As Donald Trump tries to rush us back to work at a cost of millions of lives, it has never been clearer that “life” for the market represents death for us. This is not just a question of whether Trump will call for us to return to work before the scientists give him permission; right now, everywhere that workers are being compelled to risk exposure to COVID-19 in order to pay rent, the market is already being prioritized over human life, just as it was before the pandemic. Trump and the other proponents of capitalism are literally the vanguard of death.

Technocrats pretend to offer an alternative, promising to secure our survival. In fact, they just aim to re-open the same economy, according to the same logic, but with more pervasive control mechanisms. This is the economy that had already destroyed the biosphere and immiserated the majority of the world's population, in which a few billionaires control everything while billions go hungry. When they call for more surveillance and control, they speak about protecting "the most vulnerable," but we know from experience that any power that the state accrues will be turned immediately against the most vulnerable.

In response to those who would countenance death for the sake of their precious bar graphs and those who offer us bare survival in return for total submission, we assert that life, freedom, and resistance are all dependent upon each other. The only way to ensure our safety and the safety of all humanity is for us to establish a horizontal distribution of resources and information, the autonomy to decide what risks are worth taking, and the collective power to defend ourselves from those who would force risks or control measures upon us.
