Half-Life: Decay is the best game in the series, and I am fully prepared to die on this hill.

if you optimize any engineering problem enough by removing what is unneeded and streamlining what is needed, you end up with a variation of a train

if you optimize any biological creature for its environment by removing what is wasteful and fortifying what helps it survive and reproduce, you end up with a variation of crab

if you optimize any video game by removing anything all the bad parts and focusing on good design for the important bits, you end up with a variation of half life

after inputting some complex algorithms into my super computer i’ve determined what tumblr will look like in the year 2020

i love how this comes back after every shitty update staff makes

"Think of the two major possibilities here: Either the studios owe untold millions to their talents and paying it out will decimate their stock prices, or they owe so little because there really is no money in streaming and the bubble of their entire 21st century business model will burst in spectacular fashion. And make no mistake: this is a bubble. This is the inevitable climax of a stockholder-driven hunger for infinite growth, despite the fact that, by design, such a thing cannot and should not exist. The infection of Wall Street has overwhelmed the entertainment industry beyond repair, leading to cultural vandals like David Zaslav to be appointed with the callous duty of strip-mining decades’ of artistic beauty for pennies of tax write-offs. The past and future are frivolous in comparison to the short-term demands that the line keep going up."

I love Quiplash because it's a very funny game, but I hate Quiplash because my answer will be the most well thought-out and eloquent punchline ever put to text and go up against "he hoo penis eheh" and the latter will always win because everyone I play with has no fucking taste or class.

Fictional Weapon War Preliminary Round #19

Only one of these will make it into the bracket so choose your favorite!

Portal Gun sweep (It's totally a weapon; you kick GLaDOS' ass with it.)

You don't, tho. You never harm her with it.

It's a tool.

A gun is not a weapon, it's a tool. You just use it to transport bullets. It's basically a vehicle.

No, it's a weapon, which is a type of tool. Not all tools are weapons, but al weapons are tools. If I kill someone with a phone that doesn't make all phones a weapon.

The Portal Gun fits this definition quite well, considering you are required to kill turrets with it in order to make it through either game's campaign.

You kill the turrets with boxes though

You drop the boxes onto them with the Portal Gun. Even disregarding that, you can just place a portal under a turret to send it flying out the other one onto the ground, deactivating.

That's gravity, not the gun.

If I launch a piano out of a trebuchet and it lands on and destroys your house, are you going to tell me the trebuchet had nothing to do with it?

A trebuchet is a weapon. It gave the piano momentum.

Well there you go.

Portal Gun doesn't provide momentum

Yes it does. They only get the downward momentum from gravity because the portal opens up in the floor.

The momentum was already in them from gravity.

That's not even remotely how physics works. The Portal Gun makes them fall by manipulating the space around them via a portal so there's no longer a floor beneath them, causing their potential energy of position to turn into kinetic energy, in a similar manner to say a trebuchet turning the potential energy of position of its counterweight into kinetic energy that passes through the lever of its arm and hurls its projectile.

But in this case the turret/box has all the energy the whole time and the portal gun isn't contributing any.

Firstly, the Portal Gun is powered by a fucking black hole (somehow), so I'm quite sure that it's putting out some energy in the creation of portals (in fact, though we don't know how the Portal Gun actually works in-lore, were it to be created while following the laws of physics, it'd have to provide the energy to move the box over those distances in order for the portals to function), and secondly in what way is that conducive to the Portal Gun not being used expressly and purposefully to harm the turret?

Woah, fish

Isn't it so smooth

even if you care deeply about some specific kind of suffering you do not have to fill your life with as many upsetting stories of that type of suffering as possible. that is just signing up to have a bad time.

does you absorbing this information help you benefit a cause? and even if you are benefitting a cause, are you doing something productive with more of these stories or are they just making you feel bad? are you taking more effective action or just getting overwhelmed with sadness? is surrounding yourself with stuff that upsets you helping you more than it hurts you?

i definitely think minecraft won't be the game for everyone in the end and that's just how things are no problem but i do think *some* people who don't get the hype of it just need to play with their friends and build a house with them. its also for doing things like this.
