To understand what's going on here, know these things:
It's absurd and horrifying at the same time.
This is neither absurd nor horrifying, and two statements here are false (4 and 6).
1.8m of the 3m page requests were to robots.txt. If they weren't respecting robots.txt, then the site admin would see many, many more overall requests, and a significantly lower fraction of them would be to robots.txt.
The email explicitly says they have several billion websites, not just pages. In this case, it looks like they're all on different subdomains. There isn't a standard way to have robots.txt apply to all subdomains, which is why the person said robots.txt isn't a good solution.
Everyone doing LLM training does not just dump all the data directly into the training pipeline. Data processing happens before that step, but first they need to collect data to even process; that's what the crawler is. Part of the data processing step, after the crawling step, involves deduplication and quality filtering. It's misleading to say this is data they're training on; this is data going into the pool of stuff that might be trained on. That raw crawl has untold billions of pages no doubt filled with higher and lower quality garbage that will get filtered out before training.
The solution they're looking for is just to contact someone to have them blacklist either the whole domain or the IP address, since it's apparently all running from the same IP. With large crawlers, shit like this happens all the time—they even mention the same thing happened with Amazon.
This honestly isn't very exciting.
You can literally go to the relevant robots.txt file and examine it, all lines are commented out aside from the ones that tell *all* bots to not go to the /archive subsection of the site, which is presumably there to test if the bots are listening to instructions. Everything else is *allowed*.
OpenAI's web crawler downloads the robots.txt file, and handles it *correctly*.
The failure on OpenAI's side is by not having limits on how deep to go.
TL;DR: OpenAI's spider is not ignoring the sign that tells it to not go there, it reads it, correctly understands that it can go there, goes there and enters a web so complicated it gets lost and is unable to leave.

IMPORTANT REMINDER TO MY EUROPEAN FOLLOWERS AND OTHER TUMBLR DENIZENS FROM AN AMERICAN DESERT-DWELLER:
Climate change is a bitch and summer is coming. If you don’t already have an air conditioner and/or fans, NOW is the time to get them.
THINGS YOU SHOULD BE SHOPPING FOR NOW:
—clothes made of cotton or linen
—air conditioner
—fans
—frozen meals that can be cooked in the microwave
—potable bottled water; you want five days’ worth per person and pet in your household
—bottled fruit juices; it does not matter if these are sugar-added because you’ll want the electrolytes
—electrolyte drinks
—electrolyte pills (you can get these online, I get mine from Amazon)
—popsicle molds to use with fruit and juice
—ice cube trays
—nonperishable salty snacks like peanuts
—one charger brick per adult in case of rolling blackouts or power outages; charge these at the beginning of May, and drain them via use once a month if they’re not needed
YOUR TO-DO LIST:
—check your home’s HVAC system if you didn’t do it at the beginning of winter. Make sure all the filters are clean and replace them if needed
—check the seals on your sinks and bathtub in case you have to run water to handle shortages
—make and freeze meals you can cook in the microwave or simply defrost. Remember to select light summer fare, not hearty winter soups and gravies
—purchase and freeze lunch meats and cheeses you can defrost and use this summer for sandwiches when it’s hot
—assemble your check-in list: elderly, pregnant, disabled, and immunocompromised friends and relatives who may struggle to get things they need when the heat wave hits. Have this list posted and ready to go through daily once the heat gets high. DON’T JUST ASSUME YOU WILL REMEMBER. WRITE IT ALL DOWN.
—create a list of emergency contacts in case of fire, heat stroke, and other heat-related emergencies. This should include your local version of 911 (I think in most of Europe it’s 112, but don’t rely on me as an American, LOOK IT UP NOW before you need it), your doctor’s phone number, and two emergency contacts. Keep it in a place where it can be easily found if someone needs to make these calls on your behalf.
—ask your doctor for an additional prescription for any medications you take, and fill it now. Extreme heat can cause disruptions in the supply chain. Make sure you cycle these meds; that’s to say, always use your oldest bottle first so you don’t end up with expired meds in an emergency.
—stock your first-aid kit. If you don’t have one, now is a good time to make one.
—if you own a car, get your yearly maintenance done now. You don’t want to be dealing with an inoperable vehicle if you need to evacuate.
