JULY 2022 PROMPT - NO CONNECTION

POSTING DATES July 15th - 19th

As the winner of May’s challenge, @walkingaline gets to choose the theme for July, and has chosen No Connection. Whether it’s a phone with no signal, a computer with no internet, something mystical interfering with angel radio, or something else, we’d like you to write a story where “no connection” drives the plot.

*** Please make a list of all your promos and send them to @writergamermom by the end of the promo time! *** All you need to include is a list of what type of promo you put up, which fic it was for, and where you posted it. You don’t have to include links, but they’re helpful, and being helpful to the one who tallies your points will earn you a bonus.

@thayerkerbasy will work at getting everybody’s promos up on the various sites, so if you don’t want your posts mirrored on another site, please let him know. If you’re on PF, please feel free to post your own promos to the community.

All Times are GMT-7 Posting Dates July 15th at 12am through July 19th at 11:59pm Promo Dates July 15th at 12am through July 23rd at 9:00pm Challenge Ends July 23rd at 9:00pm

HOW TO PLAY: Post a fic to AO3 (include it in the spncoldesthits collection on AO3) and reblog this post with an AO3 link to your fic. (Please include the link in your reblog. The point is so your followers can see the link to your fic when you reblog the post.)

FIC POINTS: hits +1 point  |  kudos = +10 points | comments = +20 points

PROMO POINTS: Fic reviews, liveblogging, banners/artwork, podfic/vlogging all earn you bonus negative points (please tag your posts with #spncoldesthitspromo).  You can earn a LOT of bonus negative points for making a masterpost of your promos and sending it to @writergamermom when you’re done. Additionally, each comment you leave on your competitors’ fics (up to a max of 5 per fic) earns you -10 points. Please keep all comments relevant to the fic, don’t spam the comments section with nonsense.

If we have reason to believe you’re commenting and promo’ing without having read the fics, you will receive a +1000 point penalty.

We reserve the right to award negative points on a whim for obvious time investment in promos and for general awesomeness. This is for fun and to help people feel better about their writing, so let’s be awesome to each other.

Remember, points are bad and the winner is the one with the lowest score. Have fun, and may the biggest loser win!

And Seek (Not) to Alter Me Kickstarter: Now Live!

Duck Prints Press LLC is delighted to announce that the Kickstarter for our second anthology, And Seek (Not) to Alter Me, has commenced!

In And Seek (Not) to Alter Me, 16 authors and 16 artists have come together to create an exquisite, full-color collection of artwork and stories inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Much Ado About Nothing. We encouraged contributors to stretch their imaginations, think outside the box, and put their own unique—and queer—twist on Benedick, Beatrice, Hero, Claudio, Don Pedro, and the whole gang! In true Shakespearean fashion, our creators utilize gender, sexuality, romanticism, and a host of costume changes to tell unique stories—some featuring original characters, some characters from the play—that show Shakespeare’s work in a whole new light.

So—grab a cup of tea and reread or rewatch your favorite version of Much Ado About Nothing to refresh your memory. Our stories and artworks feature wlw, mlm, poly relationships, trans characters, gender swaps, canon divergent tales, AUs...there's even a two-page comic! Settle in with this delightful collection and enjoy visiting Messina (and elsewhere!) and falling in love with Leonato's family and the troops of Don Pedro's army (and many others!) again and again and again!

And Seek (Not) to Alter Me is a stunning zine, printed in full color, A4 size (8 1/4 inches x 11 3/4 inches/21 cm x 30 cm), approximately 150 pages long. It includes 16 stories, each up to 5,000 words long, and 20 full-page interior artworks. Creators share their visions with us, discuss their inspiration, and take us along on a journey to experience what this play and these characters mean to them.

Ready to get your Shakespearean queer on? Us too!

The Kickstarter for And Seek (Not) to Alter Me will run through April 14th, 2022.

Hey everyone!

I’m a part of this anthology!!

It’s my first published original fiction, and I couldn’t be more excited!  We’re on the doorstep of getting funded (about $300 away) with 3 days left!  This anthology is in a style similar to a fanzine and it has queer stories for everyone, no matter your preferences!

