Stop talking about what this means for re-election.Stop talking about what this means for re-election. Stop talking about what this means for re-election. Stop talking about what this means for re-election. Stop talking about what this means for re-election.

Everything is terrifying now. My whole life right now is a cycle of fear and dissociating from the fear.

And I know I’m not even grasping how bad this is. Because I know it is going to be bad. I am going to know people who die because of this. I know that. So many people are going to die and be sick and I do not have the capacity to wrap my head around it.

I have not left my house in days. And I am lucky to be with family, and with my pets, so I am forced to continue living my life. I have a schedule of things to do but I am doing them in fog or tears with no middle ground.

And we don’t have enough tests. And we aren’t doing enough tests because we can’t. And we don’t have enough masks. And we don’t have enough beds in hospitals. And we aren’t doing enough. Countries and communities with so much less are doing so much more. The most important person in my life is sick, and could not get tested because there were no tests available and he was sent home to rest and monitor his fever. And he won’t let me come see him because he doesn’t want me to get him sick. And the person in charge of our entire fucking country calls this the chinese virus and says that we have it under control and people believe him.

Some of this blood is on his hands and he does not care.

He doesn’t fucking care. He was given the power to lead our country and he is failing us. He has been failing us for four years and people are dying.

People have been saying this is a test of how he handles a crisis but this is not a fucking test. I don’t care what any of this says about anyone I just want everyone to do better. I do not want him to fail because I do not want more people to die.

I do not want him to be re-elected but I do not want it in exchange for people’s health and lives. It isn’t worth it.

We are failing. We are failing ourselves, and the planet, and all of the intelligent life that we know of. We are being failed by everyone who came before us who would rather be rich than worry about whether anyone will survive them. A continent is on fire, and we are in the middle a mass extinction and people are starving and dying and suffering and we aren’t doing enough. None of us are doing enough. Maybe some of us are. Maybe some people are doing every possible thing they can afford to do, and even some things they can’t, to slow this thing down and it still will not be enough. I make almost nothing to teach children how to be in nature and protect it. I talk to people constantly about what they can change, should change, need to change. I ride my bike, and drive a used hybrid, and empty as much of my bank account as I can into non profits who know better what to do with it than I do, and it is not enough.

The people who could do something, really fucking do something, quickly, are doing nothing and unless that changes no amount of recycling and turning down plastic straws is going to mean anything. This planet will burn up and take every living thing on it with it because there are people with billions of dollars in bank accounts that refuse to take off their blinders because they will be dead before it even matters.

This should not be my fucking job. This should not be my fucking life. I didn’t do this. I am not perfect but I didn’t do this. I have spent my adult life and half of my childhood trying to fix something broken by those who came before me. I am putting band-aids on bullet holes and broken limbs because band-aids are all I have, and the people who pulled the trigger are the same ones stockpiling the supplies we need just because they can. Those billionaires who have made their fortune by ripping up the planet and not looking back because they can hide in their mansions with air conditioning and pools that waste hundreds of gallons of clean water while people are being poisoned by water that could be fixed if they had the decency to care about someone else’s life for an iota of theirs. They are the ones who should be fixing this. And we should be forcing their fucking hand. They are not our friends and we shouldn’t treat them like it. They are the enemy and I am sick of pretending that just doing what I can is enough to reverse what they have left us with.

When the poor shall have nothing left to eat they shall eat the rich.

There is not enough to eat and there are people who do not care. We should not care about those people. Fuck them. Fuck their feelings, and fuck their lifestyles and fuck their refusal to give up a fraction of money that they will never spend and the food they will never eat because they are killing us.

I will not afford them the benefit of the doubt anymore. If they don’t see what is happening it is because they have chosen not to. If they refuse to see it we have to make them because if we don’t we are as good as dead.

There are people who could fix this and unless we force them they will do nothing.

I can’t take any criticism of female artists in indie/alternative/rock Seriously bc I’m always like…the 1975 are right there

not only did these fools get big off the Most incomprehensible music that didn’t even have the decency to, at the Very least, sound Good. they’re Still dropping terrible sounding music in 2018 with lyrics like “you make me hard but she makes me weak” like LSMLSJSKS??? Sir…you are a grown ass man. and somehow out of everyone They’re Not getting clowned to hell and back?? It doesnt add up

if y’all would oppress these famous indie dudes more we wouldn’t get shit like this

A guy just came to my house while I was home alone to ask if I was single why are men like this

Okay y'know what I’m gonna soapbox for a hot minute

When I was in high school, a man who I’d thought was the parent of a school friend followed me out to the grocery store parking lot greenhouse where I worked. It was dark, and late, and it was me, alone, in a chain link enclosure with one exit and a register full of cash. He called me up to the fence and asked if I wanted to get dinner, or go dancing. I was scared and shaking and told him no several times, and he only left when I falsely said I had a boyfriend. I was very aware that if he were to come over the fence, or just wait at the exit until I eventually had to leave, I could do nothing about it.

