“One night, in Clair’s Restaurant, I approached Stormé and asked her if she would be willing to provide a $5 donation [towards a Christmas fund for people living with AIDS]. I told her what we were trying to do, and when I had finished, she turned to me and asked, “Are you going to be here for a few hours, baby?” I told her I would be, and several hours later Stormé walked back into the restaurant with over $2,000. I was speechless and unable to find the words to thank her appropriately, but Stormé simply said, “I’ll meet you here tomorrow with more.” She was true to her word.”
We’ll be talking more about Stormé on June 1st when we cover the Stonewall Riots, so now is a great time to check out our podcast and learn about her life!

“Progress? by George Meyfarth III and Philip F. Meyfarth Each face is a composite of super-ellipse quadrants with exponents ranging from slightly less than 2 to about 400. The variations in location, size, and shape of the features are controlled by a Gaussian random number generator. The trend toward squareness and conformity in the lower right corner results from predetermined changes in the statistical properties. The mouth expression is correlated with eye position to suggest apprehension in those who see that they themselves are not far from total mechanization. Programmed in FORTRAN and plotted on-line on an IBM 1627 driven by an IBM 1130.”

“Am I here, or am I there? Or is the true self neither this nor that, neither here nor there, but something so varied and wandering that it is only when we give the rein to its wishes and let it take its way unimpeded that we are indeed ourselves?”

Like other spadefoots, the New Mexico spadefoot toad [Spea multiplicata] is very small, and spends the majority of it’s time burrowed below the ground. However, these toads can occasionally be found above the surface, and are often uprooted accidentally in people’s gardens and fields. Images by Steve Collins in Swisher County, Texas.
