anyways this was my first security camera, a fairly common and standard panasonic from the late 80s. its a single tube black and white camera and one of panasonic's last vidicon tube security cameras before their basic models started using ccds. i found it at a recycling center years ago without the lens but the lens mount on a lot of old security cameras is pretty standardized and i have a few lenses that fit it. it outputs standard composite video over bnc like most cameras of the era which would be sent back to be recorded on a timelapse vcr
i picked up this fairly similar rca camera recently, it uses the same lens mount as the panasonic and like most other older security/cctv cameras it just plugs right into the wall and then outputs composite video through a bnc connector. rca developed some early ccd chips and did put them in cctv cameras but this camera is still tube based and has the afterimage of the ceiling lights from wherever it was originally installed burnt into it

this is my time-lapse vcr. its a pretty standard if not a little on the cheaper side of how these things went, a little later than most of my other cctv security system stuff goes.
the composite video signals are over bnc like the cameras and monitors and the audio is just normal rca jacks. there's a row of terminals that allow you to integrate the vcr more fully into your security system, you can wire in an alarm that will automatically make the vcr start recording if it gets tripped or wire it in to an alarm that will go off if someone attempts to mess with the vcr, and there's a way to chain multiple recorders together so when one reaches the end of the tape it triggers the next to start recording. the recorder can also be set to record at a wide variety of speeds. vhs tapes typically recorded for two hours at the highest quality speed and up to six hours at the slowest of the commonly available speeds, or up to eight or even ten hours on less common longer length tapes, but at the sacrifice of frame rate and video quality many timelapse vcrs allow you to record at much slower speeds and record days worth of footage to a standard length tape. here it is recording in the highest quality and completely vhs-compatible two hour mode
the longer recording times on my vcr range from a twelve hour mode running at half the speed of the slowest setting on most home recorders to a 48 hour mode that records about one frame a second without audio, with each slower speed in between lowering the frame rate and quality more. if you played any of these recordings in a normal vcr they would play back too fast
the recorder itself is able to record color but typically it would have been hooked up to record from a black and white camera like the ones above. i had this hitachi color saticon (their name for a vidicon tube, a type of tube that essentially works in the opposite way to a crt tv to function as an image sensor) camera intented to be used with a regular vcr in the pre-camcorder days hooked up just to show it could do color.
