Panama is home to an astonishing assortment of colored frogs belonging to the family Dendrobatidae, commonly called “poison-dart frogs”. This is a beautiful male strawberry poison-dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) photographed just aside of a main road in North-eastern Panama, while on the field with @losnaturalistas. It was both amazing and terrifying to see calling males while behind me big trucks and cars passed on a normal working day. We often have the beauty of nature just round the corner, be it Panama or wherever else. Learning what we have around is one of the first steps to care and act for wildlife.

Striped Poison-dart frog (Phyllobates lugubris) male carrying some of its own tadpoles to a suitable rearing pool into the rainforest. This species shows uniparental male care, so only the father cares for the eggs and tadpoles while they’re developing into very small water reservoirs into the rainforest. It can rehydrate them if the water is becoming scarce, or carry the tadpoles in small groups to other locations when needed.

Blessed Poison Dart Frogs (Ranitomeya benedicta) are diminutive animals found only in the lowland rainforests of Peru. Females will deposit eggs on horizontal leaves, and when the tadpoles hatch the male will transport them to water on his back.