When my hair was very short, a hairdresser sent me to the barber’s side of the store so they could get the back of my head with clippers. The barber followed me out to my car to ask me out afterwards. I was very aware that we were the only people in the parking lot when it happened, and that the lot itself was tucked behind the building with no clear visibility to the road.

Today, a man I’ve met once made it very clear he knows where I live, and used that knowledge to express a romantic interest. If he ever decides that he’s unhappy with how I responded, he knows where I live. He knows what my car looks like. It is impossibly easy for him to determine when I’m home alone, and now I have to live with that knowledge.

Every woman I know has at least one story like this. My roommate had to be escorted to her car every night when she was a waitress, in case some man was waiting for her or a coworker’s shift to end.

If the person you want to ask out cannot physically run away from you when you are asking, YOU CANNOT ASK THEM OUT. You cannot ask someone out if they are at work. You cannot ask someone out if you’ve followed them to a remote/unoccupied/enclosed area. You cannot GO TO SOMEONE’S HOME UNINVITED to ask them out. You are not being romantic. You are not “taking initiative”. You are terrifying the person you want to woo. If they say yes, it is not because they want to, it is because they are terrified of what might happen if they say no.

I’m so tired of being terrified by men who think they’re being romantic.

“Every woman” you say. Do you personally know every woman in the world? Don’t presume to speak for others, and don’t make this a gendered issue either.

Actually every woman in the world is in one big group chat and they’re all telling you to fuck off

Her: don’t terrify women

Him: maybe some women?

Her: I’m a woman, and this is what women experience.

Him: But are you sure?

I’M ABOUT TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER, BOOK NERDS

Do you like books!?

OF COURSE YOU DO

Do you like reading books?

DUUUUUH!

Do you collect books and let them sit on your shelf!?

WHAT IS THIS!? AMATEUR hOUR? OF FUCKING COURSE!

Do you spend WAAAAAAY too much money on books even though they’re totally worth it but holy fucking shit fifteen dollars is the median and why is the world so effortlessly cruel?

Who’s got two thumbs and an empty wallet! Yes yes and yes!

WELL HAVE I GOT A SOLUTION FOR YOU

Thriftbooks is an amazing online site that sells used books! These books are, for the most part, in great condition. I’ve used this website for everything from textbooks to fiction to everything else in between! It has a wide selection with an even wider selection of options per book!

You want softcover? They’ve got it! Hardcover? Of course! Audio? Why not!

Hell! They even sell the books in other languages!

You might say to me, humanity, why are you telling us this? We already have barnes and noble!

Because, my poor, naive friend, thriftbooks sells the majority of it’s books for under four dollars.

That’s right. You heard me. Under. Four. Dollars.

And right now, they’re having a huge deal!

2 books for $7

3 books for $10

4 books for $12

But wait! There’s more!

If you leave a book in your cart for long enough, chances are you’ll be alerted when a seller nearby, for a cheaper price, has the same book! You’ll get it cheaper and faster, with less waste of paper and time!

And prices change! That book that would have cost you $3.79 one day might be $3.45 the next, and man oh man isn’t that the best thing to see when you check up on your cart.

So what are you waiting for, book lovers! Go! Go shop!

Go and rule the world!

Be the book lovers I know you can be!

DID I MENTION THAT THERE’S FREE SHIPPING OVER 10 DOLLARS

DID I MENTION THAT THERE’S ALSO A COUPON CODE YOU CAN USE FOR A LIMITED TIME

type in the word “welcome” when you get to checkout and you’ll get 15% off!

DID I ALSO MENTION THAT THERE ARE READING REWARDS

AND THAT EVER $50 YOU SPEND THEY GIVE YOU $5 BACK.

guys

five dollars

on this site

is a book

that is the cost of an entire book

you’re literally getting a free book

I NEED Y’ALL TO SEE THIS SIDE BY SIDE THOUGH

So to prove my very real point, I went to Barnes and Noble and picked out some of my favorites books that I already have on my shelves

(also, fyi, y’all should read these they’re bangin)

AND BECAUSE THE SHIPPING IS SO INSANE, IT WAS MEAN TO COME OUT TO $47.85 (and that’s at an online price, which discounts by a few dollars)

But with shipping, handling, and the extreme cost of books, my total came to this:

Image

$72.30

Okay. Then I went onto thriftbooks and chose the same books in the same formats (hardcover, softcover, etc.)

