Do you like John Singer Sargent at all?

YES i love my boy sargent!! he's one of my favorite 19th c. american painters not that i have a ton of those lol but i think his portraits are so vivacious and fun and elegant and diverse he reminds me of velazquez a lot too so anyway i really enjoy looking at his paintings

also his brushwork is indulgently perfect so loud and proud i MELT.. like

ana mendieta was a perfect ethereal earth angel its just true!!

The Beheading of St. John the Baptist (1608) is the only painting Caravaggio signed. The artist’s name (“Michelangelo,” from his full name Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio) is written in the Baptist’s blood on the pavement.

31. Are there any themes in art that you think are overdone?

idealized woman as vehicle of political propaganda

33. If you could own any famous work of art, what would you choose?

idk about owning any art but imagine having a rublev icon around so you could transcend your abject corporeality whenever u felt like it. i'd be down for that.

26. What is your least favorite art movement?

i mean. who am i to say but i guess i do hate movements centered on masculinity, violence, 'rationality,' white supremacy, capitalism, academies, etc. (read: power power power). how about futurism have you seen that filthy manifesto.. ("We want to glorify war — the only cure for the world — militarism, patriotism, the destructive gesture of the anarchists, the beautiful ideas which kill, and contempt for woman.")

39. Why do you think Art is important?

so many reasons i'm not going to be reductive and give u some corny maxim about what art should or can be but i will say i believe it is so dang important to study art because if art is the most enduring aspect of our humanity (which i believe it is) then what can you say about the way power has written art history? that our cultural legacy is abused--works are glorified and others are erased, all are manipulated--to an end of oppression? its scary and sad but there are so many people out there revising and reclaiming history in a very positive way. i hope that soon ledger art is valued as highly as a marble venus i hope notions of 'civilization' and 'primitiveness' can be spoken of only in terms of their harmfulness rather than in some imperialistic dialogue about 'greatness'... i hope everyone can have the demystified, honest, and meaningful access to their human heritage they deserve.

28. What is your most memorable museum experience?

ai weiwei: according to what? was of course so incredible some works were so personal and intimate and tender and others like this are just beyond words. but no matter how shocking and horrifying and heartbreaking the art is there is a sustained optimism and faith. his art is devastating but never cynical or hopeless or nihilistic. it's art coming from a place of compassion and love unlike anything else.

Oh gosh, I kinda want to ask you all of them, honestly... 3, 25, 36

3. Who do you think is the most overrated artist and why?

obviously all of art history has been written so we all end up worshiping the wrong people……. i think any mainstream white male artist could go down here, michelangelo to ingres. i’ve said a lot how i think this site’s obsession w bouguereau is dumb af because his paintings perpetuate all sorts of horrible institutions (eg misogyny & imperialism). slick technique and passe, uninventive, dehumanizing compositions are not so special or edgy or anything.

25. What is your favorite medium to work in?

graphite pastel conte etc

36. If you could travel back in time what era would you choose and why?

romantic era because i love their style love the hysteria and beauty and spiritual ecstasy. also i’d have a really melodramatic affair w byron just cuz it sounds fun and wild and i would kill to throw a glass of wine in his face.

Linda Montano and Tehching Hsieh, Art/Life: One Year Performance 1983-1984 (Rope Piece). For one year, the two artists remain tied together at the waist by an eight foot rope. They are not allowed to touch one another.

From a 1984 interview with Alex and Allyson Grey:

A&AG: Now that you've been tied together for almost a year, how do you feel about each other?
TH: I think Linda is the most honest person I've known in my life and I feel very comfortable to talk—to share my personality with her. That's enough. I feel that's pretty good. We had a lot of fights and I don't feel that is negative. Anybody who was tied this way, even if they were a nice couple, I'm sure they would fight, too. This piece is about being like an animal, naked. We cannot hide our negative sides. We cannot be shy. It's more than just honesty—we show our weakness.
LM: Tehching is my friend, confidant, lover, son, opponent, husband, brother, playmate, sparring partner, mother, father, etc. The list goes on and on. There isn't one word or one archetype that fits. I feel very deeply for him.
