sometimes people try to tell me that scientists are paragons of rationality and I have to break it to them that I have yet to work in a lab that didn’t have at least one weird secret shrine in it
new guy: why is all of the equipment in this room covered in toys?
me: dONn’t touch those
new guy:
me: they need the toys to function. if they don’t all have toys they get jealous.
new guy:
new guy:
me: when something breaks just take the wizard and wave it around for a while. they seem to like that.
Science is rational, scientists are human.
In Taiwan we have a special brand of snacks named 乖乖 (literally means “well behaved” but in a casual way like when one’s compliment a child or a pet of being good) that has green package.
It has become the lucky charm in the IT industry because engineers believe it will make machine acting good (like the name of the snack) and stay in green light (like the color of the snack’s package) when a 乖乖 is put on top of a server.
It is the only food allowed in a server room and the biggest semicondoctor company in Taiwan (which is also the biggest worldwide) even commissioned the snack factory to make a customized version with blessing on the package.
This is how a server room is blessed by 乖乖. You put at least one on top of each server. It’s important that the engineers change them before the expire date because legend says the snack looses it’s power after expire date.
You’ll hear engineers swearing up and down that their server room crushed down the one time they forgot to change the snack. Or some newbie ate the forbidden snack put on top of their server and caused a disastrous crush down.
The 乖乖 religion later spread to all people who want their machine to act nice. In the lab we put 乖乖 on ultra-low freezer (you really don’t want it to drop dead along with your 2 years’ worth of sample/data), mass spectrometer etc.
When Taiwan’s about to launch the first self made satellite in 2017, the develop team even put 乖乖 around the satellite model to prey for a successful launch (it did). This shit is real.
Broke: Humans are inherently good
Broke: Humans are inherently evil
Woke: Humans are, for good or evil, inherently ridiculous
i just said the same thing on twitter but please please please consider standing up for remote learning options even if everything does somehow go back to normal. so many physically disabled people drop out of school/college because of inaccessibilty. we have been asking for an option like this for so long and keeping it would change the lives of sooooo many people. we have an opportunity to start reforming the educational system to be more accessible to disabled and poor people and i really dont want to lose remote options because ableds are too lazy to keep hosting video calls.
this is okay to reblog but physically abled ppl be quiet!
best damn post on the site
can you guess which job required a signed doctor’s note for an unpaid sick day?
it wasn’t my engineering job
it was when i was a cashier at home depot
meanwhile, my engineering job will be like, ok, you’re sick, get well soon and i won’t lose pay. meanwhile i had to spend half of my sick day when I was working at home depot to go to a clinic to get a note that cost money for a day i wasn’t even going to get paid for.
so fuck corporations that put indignities on minimum wage workers for even their free time when literally in their corporate office they don’t give a shit if head office workers are calling in sick but god forbid the cashier take a day off unpaid without proof. like fuck off
boys will be boys
Are...
Are they burried in snow?!
Sand I'm guessing, but honestly it could be snow too
Sand. You can see the footprints in it.
I already knew a lot of criticisms about cryptocurrency and NFTs but HOLY SHIT Dan Olson just spent two hours very carefully and viciously picking apart every single aspect of the entire operation and explaining exactly why it's capitalism at its worst and is basically a perfect scam machine
there's so much here that it's hard to do a tl;dr, and frankly you really need to watch the whole thing to see how each point is made, but I will try to summarize the main points:
- contrary to the stated goal of freeing the little guy from the clutches of wall street fat cats, everything about crypto benefits people who already have a shitload of money.
- it does not solve any problems inherent to capitalism. it is anarcho-capitalism in its purest form.
- it's very good at attracting people susceptible to scams and then keeping them engaged through groupthink, making it very easy to make shitloads of money scamming people and making it impossible to return the money without undoing the chain itself.
- the rise of the Web 3.0, which is indelibly intertwined with crypto and the blockchain, has dire implications for privacy. (ex: a public, unchangeable ledger also means that someone can write your home address and phone number into that ledger and you'll be unable to remove it)
- it also has dire implications for the general population as everything becomes monetized and available for speculators to gamble on.
something I don't think people appreciate enough about Reddit is the sheer dedication tens of thousands of people can have to a good joke
for example
The funniest thing about this pandemic is the adults coming out in droves to pretend that they have ever cared about the emotional wellbeing of children in public schools
The people have spoken, and the people wanted more Voyd. (I do, too!)
I wrote this comic largely out of spite after some mean anon sent a message saying they were pissy about me shipping Voyd with “the ugliest character.” So I took it upon myself to make this as a big FUCK YOU because Brick is a treasure.
It makes sense to me that Brick’s speech pattern could be the result of a traumatic brain injury (specifically, aphasia). Being a tank-type, she’s probably thrown into very violet situations more than the average Super. I also loved the idea of her slow speech being a perfect foil for Voyd’s excitable rapid-fire chatter, and how using ASL would turn the tables and have Voyd be more slow and careful while Brick can speak more eloquently. <3
Throwback to some of my favorite old Incredibles comics.♥
the experience creating art on tumblr and twitter is so wildly different because it’s like
twitter: you make one post that does not cater to the incredibly specific niche interest you have catered and 15 of your followers scatter like mice
tumblr: half my dash is DC Comics. I do not remember following a DC blog. I follow several DC fanartists and apparently have been for several years. I have no idea when they became DC artists. I have never read a DC comic nor do I have any interest in doing so. I will not be unfollowing.
If Big Pharma is so corrupt, why do you want them to control the entire healthcare system? Because that is who would take over healthcare if the US ever does adopt Healthcare For All.
Oh sweetie, no
Not all power is the same. Big Pharma is a collection of for-profit companies, while Medicare-for-all would be a non-profit system. M4A would (or should) involve a wide variety of reforms which would benefit the people at the expense of Big Pharma, including: negotiating down drug prices, reforming provider payment structures, investing in public domain pharma research, expanding access to generics and biosimilars, banning pay-for-delay deals, cracking down on pharmacuetical marketing, etc.
Oh so you like birds? Name every bird.
okay.