If you haven’t checked it out yet, please make sure to do so, and if you can support it, great!  If not, please reblog this to help spread the word so we can sprint across the finish line!

Every single person involved in this project is a fanauthor or fanartist! And that's true from our ownership (hi, I'm Claire, better known in fandom as @unforth) all the way through those who do our graphic design, our typesetting, our planning...everyone! (Well, except our lawyer and our merch vendors). Some, like Aria, are public about their participation in both fandom and this book; others have opted to separate their fandom selves from the publishing selves. Some of the folks who are open about their inclusion?

Authors: @erajakira; @arialerendeair; @nottesilhouette; @dragonmuse; and @draco-at-dawn

Editors: @unforth; @jhoomwrites; @owlishintergalactic

I'm writing all this 'cause it's occurred to me people don't know, but Duck Prints Press explicitly exists to help fancreators make the transition into paid publishing work, and we only work with people are active in fandom!

ANYWAY. All that said! We're thrilled to share that we've reached our base funding goal!! "And Seek (Not) to Alter Me" will see print!! It's such great news, and a huge relief.

But! We're still hoping to reach some of our stretch goals.

We’re at $12,150 right now.

If we can hit $12,500, we’ll be able to print the books (and include in the e-book!) art for the back cover by front cover artist Gio Guimarães! Backers at Levels 3, 4, 5, and 6 will also receive a second art print (at no additional cost to the backers!). To be honest, we’re pretty certain we’ll hit this goal – so confident, in fact, that we already have commission Gio, contract signed and everything.

More ambitious – if we can hit $16,500, we can give all our authors and artists a raise from 1 cent per word/$50 per page to 2 cents per word/$100 per page – doubling how much we pay them! We’d love to be able to do this, and we think it can be done, but we need your help!

Do you love this project? Do you want to support our authors and artists? If you haven’t backed yet, consider doing so – just $15 will get you the e-book in PDF, ePub, and Mobi format, or you can take advantage of this one-and-only time to get the book in print format, for $40!

If you can’t afford it (we get it! times are tough!) or if you already have backed – help us spread the word! Reblog, retweet, share, and boost our posts on one or more of our social media accounts!

As always, you can find our Kickstarter campaign here – get yours before it’s too late! 3 days left…our campaign ends on Thursday, April 14th at 11:30 a.m. Eastern!

(and don't forget, you can buy our current titles and merch on our website, support us monthly on Patreon, or give us a one time donation on ko-fi - though, if you're a ko-fi user, consider giving us a follow because in the next week or two we'll be setting up our ko-fi to support monthly subscriptions and merch sales, so stay tuned...)

We'd love a strong final push on this KS project, so help us spread the word - signal boosts always appreciated!!

My book press's current crowdfunding campaign is entering it's final 24 hours! This is your only chance to get the book in print, if you want it, and even if you don't want it I'd love your help signal boosting this post to spread the word!

OCTOBER 2021 PROMPT - UNSUPERVISED GARBAGE

POSTING DATES October 15TH-19TH)

As there were two winners of August’s challenge, each has chosen a theme. Fics for October will need to fit both themes to qualify.

@walkingaline would like us to write stories about someone being left unsupervised, and whatever mayhem might ensue. Show us the disasters that occur when someone is on their own.

AND

@alwaysthrowsscissors would like us to return to the ancient past of Coldest Hits and write some hot garbage. Your story should have confusing plots, typos, grammar issues, nonsensical storytelling, and/or shitty characterization. Write the worst story you can imagine.

Between those, you all have enough to juggle, so there are no +/- points to work into your fics this month, HOWEVER, you can earn extra points for your promos this month if they are also hot garbage. Show us your terrible photo editing skills, draw fan art in MS Paint, ramble off topic in your liveblog, and ignore your spellcheck.

*** Please make a list of all your promos and send them to @writergamermom by the end of the promo time! *** All you need to include is a list of what type of promo you put up, which fic it was for, and where you posted it. You don’t have to include links, but they’re helpful, and being helpful to the one who tallies your points can earn you a bonus.

