the barbenheimer experience i had was so funny i saw oppenheimer first and in a quiet scene we could literally hear ken singing in the theater next to us and then during barbie it when was quiet we could hear a fucking explosion coming from the oppenheimer screening
ryan gosling this. ryan gosling that. margot robbie made barbie what it is. she OWNED it. put respect on her name
The elderly woman Barbie shares a smile with is not Barbara Handler, but in fact costume designer, Ann Roth.
Ann Roth has had a long career as the costume designer for a wide range of movies, including one of my favorites, Mamma Mia!
the thing that gets me about about barbie is that barbie land wasn’t even purposefully a matriarchy, barbie land came about because of the way little girls were playing with their barbies, it wasn’t created by mattel it was created by the people using the toys, so the fact that the barbies ignored the ken’s and had girls night every night wasn’t because they had some bias against him, it was just an accurate depiction of how kids play with barbies. I had some ken dolls as a child and they were essential to the plot in the sense that of course my barbie has a boyfriend because that represented the world i saw around me, but also he didn’t have any purpose in my dream world because i was only interested in what the girls were doing because they represented me and how i wanted to be, I wanted girls night every night I wanted the girls to be president and austronauts and not because of some inherent feminist idea but because I was a girl and I wasn’t thinking about boys, ken was an accessory. this movie wasn’t made to change the world but it showed a different perspective than what we usually see which I thought was fun. Men don’t have to be the centre of all our stories and its not even because we hate them, sometimes we’re just not thinking about them
The Barbie Movie is the movie of all time for many reasons, but the core message being "Perfoming gender roles hurts everyone, you should be your authentic self no matter what society says" really knocked it out of the park
Barbie saying I don't feel perfect anymore and how she never has been president or written a book or done something important and that absolutely struck a cord with me that I started tearing up in the movie theater. I felt seen just by that moment of barbie being vulnerable.
theres just something so sad and lovely about the way barbie went from freaking out over flat feet and cellulite to truly appreciating the lady at the bus stop to going back home and finding out all her friends had basically become slaves to finally accepting herself at the end.
greta gerwig managed to condense almost everything a women regularly feels into a 3 hour movie, and that makes me so, so represented and also emotional.
Muriel Fahrion, the creator of Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears, was under a work for hire contract when she created them and as a result has received no residuals over the last 40+ years. If you like either of those properties, consider purchasing something from her website. She has art and cute jewelry!
One thing that tickled me about the Barbie movie was how Gloria's husband is (imo) a 'Real World' Ken.
We see very little of him in the movie. In both of his scenes, he's trying to speak/learn Spanish. He does nothing important or if consequence in terms of the plot... But he's trying to learn a language his wife and daughter speak. He's not excelling, I'm not even sure if he's succeeding. But he is kensistently trying.
For all of the 'Real World' men who are antagonists or opponents to Barbie, El Esposo de Gloria (as he is listed in the credits) has true Kenergy.
ah yes the four genders
- Barbie
- Ken
- Allen
- corporate office worker
the fact that the first female human experience barbie goes through is being self conscious and experiencing sexual harassment mirrors how growing up as a girl one day you’re okay and the next all of a sudden you feel bad about your appearance and are receiving unwanted advances is something that can be so fucking important to be recognized in film
bartleby sending me (12) on insane and dangerous quests to murder people because he’s a timeless being who has no concept of age and doesn’t realize this is royally fucked up:
“rap is the worst music genre” “no actually it’s soul” “no actually it’s jazz” “no actually it’s ska” “no actually it’s r&b” hey guys do you notice a common denominator in the genres you hate or is it just me