Staying safe this summer starts now. Get your prep done.
Someone in the notes tagged this as yet another sign of Tumblr’s aging user base, and while this is kind of true (I’m 35), if you are a European minor I ENCOURAGE YOU STRONGLY TO SHARE THIS POST WITH YOUR ADULTS. If these are not things you can do yourself—I don’t expect a 15-year-old to know how to check the HVAC filters, for example, although if you’re old enough to be on Tumblr you’re definitely old enough to learn how to do it—enlist those around you who can.
This isn’t just a post for the adults. It’s for teenagers to use to educate their families and those around them, as well. I want ALL of you safe in July. (And yes, as we get a bit closer to the summer months I’ll make another post detailing how to utilize the items I’ve told you to purchase now.)
For the last, oh, seven years or so? As soon as the heat hits in June or July, stores DID NOT have ANY fans, coolers, mobile AC units, NOTHING. Shelves completely empty, online stores sold out, "delivery in two to three months".
(I live in Germany; a lot of houses do not have built-in AC)
If you suffered from the heat last year, and still live in the same place, BUY ONE NOW. As soon as you can.
Also, see if you can fit your windows (if they aren't already) with some form of shades - outside is best but inside works too! Shutter them as soon as the sun hits them, in summer. If your windows have shutters and you haven't used them before, do it this time around. It makes a huge difference!
Also, air out your apartment/house as much as you can in the early morning when the outside air has cooled off during the night. Open all the windows and doors, aid airflow with fans.
If you consider moving, or have to move, take future summer heat into account! Apartments that have windows only in one direction make it difficult to air out, because the air would basically have to move in a half-circle to get out again. Apartments with built-in shades, AC, other heat-proofing or -dissembling measures are good. Apartments facing only south and/or west will be hot. Top floor apartments will be hot. Attic apartments will be super duper hot. Basement/partial basement apartments will be cool, north/east facing will be cool - both will have less natural light, though. Altbau (turn of the century) buildings tend to be a bit cooler - used to be they were a fucker to heat in winter, now bodes well for summers. If you can, pay attention to these details when choosing a new apartment.

It won’t cool a whole room, but it’ll help you stay cool on hot days.
If you don’t have a/c or forced air or central air or whatever your particular region calls home cooling systems and you feel yourself loosing the ability to cope —TAKE 3-5 10 minute cold showers per day.
With or without clothes on tbh.
Evaporative cooling is amazing. I had my air conditioning go out in the dead of summer two years ago during a 100+ degree heat wave. And I couldn’t get anyone to come fix it for over a week. Those showers saved mine and my dog’s life. You get a nice refreshing hit of coolness and you continue to cool off as the water evaporates from you. Then you cool even more once you remove your clothes. During my heat wave, my dog would walk into the shower with me to cool off. It helped him regulate and prevented an emergency.
Repeat as needed.
Also, I turned off all my lights and kept electronic use to a minimum.
Make use of public spaces. Get out of the house and go to a mall or a similar location where cooling is standard. DO NOT DO THIS IF IT WOULD MEAN LEAVING YOUR PET ALONE IN AN INHOSPITABLY HOT HOME. If you’re having trouble coping so is your pet. If you don’t have a way to manage at home, your pet likely does not either.
Keep 3-5 re-freezable ice packs in your freezer at all times. When one loses its cooling affect, immediately put it back in the freezer and take out another.
Contact friends outside your area/neighborhood and let them know you might need to escape your climate (with your pet, if applicable). If they have a community pool at their apartment you can use for a few hours or a spare room for a few nights while you wait out a heat wave or need to get A/C fixed, let them know you’d appreciate if they allowed you to consider them an emergency escape plan. Offer the same courtesy to them.
Keep ice cream or nondairy frozen desert in your freezer. Keep frozen grapes in your freezer. Genuinely think of as many foods and refreshments that you can enjoy in their freezer stored/frozen state and stock up. Cool yourself inside and out.
Finally, don’t read Albert Camus’ The Stranger. We all get aggressive in extreme heat. Heat does not justify violence. (This is a joke. But it is actually a bad idea to read that book when ur too warm.)