@thayerkerbasy will work at getting everybody’s promos up on the various sites, so if you don’t want your posts mirrored on another site, please let him know. If you’re on PF, please feel free to post your own promos to the community.

All Times are GMT-7 Posting Dates October 15th at 12am through October 19th at 11:59pm Promo Date October 15th at 12am through October 23rd at 9:00pm Challenge Ends October 23rd at 9:00pm

Go play.

Add Magic to Taste Author Spotlight: Willa Blythe

Willa Blythe (she/her) started talking late and telling stories early,  and she hasn’t stopped doing either of those things since. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Playwriting and a Master’s in Literature, and she still learned most everything she knows about writing from reading  someone else’s. She and her pre-teen son Jack are a dynamic duo when it comes to road trip karaoke and dinner table roleplay, but disagree about minor matters like homework and chores and whether or not you must do those things. When not working at her day job, teaching, parenting, trying to convince herself to write, or talking on the phone for hours to the three people in her life who are still into talking on the phone, Willa enjoys picking up new hobbies that she’ll pursue to excess for two and a half months; downloading 67 mods for a video game she’ll play 4 hours of before abandoning for three years; reading halves and thirds and quarters of books; and playing a lot of Dungeons & Dragons with friends online. She’s still waiting for the lady knight of her dreams to come pick her up from this really boring tower—but at least the view is pretty sweet. Her contribution to Add Magic to Taste will be Willa’s first publication, and she’s both grateful and excited for this opportunity to bring a bit of magic to the mundane.

Teaser:

“Ah, okay, well— that’s— that’s super unfortunate, I really do feel for you, Thea, but—”
“But what?”
Merrily tried to pull her hand away, gently.
Thea did not let it go.
Oh, no.
“Well…” Merrily shrugged, trying to let her down easy. “I do small magic? The Little Practice, we call it. Good luck charms, help with intentions, dream-reading, stuff like that. Curses, that’s…”
“That’s…?” Thea kept hold of her hand, a prisoner, caught in the limbo of the over-the-counter area that was normally reserved for the passing of currency and drinks.
“Well, that’s Big Magic,” Merrily said. “I don’t do that. I’m sorry. You’ll have to find someone else.”
Thea looked at her. And blinked. And then—to Merrily’s horror—began to cry.
“No no no, don’t do that, please don’t do that,” Merrily begged, trying to pull away to find her a tissue, but Thea held tight to her hand.
“There—is—no—one—else,” Thea said, in a thin, shaking voice on the edge of disaster.
Merrily just couldn’t let this happen. Not with tears. Not if she was never going to get her hand back.
And definitely not to the prettiest girl she’d ever seen.

Is Merrily going to help Thea? You can see how things work out for these two, and read 19 other fantastic fluffy queer stories, by backing the Add Magic to Taste Kickstarter!

We’ve hit our second stretch goal and our authors are now getting a raise!

So exciting!!!!

You can tell I’m excited because of all the exclamations I using!!!!

!!!!!!!

Duck Prints Press LLC is thrilled to announce that the Kickstarter for our first anthology, Add Magic to Taste, is now live!

For Add Magic to Taste, 20 authors have come together to produce new, original short stories uniting four of our absolute favorite themes: queer relationships, fluff, magic, and coffee shops! Our diverse writers have created an even more diverse collection of stories guaranteed to sweeten your coffee and warm your tart.

Love wlw? So do we!

Love mlm? We’ve got you covered!

Love genderqueer characters? Raise those trans, enby, agender, and other flags high!

Love aces? Same, and we don’t (only) mean playing cards!

Love poly relationships? Hey, we’re sharing a brain!

We won’t say this anthology has it all - there are too many identities in the world for us to fit all of them into one anthology of 20 stories - but if you want some queer fluff and happy feelings, you've come to the right place. Add Magic to Taste features characters of different races, ethnicities, sexualities, romanticisms, gender identities, religions, and home nations, united by the common theme of finding someone (or more than one someone) to enjoy a muffin and a cuppa with - for today or for a lifetime, romantically or otherwise!