Keep in mind that not all books are under $4 due to size, availability, how new they are to the world yada yadayada

But this was the final shopping cart.

Look.

Look at those lovely books.

My final check out price?

Image

$21.86

AND THAT DOESN’T INCLUDE ANY OF THE AMAZING DISCOUNTS, DEALS, AND/OR PROMO CODES.

If you do the math, I saved $50.44.

And even if Barnes and Noble had given me that free shipping, I still would have saved $25.99. Do you know what that could buy you? That could buy you four more books on thriftbooks!

Thriftbooks fucking saved my broke college ass. And I’d encourage you all to use it if you can. Shipping may take 4-14 days, but I swear to god it’s worth every dollar that I would have burned

THIS IS IN NO WAY AN ENCOURAGEMENT TO STOP SHOPPING AT BOOKSTORES. PLEASE DON’T. LOCAL BOOKSTORES ARE IMPORTANT AND VITAL AND SHOULD BE SUPPORTED!

I’m mostly making jabs at the big name companies, and honestly, my broke bookworm ass needs a break.

NOW YOU MAY ASK ME

HOW

HOW CAN IT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!?

It can’t. There’s no way!

WELL YES IT FUCKING CAN, BOOK NERDS!

Did you ever think to yourself; I love to read. But I sure wish there was a way to read my own books while I multi-task by helping the environment, the economy, and the seemingly never-ending and growing gap between low-income schools and libraries and their availability to reading material all at the same time…

Well, there is.

It’s called shopping at Thriftbooks

And what’s more:

Boom.

Right there.

This place is fucking amazing as hell and you should use it as often as you possibly can.

Save the environment. Keep your mind running. Shop Thriftbooks.

hey gyns let me plug a book for a second. its a childhood favorite of mine, but its also one of the best fairy tale books for little girls, imho. its called ‘the serpent slayer: and other stories of strong women, and its a collection of fairy tales from around the world whose main characters are women. some of my favorite stories from it include:

neesowa and the chenoo - when an injured chenoo (an evil, cannibalistic monster) stumbles upon neesowa’s camp, she throws the monster off balance by treating him with kindness and sharing her home with him as he recovers, which pays off when another chenoo attacks her camp.

grandmother skull - a young woman, neruvana, marries a man who kills her entire family and abandons her. thankfully, the skull of her grandmother comes to life to teach her how to survive and to help her get revenge.

beebyeebyee and the water god - a young woman, beebyeebyee, falls in love with a water god who is slain by the envious people of her village. she gets revenge.

three whiskers from a lions chin - maria wants to help her husband, who returned from war a changed man, and the local bruja sends her off to get three whiskers from a lions chin, apparently a key ingredient in a magic spell that will bring her husband back to himself. when she brings the whiskers back to the bruja, the woman explains that there is no magic spell, but that with time, and the same patience she used to get the whiskers, she can help her husband recover.

the old woman and the devil - a brilliant old woman faces off with the devil in a bet to convince him to leave her spot in the shade. she outwits him, and undoes the harm he did as well.

duffy the lady - a version of rumplestiltskin where a housekeeper who cant knit or spin accepts a deal with a devil who will do the tasks for her for three years, if she will marry him at the end of the three years if she cannot guess his name. spoiler alert: she can.

sister lace - a creation myth about the stars, when the emperor hears of sister lace’s incredible lace-making abilities, he has her brought to the palace and ordered to marry him. when she refuses, he has her imprisoned unless she can spin him a live rooster. her skill and blood bring the bird to life, but she remains imprisoned, until, eventually, she finds her way out.

a marriage of two masters - a very intelligent young woman who speaks only in riddles meets a man who sees the world the same way, and as they decipher one anothers riddles, they fall in love.

clever marcella - marcella, a genius, fascinates the prince, and they agree to marry, provided she not interfere with his rule. when she feels compelled to challenge a ridiculous ruling he made on a case, he orders her to take whatever she likes from the palace and then leave. she solves the problem as anyone in love would, compels the prince to see the error of his ways, and becomes the kingdoms chief justice.

the rebel princess - to escape an unwanted arranged marriage, judith and her ladies-in-waiting take to the open sea. when they come across a ship of pirates who decide they will each marry one of the women, the crew steal their clothes, their treasure, and their lives. by the end of the story, judith has been crowned king in place of an heir-less king who drowned.

its just a really, really good book, with a portrayal of women that most fairy tales dont have. theyre kind and wise mentors and teachers, not wicked stepmothers and ugly hags, and an undeveloped marriage to a man isnt their be-all and end-all. i really encourage you to get a copy for any little girls in your life, especially who enjoy fairy tales.
