is an offense against god. jesus did not consent to you wearing clothing inconsistent with the gender i believe you should be presenting” i’m sure there are a number of people who KNOW those are the same thing with the same end goals/results and are doing it on purpose; i know that there are in fact bad-faith actors repurposing social justice language in service of oppression, you can watch it happen, see also all the conservatives currently parroting “my body my choice” as they endanger everyone around them during a global pandemic. but i think some of them are just naive and genuinely believe themselves to be both correct and leftist, and like. nope

it wasn’t all that long ago that people were in fact regularly getting arrested for wearing clothing inconsistent with their assumed gender. like it was illegal to cross-dress and the cops would go out and arrest trans women and trans men and butch lesbians and effeminiate gays, because of trans- and homophobia, and wearing the wrong clothes was literally the offense used as an excucse to enforce those -phobias. i am not eager to return to that in any way. you cannot argue that your imagined rules against “sexual clothing” would somehow not be used against trans people because, get this, there ARE people in the world for whom cross-dressing is a sex thing, even though the vast majority of trans people are not doing it for any such reason. if you think it’s acceptable to literally police the actions of everyone based on the fact that there are people who might get off on it, then your beliefs are, in actual practical fact of effect, in support of arresting trans people for failing to conform to gender presentation

Like, consent is very important and your comfort is very important but…I think people forget that the act of being visibly queer in public has often been interpreted as sexual. That our simple displays of affection are still considered to be inherently more sexual than the same thing but straight. A peck on the lips between two teenage girls or boys who are a couple in media will likely get a higher age rating than a boy and a girl because people consider it to be somehow more sexual.

I think the key is differentiating sex Vs sex adjacent? If someone wants to get railed over the trolleys at Tesco because they like being watched, that’s public sex, I am being directly exposed to/involved in it, and I do not constant to being made a part of that.

Someone wearing a harness in public because they’re into kinky sex and it makes them feel attractive? That’s sex adjacent, and not really that much different than putting on a little black dress to look sexy. Does it make me think about sex in a way the dress doesn’t? Yes but that’s on me, I am not being involved in someone’s actual sex without my consent. That I’ve internally decided one is more inherently sexual than the other (because it’s a less standard expression of sexuality and so I’ve not normalised it in the same way) doesn’t change the reality of it.

As always, nuance is involved but like, generally? The question is “am I actually being involved unwillingly in someone’s actual sex life or is this thing just making me think about their sex life and I feel uncomfortable with that?”. If it’s the latter the solution is not to ban it on grounds of consent but to learn to mind your own business and move on. Because again these exact ideas have been used to victimise LGBT folk forever, e.g. people getting mad about two men kissing because it’s a disgusting and inappropriate public display, because it made them think about sex that they’re not into and they confuse the act of two men kissing with it being as sexual as the things it brings to mind.

all this, but also, criminalising even actual ‘public’ sex (that isn’t actually intentionally sexual harassment, although of course with a shitty enough judge and/or insistent enough karen, you will get cases ruled as intentional sexual harassment when they aren’t) is also always going to be enforced so that it mostly affects queer people, poor people, and others who are more likely to lack the luxury of privacy in the first place. like yes, i too would prefer never overhearing strangers fuck in a public toilet, it’s annoying and wildly off-putting, but it’s about perspective on harm caused and i don’t really trust anyone who would call the cops on those people or try to harm them socially because of it

Disabled household facing complications during moving after being evicted

After being evicted at the end of May, my family is still (as of July 21st, 2021) having to live out of a hotel with our two cats. The cost of the hotel, our storage unit for our stuff, and necessities to live has put an increasing financial strain on us. Furthermore, my mother lost her job earlier this year due to the pandemic, reducing our income and extending this strain further. While they are attempting to find more permanent housing, I am not able to move forward with my life, including beginning my transition or finding a job.

Disabled household forced to live in a hotel until we can get permanent housing

I am an unemployed trans woman, and since June 1st, my family has been having to stay at a hotel with our cats after being evicted by our landlord. My mother lost her job due to COVID, leaving my father the only one who currently has a job, and it is difficult to find jobs that the rest of us are able to do. The costs of getting our possessions out of our apartment, paying for our storage unit, and keeping these rooms at this hotel have stretched us to our breaking point, and the remaining money for things like food is scarce.

If anyone is able to send anything, I have a Paypal and anything given will go towards food and other necessities. Thank you for anything you can give, be it money or simply reblogging.

Family has had to spend far more than expected and the future is uncertain, every little bit helps

I am an unemployed trans woman, and as of May 31st, my family and I no longer live in our apartment. Our landlord, after forcing us to utilize a specific (and expensive) cleaning service a year and a half ago (or so... September 2019), found an excuse to evict us from our apartment. Having lived there for over 22 years, this is a massive upheaval, and was done in large part because the apartment will inevitably be renovated and sold as a Co-op for a massive profit.

In order to do this, we have had to incur large fees, as well as physical exhaustion. We are all of us not physically fit, and yet we were required to empty and, to the best of our abilities, clean the apartment. We've had to hire movers, rent a storage unit, and are currently staying at a hotel with our two cats. None of this has been cheap, and in the end we will likely owe more to our landlord due to simply not having the collective spoons to properly clean out the apartment.

In the long term, we are attempting to buy a house, something only possible thanks to my mother's company firing her as a result of COVID. While this means that in the short term she received a severance and has been basically forced to retire, in the long term money will be tighter than ever, and while I have been assured that we will be able to handle the house purchase... things are tight, and the less I take out of the hands of my family for things such as food, the better.