Each story is never-before-published, approximately 5,000 words long, and features each author’s unique take on our theme. Our beautiful digest-size trade paperback book features cover art by Liz Lee Illustrations (@lizleeillustration on Tumblr - with the potential for more art - see our stretch goals!) and formatting by Hermit Prints (@hermitwrites on Tumblr).

Interested? (OF COURSE YOU ARE!) Learn more!

The Kickstarter for Add Magic to Taste will run through Saturday, August 14th at 11 AM EDT - so follow us here, check it out, and if you want to support an awesome group of writers creating an amazing collection of fluffy queer stories - back our project!

LOOK!

So many years in the making and so much hard work and perseverance and I can’t believe I’ve been a part of the amazing thing we are doing here.

Announcing: Our First Call for Artists!

Duck Prints Press LLC is thrilled to announce we are planning our second anthology, a collection of works inspired by William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing! This anthology will feature both artwork and fiction, and will be similar in structure to a zine - except that, unlike a zine, we’ll be paying all contributors!

So, fanartists - are you interested in getting paid to imagine a queer version of Much Ado About Nothing?

We’d love to have you!

This post is not a call for art submissions! Like a fandom zine, we’re asking prospective artists to submit a portfolio of three works that you think best reflects your capabilities and a style you’d like to use for this anthology; you’ll also be asked to give us a link to your portfolio. We’ll review all the applications and select the artists we feel are the best fit for this project, and the selected artists will have creative license to create an artwork of their choice that features a queer interpretation of Much Ado About Nothing!

If you’re interested in this opportunity, this is your moment - read more about the anthology and, if you’re interested, submit an application!

Artist Applications for this anthology are open from May 2nd, 2021 through May 15th, 2021. The selected artists will be contacted on May 31st.

Jumping head first into the second antho!

WELCOME TO MAY TROPE MAYHEM!

May Trope Mayhem is a multi-fandom/original fic writing event, also open to other content creators if ya’ll are feeling so inspired! We’ve put together a list of 31 of our favorite tropes, one per day through the month of May, and we encourage creators to join us for this month of fun tropey mayhem.

May Trope Mayhem is open to anyone who wants to create anything - art, gif sets, mood boards, etc. - but we’re emphasizing fic writing

Our goal is to promote motivation and help with habit building, so we’re encouraging people to keep their ficlets under 1,000 words, or if you make art or a gif or some such, to stick to a sketch or a single image.

How can you participate? It’s easy! To participate, write a ficlet, a poem, or create any other content that you want, aligned with the prompt for the day! Post your correctly tagged fills to Tumblr, and we’ll reblog them! (you must tag warnings such as gore, MCD, sexual content, etc., so that people can avoid triggering material!) Please also tag fandom and ship, so people can find what interests them! We ask that you put the tags at the top of your post, so they’re easy to find. If you write more than 1k words, please use a read more, or if you write something with NSFW content or potentially triggering material, please put the entire story under a read more.

Ping us (@duckprintspress) or tag your creations “#may trope mayhem” and we’ll reblog them! We’ll reblog all fills posted before June 8th, 2021.

If you post to AO3, you can also add them to our collection there!

(Note that we’ll only reblog works that respect our tagging rules and “read more” usage rules.)

You don’t have to sign up, just post your fills. You don’t have to be a member of the Press. You don’t have to be part of a specific fandom, and we’re open to all ships, genres, formats, etc! You don’t have to post fills on the corresponding day, though we ask that if you’re writing for a day that hasn’t happened yet, please wait for that day to post.

This is a low-pressure event, held all in good fun, and we look forward to seeing what you create!

HELP US NAME THIS DUCK!

Have you seen Duck Prints Press’s adorable mascot? We affectionately call them Dux, but they don’t ’t have an actual name yet - and we want them to have one! All good ducks deserve excellent names! And we want you to help!

