No one ever mentions how Gale saw it as a competition. Gale was competing with Peeta. Peeta was learning to live with Gale. Cause he can’t live with Katniss without Gale. And to Gale. Up until the the quarter quell he had the upper hand. Everything they had was fake. Katniss didn’t want it. Peeta won’t better her life like he would. He knows her better. On a different level then Peeta. The things they bond with Peeta can’t. Their dads dying, Seam life, making ends meet, the struggle of raising children from a young age, not having choices. That’s something that Peeta doesn’t get. But what he don’t get is Katniss isn’t catnip no more. She has different problems. Different struggles he don’t get. That Peeta does. The nightmares, the horrors, the death of rue. Peeta wasn’t there but he gets it. The struggle to keep yourself moving. A whole other type of survival. And Peeta didn’t think about that stuff. He didn’t compare that stuff when Gale got whipped. When Gale got whipped he stood up cause that was Katniss’s best friend. Shit it could’ve been her lover. But he still did it. Because he never second guess when he was with her. When it came to her. He never put himself first. And that almost led to their destruction.
Readers be like, Peeta is too good, too perfect when you read the books, it’s annoying!
But, guys, he is not! Not at all! It’s just we read what Katniss thinks and she is head over heels in love with him. He saved her life when she was 11, she always saw him like he was perfect, because he was perfect for her! She describes him like he is the most righteous man in the galaxy, because he is for her, we read her story.
But if you look at Peeta, at everything he was doing, he is one manipulative son of a bitch.
He manipulated the crowd into seeing Katniss as someone desirable, he lied a lot to get sponsors for her. He knew she had something going on with Gale (although she didn’t have anything yet, but he thought she did) and still flirted his way into her heart.
One thing certain, he did love Katniss unconditionally. He would do anything for her. And that’s why she only see how perfect her boy with a bread is, because he is perfect for her.
And come on, we all would sell our souls to have a partner as devoted as Peeta.

Thinking about how incredibly brave it was of Suzanne to make the main love interest a kind, sensitive, emotionally intelligent, disabled, stocky blond in 2008 when the trend at the time was skinny, tall, lanky, sarcastic, hates-everyone-but-main character, rageboy. And how absolutely genius it was to have BOTH of those types in the same series and have Katniss choose Peeta. Groundbreaking.
Can we talk about how Gale having that conversation with Peeta about who Katniss will choose is a sign that, in a way, Gale has retained some innocence or naïveté that Peeta and Katniss had long lost by then. That’s the only thing that makes any sense to me, because Katniss and Peeta’s minds were in completely different galaxies and Gale was still thinking silly teen boy thoughts.
in catching fire, when everyone was trying to hold off the quarter quell, peeta said katniss was “pregnant”. everyone was in shambles because “what about the baby!! the baby could die!!” but no one was thinking about all the other kids who died from the games themself. this is literally the whole controversy with school shootings and abortion laws in america today.

katniss knowing her mother isn't at fault for falling into a catatonic depression and that she was completely out of he depth and mourning but still never being able to get over that feeling of betrayal when she slipped away when she needed her most and left her and prim on the brink of starvation
Certain words can change your brain forever and ever so you do have to be very careful about it.
Thinking again about how Peeta gets sick from the train food, that it’s too rich for him, that he lived on stale and burnt bread, that he might have had materially enough food but not the right kinds. Thinking about how malnutrition is a spectrum, and food insecurity looks different in different households. That yes, he might not be one missed meal from starving to death, but that his teeth are probably weak. His mouth probably breaks out in ulcers when he eats fresh fruit. That he probably snuck down to the bakery when he was hungry and all there was were spoonfuls of sugar or jam. Maybe he had to take cake scraps to school for lunch, and how awful that would be, because it looks so luxurious but it’s not. How he probably loved when his dad bought one of Katniss’s squirrels because it was so fresh and alive, so unstale. Thinking a lot about food insecurity.