Who we are:

Duck Prints Press LLC is an independent publisher based in New York State. Our founding vision is to help fanfiction authors navigate the complex process of bringing their original works from first draft to print, culminating in publishing their work under our imprint. We are particularly dedicated to working with queer authors and publishing stories featuring characters from across the L.G.B.T.Q.I.A.+ spectrum.

How you can help name this excellent duck:

We’ve been longing to name this duck since they were created, and we’ve had a lot of ideas - but ultimately, we decided we want our Patrons to be the ones to name them!

So, want to help us name them?

When we reach 25 patrons (we’re at 19 right now!) we’ll open the floor and take suggestions on what to name this stunning, marvelous example of duck-dom.

(And while you’re pondering names - note that there is a single rule. We want gender neutral names only, please! We don’t define the duck’s gender. That’s for the duck to know, and us all to respect.)

We look forward to meeting our patron goal - and to naming this duck, with your help!

HOCKEY BOIS: A Beer League Romance

Nick Porter has always loved hockey. Ever since he can remember, it’s been his favorite thing in the world. It’s too bad he never learned to play, he’d tell himself, but it was too late to do it now. Adults don’t just magically learn to skate and join a hockey team. That’d be ridiculous.

Except maybe they do? On a whim, he decides to sign-up for an adult beginner’s class. He learns to skate, joins a team, and meets a really hot teammate… and it’s pretty much a disaster from there on out.

ebook available: Feb 26, 2021

Paperback available: NOW!! 🤯

Does it have hockey? Yes. Think Check Please levels of hockey.

Does it have romance? Also very yes. Think… well, pretty much every fic I’ve ever written levels of romance.

Tropes to expect: mutual pining, idiots to lovers, road trip, friends to lovers, one gets hurt and the other gets fight-y, only one bed, shipper/meddling friends, fans of rival teams style enemies to lovers, miscommunication (in the form of lack of communication)

Don’t know hockey and want a handy glossary? Or after you read Nick’s version, do you want to read Brady’s POV throughout the story?

GOOD NEWS! I have both available in my ko-fi shop :)

If you want the smut that’s unfortunate ko-fi won’t let me sell erotica.

CALLING: FANFICTION AUTHORS WHO DREAM OF PUBLISHING ORIGINAL FICTION!

Duck Prints Press LLC is thrilled to announce that the author application for our first anthology, Add Magic to Taste, are now open!

Times are tough, and we thought that what the world really needed were some light-hearted stories to make everyone smile. So, we picked themes that never fail to make us smile! The stories for this anthology will incorporate these themes:

  • Setting: Modern worlds with magic
  • Relationships: Queer love stories
  • Locale: Coffee shops, bakeries, tea shops, or the like
  • Trope: FLUFF!

This post is not a call for story submissions. Like a fandom zine, we’re asking prospective authors to submit writing samples. We’ll select authors based on these samples, and the chosen authors will have creative license to create a story of their choice provided it includes the four required story elements. You must write and post fanfiction to apply to this anthology, but all stories in Add Magic to Taste must be original!

If you want to be one of our authors, this is your moment - read more about the anthology and, if you’re interested, send in an application!

Author applications for Add Magic to Taste are open from March 1st to March 15th, 2021.

Happy New Year

Thank (insert your deity here) it’s over.

This has always been my New Year’s song for as long as I can remember. It has never been more true than it is for 2017.

I thought that a few others out there may be interested in this.

I hope 2018 is better for everyone than 2017 was.

As you can see, I’ve been posting this song every year for a few years now. Apparently 2017 was not that great either.

But compared to 2020? I can’t even compare. What we’ve all been through together, this huge shared trauma, not to mention literally the three decades of things/events/protests/tragedies that we’ve endured and come out on the other side of.

We’ve lost a lot in 2020. I’m not gonna make the same mistake as saying 2021 will be our year, did that last year and didn’t like how it turned out.

So here we are again.

This song has never rang more true in my life than tonight. I hope that you all enjoy it as much as I do.

Happy New Year.  Thank Fuck It’s Over.
